Step Clearance Seals: An Analysis to Demonstrate Their Unique Performance

Hydraulic turbines and centrifugal pumps at times show low frequency vibrations when installed with upstream step (band) clearance seals with a narrow clearance facing the incoming external flow. When implementing a downstream step clearance seal, one with the narrow clearance located at the seal exit, the same machine does not show the same problem. This paper presents both theoretical and experimental analysis on the leakage and dynamic force coefficients of both upstream and downstream step clearance seals. The predicted and measured results show that an upstream step clearance seal produces a significant negative direct stiffness (K < 0) that could cause a static instability. On the other hand, a downstream step clearance seal generates a positive direct stiffness (K > 0) that is beneficial to a rotor system. Both the upstream and downstream step clearance seals show positive direct damping and virtual mass coefficients.

Tests are reported for a smooth seal with radial clearances 127 μm, 254 μm, 381 μm (1×, 2×, and 3×); length 45.72 mm, diameter 101.6 mm. An insert induced upstream preswirl. Swirl brakes (SBs), comprising 36 square cuts with axial depth 5.08 mm, radial height 6.35 mm, and circumferential width 6.35 mm each. Static and rotordynamic data were produced at ω = 2, 4, 6, 8 krpm, ΔP = 2.07, 4.14, 6.21, 8.27 bar, and eccentricity ratios ε0 = e0/Cr = 0.00, 0.27, 0.53, and 0.80. ISO VG 46 oil at a range of 46–49 °C was used, netting laminar flow (total Re ≤ 650). Dynamic measurements included components of the following vectors: (a) stator–rotor relative displacements, (b) acceleration, and (c) applied dynamic force in a stationary coordinate system. SBs were effective at the 3× clearance only. With the 3× seal, the cross-coupled stiffness coefficients have the same sign (not destabilizing). However, the seal has a negative direct stiffness K that could potentially “suck” the rotor into contact with the stator wall, along with dropping the pump rotor's natural frequency, further reducing its dynamic stability. Measurements were compared to predictions from a code by Zirkelback and San Andrés. Most predictions agree well with test data. Notable exceptions are the direct and cross-coupled stiffness coefficients for the 3× clearance. Predictions showed positive direct stiffness and opposite signs for the cross-coupled stiffness coefficients.

The purpose of the proposed article is to establish the causes of oscillations of drilling tool and the basic laws of the distribution of the total energy of the process of changing the axial dynamic force over frequencies of spectrum. Variable factors during experiments on the classical plan were the rigidity of drilling tool and the hardness of the rock. According to the results of research, the main power of the process of change of axial dynamic force during drilling of three roller cone bits is in the frequency range 0-32 Hz in which three harmonic frequency components are allocated which correspond to the theoretical values of low-frequency and gear oscillations of the chisel and proper oscillations of the bit. The experimental values of frequencies of harmonic components of energy and normalized spectrum as well as the magnitude of the dispersion of the axial dynamic force and its normalized values at these frequencies are presented. It has been found that with decreasing rigidity of the drilling tool maximum energy of axial dynamic force moves from the low-frequency oscillation region to the tooth oscillation area, intensifying the process of rock destruction and, at the same time, protecting the tool from the harmful effects of the vibrations of the bit. Reducing the rigidity of the drilling tool protects the bit from the harmful effects of the vibrations generated by the stand. The energy reductions in these fluctuations range from 47 to 77%.

AbstractAn ~1.9-kb region encompassing the CHI gene, which encodes chalcone isomerase, was sequenced in 24 worldwide ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. and in 1 ecotype of A. lyrata ssp. petraea. There was no evidence for dimorphism at the CHI region. A minimum of three recombination events was inferred in the history of the sampled ecotypes of the highly selfing A. thaliana. The estimated nucleotide diversity (θTOTAL = 0.004, θSIL = 0.005) was on the lower part of the range of the corresponding estimates for other gene regions. The skewness of the frequency spectrum toward an excess of low-frequency polymorphisms, together with the bell-shaped distribution of pairwise nucleotide differences at CHI, suggests that A. thaliana has recently experienced a rapid population growth. Although this pattern could also be explained by a recent selective sweep at the studied region, results from the other studied loci and from an AFLP survey seem to support the expansion hypothesis. Comparison of silent polymorphism and divergence at the CHI region and at the Adh1 and ChiA revealed in some cases a significant deviation of the direct relationship predicted by the neutral theory, which would be compatible with balancing selection acting at the latter regions.

Abstract Seals in multiple phase rotordynamic pumps must operate without compromising system efficiency and stability. Both field operation and laboratory experiments show that seals supplied with a gas in liquid mixture (bubbly flow) can produce rotordynamic instability and excessive rotor vibrations. This paper advances a nonhomogeneous bulk flow model (NHBFM) for the prediction of the leakage and dynamic force coefficients of uniform clearance annular seals lubricated with gas in liquid mixtures. Compared to a homogeneous BFM (HBFM), the current model includes diffusion coefficients in the momentum transport equations and a field equation for the transport of the gas volume fraction (GVF). Published experimental leakage and dynamic force coefficients for two seals supplied with an air in oil mixture whose GVF varies from 0 (pure liquid) to 20% serve to validate the novel model as well as to benchmark it against predictions from a HBFM. The first seal withstands a large pressure drop (~ 38 bar) and the shaft speed equals 7.5 krpm. The second seal restricts a small pressure drop (1.6 bar) as the shaft turns at 3.5 krpm. The first seal is typical as a balance piston whereas the second seal is found as a neck-ring seal in an impeller. For the high pressure seal and inlet GVF = 0.1, the flow is mostly homogeneous as the maximum diffusion velocity at the seal exit plane is just ~0.1% of the liquid flow velocity. Thus, both the NHBFM and HBFM predict similar flow fields, leakage (mass flow rate) and drag torque. The difference between the predicted leakage and measurement is less than 5%. The NHBFM direct stiffness (K) agrees with the experimental results and reduces faster with inlet GVF than the HBFM K. Both direct damping (C) and cross-coupled stiffness (k) increase with inlet GVF &lt; 0.1.Compared to the test data, the two models generally under predict C and k by ~ 25%. Both models deliver a whirl frequency ratio (fw) ~ 0.3 for the pure liquid seal, hence closely matching the test data. fw raises to ~0.35 as the GVF approaches 0.1. For the low pressure seal the flow is laminar, the experimental results and both NHBFM and HBFM predict a null direct stiffness (K). At an inlet GVF = 0.2, the NHBFM predicted added mass (M) is ~30 % below the experimental result while the HBFM predicts a null M. C and k predicted by both models are within the uncertainty of the experimental results. For operation with either a pure liquid or a mixture (GVF = 0.2), both models deliver fw = 0.5 and equal to the experimental finding. The comparisons of predictions against experimental data demonstrate the NHBFM offers a marked improvement, in particular for the direct stiffness (K). The predictions reveal the fluid flow maintains the homogeneous character known at the inlet condition.

Purpose Although the literature has established the effect of online reviews on customer purchase intentions, the influence of psychological factors on online ratings is overlooked. This paper aims to examine these factors under the perspective of construal level theory (CLT). Design/methodology/approach Using review data from TripAdvisor and Booking.com, the authors study three dimensions of psychological distances (temporal, spatial and social) and their direct and interaction effects on review valence, using regression analysis. The authors examine the effect of these distances on the information content of online reviews using a novel bag-of-words model to assess its concreteness. Findings Temporal distance and spatial distance have positive direct effects on review valence. Social distance, on the other hand, has a negative direct effect. However, its interaction with the other two distances has a positive effect, suggesting that consumers tend to “zoom-out” to less concrete things in their ratings. Practical implications The findings provide implications for the interpretation of review ratings by the service providers and their information content. Originality/value This study extends the CLT and electronic word-of-mouth literature by jointly exploring the effect of all three psychological distances that are applicable in post-purchase evaluations. Methodologically, it provides a novel application of the bag-of-words model in evaluating the concreteness of online reviews.

In this work we report the thermal behaviour of the amide I′ band of carbonmonoxy and deoxy hemoglobin in 65% v/v glycerolD8/D2O solutions and in the temperature interval 10–295 K. Following recent suggestions in the literature, we analyze the amide I′ band in terms of two components, one at about 1630 cm−1and the other at about 1650 cm−1, that are assigned to solvent‒exposed and buried α‒helical regions, respectively.For deoxy hemoglobin (in T quaternary structure) both components are narrower with respect to carbonmonoxy hemoglobin (in R quaternary structure), while the peak frequency blue shift observed, upon increasing temperature, for the component at about 1630 cm−1is smaller. The reported data provide evidence of the dependence of hemoglobin dynamic properties upon the protein quaternary structure and suggest a more compact α‒helical structure of hemoglobin in T conformation, with reduced population of low‒frequency modes involving the solvent and protein.

ABSTRACTAphanizomenon ovalisporumis the only confirmed cylindrospermopsin producer identified in the United States to date. On the other hand,Cylindrospermopsis raciborskiiis a prominent feature of many lakes in Florida and other regions of the United States. To see the variation in cylindrospermopsincyrBgene adenylation domain sequences and possibly discover new cylindrospermopsin producers, we collected water samples for a 3-year period from 17 different systems in Florida. Positive amplicons were cloned and sequenced, revealing that approximately 92% of sequences wereA. ovalisporum-like (>99% identity). Interestingly, 6% of sequences were very similar (>99% identity) tocyrBsequences ofC. raciborskiifrom Australia and ofAphanizomenonsp. from Germany. Neutrality tests suggest thatA. ovalisporum-likecyrBadenylation domain sequences are under purifying selection, with abundant low-frequency polymorphisms within the population. On the other hand, when compared between species by codon-based methods, amino acids of CyrB also seem to be under purifying selection, in accordance with the one proposed amino acid thought to be activated by the CyrB adenylation domain.

Research into cognitive aspects of survey response has indicated unfamiliar terms as one of the psycholinguistic determinants of question comprehensibility problems. In this paper the estimates of wording familiarity based on text corpora for the English and Slovenian languages were used to detect potentially incomprehensible wordings in two web survey questionnaires for international exchange students at the University of Ljubljana, one for incoming (English) and the other for outgoing students (Slovenian). Two versions of the questionnaire were developed for each language, one with low-frequency (complex) and the other with high-frequency (improved) wordings, and compared in a split-ballot experiment. The results show a lower drop-out rate and a decreased subjective perception of difficulty for the improved language versions.

In this paper comparative investigations of microstructure and dielectric properties of BaTiO3 ceramics doped with 1.0 wt% of Nb2O5, MnCO3 and CaZrO3 have been done. BaTiO3 samples were prepared using conventional method of solid state sintering at 13000C for two hours. Two distinguish micro structural regions can be observed in sample doped with Nb2O5. The first one, with a very small grained microstructure and the other one, with a rod like grains. In MnCO3 and CaZrO3 doped ceramics the uniform microstructure is formed with average grain size about 0.5- 2?m and 3-5?m respectively. The highest value of dielectric permittivity at room temperature and the greatest change of permittivity in function of temperature were observed in MnCO3/BaTiO3. In all investigated samples dielectric constant after initially large value at low frequency attains a constant value at f = 6kHz. A dissipation factor is independent of frequency greater than 10 kHz and, depending of systems, lies in the range from 0.035 to 0.25. At temperatures above Curie temperatures, the permittivity of all investigated samples follows a Curie- Weiss law. A slight shift of Curie temperature to the lower temperatures, in respect of Curie temperature for undoped BaTiO3, was observed in all investigated samples.

The medial frontal cortex (MFC), especially its ventral part, has long been of great interest with respect to the pathology of mood disorders. A number of human brain imaging studies have demonstrated the abnormalities of this brain region in patients with mood disorders, however, whether it is critically involved in the pathogenesis of such disorders remains to be fully elucidated. In this study, we conducted a causal study to investigate how the suppression of neural activity in the ventral region of the MFC (vMFC) affects the behavioral and physiological states of monkeys by using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). By using low-frequency rTMS (LF-rTMS) as an inhibitory intervention, we found that LF-rTMS targeting the vMFC induced a depression-like state in monkeys, which was characterized by a reduced spontaneous behavioral activity, increased plasma cortisol level, impaired sociability, and decreased motivation level. On the other hand, no such significant changes in behavioral and physiological states were observed when targeting the other MFC regions, dorsal or posterior. We further found that the administration of an antidepressant agent, ketamine, ameliorated the abnormal behavioral and physiological states induced by the LF-rTMS intervention. These findings indicate the causal involvement of the vMFC in the regulation of mood and affect and the validity of the LF-rTMS-induced dysfunction of the vMFC as a nonhuman primate model of the depression-like state.
