An Investigation of the Structural Integrity of a Reactor Pressure Vessel Using Three-Dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics and Finite Element Method Based Probabilistic Pressurized Thermal Shock Analysis for Optimizing Maintenance Strategy

The structural integrity of a reactor pressure vessel (RPV) is important for the safety of a nuclear power plant. When the emergency core cooling system (ECCS) is operated and the coolant water is injected into the RPV due to a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA), the pressurized thermal shock (PTS) loading takes place. With the neutron irradiation, PTS loading may lead an RPV to fracture. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the performance of RPV during PTS loading to keep the reactor safety. In the present study, optimization of RPV maintenance is considered, where two different attempts are made to investigate the RPV integrity during PTS loading by employing the deterministic and probabilistic methodologies. For the deterministic integrity evaluation, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (3D-CFD) and finite element method (FEM) simulations are performed, and stress intensity factors (SIFs) are obtained as a function of crack position inside the RPV. As to the probabilistic integrity evaluation, on the other hand, a practically more useful spatial distribution of SIF on the RPV is calculated. By comparing the distribution thus obtained with the fracture toughness included as a part of the master curve, the dependence of conditional failure probabilities on the position inside the RPV is obtained. Using the spatial distribution of conditional failure probabilities in RPV, the priority of the inspection and maintenance is finally discussed.

In order to study the structural integrity of the reactor pressure vessel under pressurized thermal shock, both the cleavage and the ductile thermal shock fracture experiments using initially corner-cracked nozzle specimens made of Type A508 class 3 pressure vessel steel were performed. In both experiments, unstable fractures were realized, although the test conditions were very conservative compared to those of real plants. Finally, the three-dimensional and time-dependent fracture parameter obtained with the finite element method was successfully employed to discuss the fracture phenomenon.

A significant extensive Research & Development work is conducted by Electricite´ de France (EDF) related to the structural integrity re-assessment of the French 900 and 1300 MWe reactor pressure vessels in order to increase their lifetime. Within the framework of this programme, numerous developments have been implemented or are in progress related to the methodology to assess flaws during a pressurized thermal shock (PTS) event. The paper contains three aspects: a short description of the specific French approach for RPV PTS assessment, a presentation of recent improvements on thermalhydraulic, materials and mechanical aspects, and finally an overview of the present R&D programme on thermalhydraulic, materials and mechanical aspects. Regarding the last aspect on present R&D programme, several projects in progress will be shortly described. This overview includes the redefinition of some significant thermalhydraulic transients based on some new three-dimensional CFD computations (focused at the present time on small break LOCA transient), the assessment of vessel materials properties, and the improvement of the RPV PTS structural integrity assessment including several themes such as warm pre-stress (WPS), crack arrest, constraint effect ....

In computational fluid dynamics there have been many attempts to combine the advantages of having a fixed mesh, on which to carry out spatial calculations, with using particles moving according to the velocity field. These ideas in fact go back to particle-in-cell methods, proposed about 60 years ago. Of course, some procedure is needed to transfer field information between particles and mesh. There are many possible choices for this “assignment”, or “projection”. Several requirements may guide this choice. Two well-known ones are conservativity and stability, which apply to volume integrals of the fields. An additional one is here considered: preservation of information. This means that assignment from the particles onto the mesh and back should yield the same field values when the particles and the mesh coincide in position. The resulting method is termed “mass” assignment, due to its strong similarities with the finite element method. Several procedures are tested, including the well-known FLIP, on three scenarios: simple 1D convection, 2D convection of Zalesak’s disk, and a CFD simulation of the Taylor–Green periodic vortex sheet. Mass assignment is seen to be clearly superior to other methods.

The structural integrity assessment of a nuclear Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) during accidental conditions such as loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) is a major safety concern. Besides conventional deterministic calculations to justify as a nuclear operator the RPV integrity, Electricite´ de France (EDF) carries out probabilistic analyses. Probabilistic analyses become most interesting when some key variables, albeit conventionally taken at conservative values, can be modelled more accurately through statistical variability. In the context of low failure probabilities, this requires however a specific coupling effort between a specific probabilistic analysis method (e.g. Form-Sorm method) and the thermo-mechanical model to be reasonable in computing time. In this paper, the variability of a key variable — the mid-transient cooling temperature, tied to a climate-dependent tank — has been modelled, in some flaw configurations (axial sub-clad) for a French vessel. In a first step, a simplified analytical approach was carried out to assess its sensitivity upon the thermo-mechanical phenomena; hence, a direct coupling had to be implemented to allow a probabilistic calculation on the finite-element mechanical model, taking also into account a failure event properly defined through minimisation of the instantaneous failure margin during the transient. Comparison with the previous (indirectly-coupled) studies and the simplified analytical approach is drawn, demonstrating the interest of this new modelling effort to understand and order the sensitivity of the probability of crack initiation to the key variables. While being noticeable in the cases studied, sensitivity to the safety injection temperature variability proves to be less than the choice of the toughness model. Finally, regularity of the thermo-mechanical model is evidenced by the coupling exercise, suggesting that a modified response-surface based method could replace direct coupling for further investigation.
