Measurements of Periodic Reynolds Stress Oscillations in a Forced Turbulent Premixed Swirling Flame

This work is motivated by the thermoacoustic instability challenges associated with ultra-low emissions gas turbine (GT) combustors. It demonstrates the first use of high-speed dual-plane orthogonally-polarized stereoscopic-particle image velocimetry (PIV) and synchronized OH planar laser-induced fluorescence in a premixed swirling flame. We use this technique to explore the effects of combustion and longitudinal acoustic forcing on the time- and phase-averaged flow field—particularly focusing on the behavior of the Reynolds stress in the presence of harmonic forcing. We observe significant differences between ensemble-averaged and time-averaged Reynolds stress. This implies that the large-scale motions are nonergodic, due to coherent oscillations in Reynolds stress associated with the convection of periodic vortical structures. This result has important implications on hydrodynamic stability models and reduced-order computational fluid dynamics simulations, which do show the importance of turbulent transport on the problem, but do not capture these coherent oscillations in their models.

AbstractThe effect of hydrogen ($$\mathrm {H}_{\mathrm {2}}$$ H 2 ) enrichment on the flame-holding characteristics of two natural gas jet flames in crossflow is investigated here, experimentally. The flame and flowfield measurements are analyzed using simultaneously acquired high-speed (10 kHz) stereoscopic particle image velocimetry, planar laser-induced fluorescence of the hydroxyl radical, and OH* chemiluminescence. The flames, enriched with 20% and 40% $$\mathrm {H}_{\mathrm {2}}$$ H 2 , by volume, are studied at conditions typical of the mixing duct of a modern gas turbine engine; specifically in confinement, at 10 bars, and with a crossflow preheat of 530 K. Consistent with previous findings, the 40% $$\mathrm {H}_{\mathrm {2}}$$ H 2 flame was found to be stabilized on the windward and leeward side of the jet, while the 20% $$\mathrm {H}_{\mathrm {2}}$$ H 2 flame was stabilized only on the leeward side. Analysis of mean and instantaneous velocity fields showed no major differences in the trajectories and principal compressive strain fields of the two flames. The presence of the windward stabilized flame in the 40% $$\mathrm {H}_{\mathrm {2}}$$ H 2 case was, however, found to decrease the centerline velocity decay and greatly reduce or eliminate large scale vortices along the windward shear layer. The difference in the flame-holding here was attributed to the difference in the extinction strain rate from the addition of hydrogen, which would impact the local and global extinction of the flame along the high shear windward region of the flame.

Shear instabilities induced by the relaxation of laminar boundary layer at the free surface of a high speed liquid jet are investigated experimentally. Physical insights into these instabilities and the resulting capillary wave growth are gained by performing non-intrusive measurements of flow structure in the direct vicinity of the surface. The experimental results are a combination of surface visualization, planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF), particle image velocimetry (PIV), and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV). They suggest that 2D spanwise vortices in the shear layer play a major role in these instabilities by triggering 2D waves on the free surface as predicted by linear stability analysis. These vortices, however, are found to travel at a different speed than the capillary waves they initially created resulting in interference with the waves and wave growth. A new experimental facility was built; it consists of a 20.3 × 146.mm rectangular water wall jet with Reynolds number based on channel depth between 3.13 × 104 to 1.65 × 105 and 115. to 264. based on boundary layer momentum thickness.

What is the turbulent drag force experienced by an object moving in a rotating fluid? This open and fundamental question can be addressed by measuring the torque needed to drive an impeller at a constant angular velocity ${\it\omega}$ in a water tank mounted on a platform rotating at a rate ${\it\Omega}$. We report a dramatic reduction in drag as ${\it\Omega}$ increases, down to values as low as 12 % of the non-rotating drag. At small Rossby number $Ro={\it\omega}/{\it\Omega}$, the decrease in the drag coefficient $K$ follows the approximate scaling law $K\sim Ro$, which is predicted in the framework of nonlinear inertial-wave interactions and weak-turbulence theory. However, stereoscopic particle image velocimetry measurements indicate that this drag reduction instead originates from a weakening of the turbulence intensity in line with the two-dimensionalization of the large-scale flow.

Experiments were conducted in a two-stream planar mixing layer at convective Mach numbers,Mc, of 0.28, 0.42, 0.50, 0.62 and 0.79. Planar laser Mie scattering (PLMS) from a condensed alcohol fog and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) of nitric oxide were used for flow visualization in the side, plan and end views. The PLIF signals were also used to characterize the turbulent mixture fraction fluctuations.Visualizations using PLMS indicate a transition in the turbulent structure from quasi-two-dimensionality at low convective Mach number, to more random three-dimensionality for$M_c\geqslant 0.62$. A transition is also observed in the core and braid regions of the spanwise rollers as the convective Mach number increases from 0.28 to 0.62. A change in the entrainment mechanism with increasing compressibility is also indicated by signal intensity profiles and perspective views of the PLMS and PLIF images. These show that atMc= 0.28 the instantaneous mixture fraction field typically exhibits a gradient in the streamwise direction, but is more uniform in the cross-stream direction. AtMc= 0.62 and 0.79, however, the mixture fraction field is more streamwise uniform and with a gradient in the cross-stream direction. This change in the composition of the structures is indicative of different entrainment motions at the different compressibility conditions. The statistical results are consistent with the qualitative observations and suggest that compressibility acts to reduce the magnitude of the mixture fraction fluctuations, particularly on the high-speed edge of the layer.

Nanoparticle-based planar laser scattering (NPLS) experiments and large eddy simulation (LES) were launched to get the fine structure of the supersonic planar mixing layer with finite thickness in the present study. Different from the turbulent development of supersonic planar mixing layer with thin thickness, the development of supersonic planar mixing layer with finite thickness is rapidly. The large-scale structures of mixing layer that possess the characters of quick movement and slow changes transmit to downriver at invariable speed. The transverse results show that the mixing layer is strip of right and dim and possess 3D characteristics. Meanwhile the vortices roll up from two sides to the center. Results indicate that the higher the pressure of the high speed side is, the thicker the mixing layer is. The development of mixing layer is restrained when the pressure of lower speed side is higher. The momentum thickness goes higher with the increase of the clapboard thickness. Through increasing the temperature to change the compression can affect the development of the vortices. The present study can make a contribution to the mixing enhancement and provide initial data for the later investigations.

Abstract The development and verification of new turbulence models for Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equation-based numerical methods require reliable experimental data with a deep understanding of the underlying turbulence mechanisms. High accurate turbulence measurements are normally limited to simplified test cases under optimal experimental conditions. This work presents comprehensive three-dimensional data of turbulent flow quantities, comparing advanced constant temperature anemometry (CTA) and stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV) methods under realistic test conditions. The experiments are conducted downstream of a linear, low-pressure turbine cascade at engine relevant high-speed operating conditions. The special combination of high subsonic Mach and low Reynolds number results in a low density test environment, challenging for all applied measurement techniques. Detailed discussions about influences affecting the measured result for each specific measuring technique are given. The presented time mean fields as well as total turbulence data demonstrate with an average deviation of ΔTu<0.4% and ΔC/Cref<0.9% an extraordinary good agreement between the results from the triple sensor hot-wire probe and the 2D3C-PIV setup. Most differences between PIV and CTA can be explained by the finite probe size and individual geometry.

Experiments preformed in the JHU refractive index matched facility examine flow phenomena developing in the rotor passage of an axial compressor at the onset of stall. High-speed imaging of cavitation performed at low pressures qualitatively visualizes vortical structures. Stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV) measurements provide detailed snapshots and ensemble statistics of the flow in a series of meridional planes. At prestall condition, the tip leakage vortex (TLV) breaks up into widely distributed intermittent vortical structures shortly after rollup. The most prominent instability involves periodic formation of large-scale backflow vortices (BFVs) that extend diagonally upstream, from the suction side (SS) of one blade at midchord to the pressure side (PS) near the leading edge of the next blade. The 3D vorticity distributions obtained from data recorded in closely spaced planes show that the BFVs originate form at the transition between the high circumferential velocity region below the TLV center and the main passage flow radially inward from it. When the BFVs penetrate to the next passage across the tip gap or by circumventing the leading edge, they trigger a similar phenomenon there, sustaining the process. Further reduction in flow rate into the stall range increases the number and size of the backflow vortices, and they regularly propagate upstream of the leading edge of the next blade, where they increase the incidence angle in the tip corner. As this process proliferates circumferentially, the BFVs rotate with the blades, indicating that there is very little through flow across the tip region.

Abstract Simulations of turbulent mixing in two types of jet mixers were carried out using two CFD models, large eddy simulation and κ-ε model. Modelling approaches were compared with experimental data obtained by the application of particle image velocimetry and planar laser-induced fluorescence methods. Measured local microstructures of fluid velocity and inert tracer concentration can be used for direct validation of numerical simulations. Presented results show that for higher tested values of jet Reynolds number both models are in good agreement with the experiments. Differences between models were observed for lower Reynolds numbers when the effects of large scale inhomogeneity are important.

Turbulent transport of Reynolds stress by triple moment of fluctuating velocity and pressure-velocity correlation are evaluated from a DNS for wake of a rectangular cylinder located in a uniform flow. The turbulent diffusion transport of turbulent kinetic energy hardly correlates with its gradient vector, indicating that the generally accepted gradient diffusion model is inadequate. It is inferred that the separate modeling of the individual Reynolds stress component provides a better possibility for modeling the turbulent transport in this flow, because of the strong departure from the equilibrium state of turbulence. The possibility of the direct modeling of the pressure gradient-velocity correlation is discussed.
