Abstract The accuracy of computational fluid dynamic (CFD)-based heat transfer predictions have been examined of relevance to liquid cooling of IC engines at high engine loads where some nucleate boiling occurs. Predictions based on (i) the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solution and (ii) large eddy simulation (LES) have been generated. The purpose of these simulations is to establish the role of turbulence modeling on the accuracy and efficiency of heat transfer predictions for engine-like thermal conditions where published experimental data are available. A multiphase mixture modeling approach, with a volume-of-fluid interface-capturing method, has been employed. To predict heat transfer in the boiling regime, the empirical boiling correlation of Rohsenow is used for both RANS and LES. The rate of vapor-mass generation at the wall surface is determined from the heat flux associated with the evaporation phase change. Predictions via CFD are compared with published experimental data showing that LES gives only slightly more accurate temperature predictions compared to RANS but at substantially higher computational cost.

Conventional heat transfer design methods for turbine airfoils use 2-D boundary layer codes (BLC) combined with empiricism. While such methods may be applicable in the mid span of an airfoil, they would not be very accurate near the end-walls and airfoil tip where the flow is very three-dimensional (3-D) and complex. In order to obtain accurate heat transfer predictions along the entire span of a turbine airfoil, 3-D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) must be used. This paper describes the development of a CFD based design system to make heat transfer predictions. A 3-D, compressible, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes CFD solver with k-ω turbulence modeling was used. A wall integration approach was used for boundary layer prediction. First, the numerical approach was validated against a series of fundamental airfoil cases with available data. The comparisons were very favorable. Subsequently, it was applied to a real engine airfoil at typical design conditions. A discussion of the features of the airfoil heat transfer distribution is included.

Because of their interesting heat transfer and mechanical properties, metal foams have been proposed for several different applications, thermal and structural. This paper aims at pointing out the effective thermal fluid dynamic behavior of these new enhanced surfaces, which present high heat transfer area per unit of volume at the expense of high pressure drop. The paper presents the experimental heat transfer and pressure drop measurements relative to air flowing in forced convection through four different aluminum foams, when electrically heated. The tested aluminum foams present 5, 10, 20 and 40 PPI (pores per inch), porosity around 0.92–0.93, and 0.02 m of foam core height. The experimental heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops have been obtained by varying the air mass flow rate and the electrical power, which has been set at 25.0 kW m−2, 32.5 kW m−2, and 40.0 kW m−2. The results have been compared against those measured for 40 mm high samples, in order to study the effects of the foam core height on the heat transfer. Moreover, predictions from two recent models are compared with heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop experimental data. The predictions are in good agreement with experimental data.

The one equation Spalart–Allmaras (SA) turbulence model in an extended modular form is presented. It is employed for the prediction of crosswind flow around the lip of a 90 deg sector of an intake with and without surface roughness. The flow features around the lip are complex. There exists a region of high streamline curvature. For this, the Richardson number would suggest complete degeneration to laminar flow. Also, there are regions of high favorable pressure gradient (FPG) sufficient to laminarize a turbulent boundary layer (BL). This is all terminated by a shock and followed by a laminar separation. Under these severe conditions, the SA model is insensitive to capturing the effects of laminarization and the reenergization of eddy viscosity. The latter promotes the momentum transfer and correct reattachment prior to the fan face. Through distinct modules, the SA model has been modified to account for the effect of laminarization and separation induced transition. The modules have been implemented in the Rolls-Royce HYDRA computational fluid dynamic (CFD) solver. They have been validated over a number of experimental test cases involving laminarization and also surface roughness. The validated modules are finally applied in unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) mode to flow around an engine intake and comparisons made with measurements. Encouraging agreement is found and hence advances made towards a more reliable intake design framework.

Scale deposition on the heat transfer surfaces from water containing dissolved salts considerably reduces fuel economy and performance of the heat transfer equipment. In general, this problem is more serious during nucleate boiling due to the mechanisms of bubble formation and detachment. In this study, a large number of experiments were performed to determine the effect of fluid velocity, initial surface temperature, and bulk concentration on the rate of calcium carbonate deposition on heat transfer surfaces during subcooled flow boiling. A physically sound prediction model for the deposition process under these operating conditions has been developed which predicts the experimental data with good accuracy. Two previously published models are also discussed and used to predict the experimental data.

In recent years Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are increasingly used to model the air circulation and temperature environment inside the rooms of residential and office buildings to gain insight into the relative energy consumptions of various HVAC systems for cooling/heating for climate control and thermal comfort. This requires accurate simulation of turbulent flow and heat transfer for various types of ventilation systems using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations of fluid dynamics. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) or Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of Navier-Stokes equations is computationally intensive and expensive for simulations of this kind. As a result, vast majority of CFD simulations employ RANS equations in conjunction with a turbulence model. In order to assess the modeling requirements (mesh, numerical algorithm, turbulence model etc.) for accurate simulations, it is critical to validate the calculations against the experimental data. For this purpose, we use three well known benchmark validation cases, one for natural convection in 2D closed vertical cavity, second for forced convection in a 2D rectangular cavity and the third for mixed convection in a 2D square cavity. The simulations are performed on a number of meshes of different density using a number of turbulence models. It is found that k-epsilon two-equation turbulence model with a second-order algorithm on a reasonable mesh gives the best results. This information is then used to determine the modeling requirements (mesh, numerical algorithm, turbulence model etc.) for flows in 3D enclosures with different ventilation systems. In particular two cases are considered for which the experimental data is available. These cases are (1) air flow and heat transfer in a naturally ventilated room and (2) airflow and temperature distribution in an atrium. Good agreement with the experimental data and computations of other investigators is obtained.

The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), also called Karhunen-Loe`ve expansion, which extracts ‘coherent structures’ from experimental data, is a very efficient tool for analyzing and modeling turbulent flows. It has been shown that it converges faster than any other expansion in terms of kinetic energy (Lumley 1970). First, the POD is applied to the chaotic solution of the Lorenz equations. The dynamics of the Lorenz attractor is reconstructed by only the first three POD modes. In the second part of this paper, we show how the POD can be used in turbulence modeling. The particular case studied is the wall region of a turbulent boundary layer. In this flow, the velocity field is expanded into POD modes in the normal direction and Fourier modes in the streamwise and spanwise directions. Dynamical systems are obtained by Galerkin projections of the Navier Stokes equations onto the different modes. Aubry et al. (1988) applied the technique to derive and study a ten dimensional representation which reproduced qualitatively the bursting event experimentally observed. It is shown that streamwise modes, absent in Aubry et al.’s model, participate to the bursting events. This agrees remarkably well with experimental observations. In both examples, the dynamics of the original system is very well recovered from the contribution of only a few modes.

Abstract The review of numerical studies on supercritical pressure (SCP) coolants heat transfer and hydraulic resistance in turbulent flow in vertical round tubes based on Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and different models for turbulent viscosity is presented. The paper is the first part of the general analysis, the works based on using algebraic turbulence models of different complexity are considered in it. The main attention is paid to Petukhov-Medvetskaya and Popov et al. models. They were developed especially for simulating heat transfer in tubes of the coolants with significantly variable properties (droplet liquids, gases, SCP fluids) under heating and cooling conditions. These predictions were verified on the entire reliable experimental data base. It is shown that in the case of turbulent flow in vertical round tubes these models make it possible predicting heat transfer and hydraulic resistance characteristics of SCP flows that agree well with the existed reliable experimental data on normal and certain modes of deteriorated heat transfer, if significant influence of buoyancy and radical flow restructuring are absent. For the more complicated cases than a flow in round vertical tubes, as well as for the case of rather strong buoyancy effect, more sophisticated prediction techniques must be applied. The state-of-the-art of these methods and the problems of their application are considered in the Part II of the analysis.

A 3-D Thin Layer Navier-Stokes (TLNS) code for solving viscous supersonic flows is developed. The new code uses several numerical algorithms for space and time discretization together with appropriate turbulence modeling. Roe’s method is used for discretizing the convective terms and the central differencing scheme is employed for the viscous terms. An explicit time marching technique and a finite volume space discretization are used. The developed computational model can handle both laminar and turbulent flows. The Baldwin-Lomax model and Degani-Schiff modifications are used for turbulence modeling. The computational model is applied to a hypersonic laminar flow at Mach 7.95 around a cone at different incidence angles. The circumferential pressure distribution is compared with the experimental data. The cross-sectional Mach number contours are also presented. It is shown that in addition to the outer shock, a cross-flow shock wave is also present in the flow field. The cases of supersonic turbulent flows with Mach number 3 around a tangent-ogive with incidence angles of 6° and a secant-ogive with incidence angles of 10° are also studied. The circumferential pressure distributions are compared with the experimental data and the Euler code results and good agreement is obtained. The cross-sectional Mach number contours are also presented. It is shown that in this case also in addition to the outer shock, a cross-flow shock wave is also present at the incidence angle of 10°.

Applying the novel time- and passage-averaging operators, a reduced average-passage equation system is derived to remove the bodyforce and the blockage factor in Adamczyk’s average-passage equations. Like the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations the average-passage flow model does not contain sufficient information to determine its solution. Based on the rich throughflow analysis for axial-flow turbomachinery and numerous studies for centrifugal compressors, a semi-empirical model of the deterministic stress is developed for centrifugal compressors in the present study. Finally, the empirical model coupled with the interface approach is applied to predict the time-averaged flow field in a tested centrifugal compressor stage and the results are compared with experimental data. Using the same computational grids, the computational cost with the empirical model is slightly more than that with the mixing plane model, and a good agreement was obtained between the numerical results and experimental data.

Leading edge impingement systems are increasingly being used for high pressure turbine blades in gas turbine engines, in regions where very high heat loads are encountered. The flow structure in such systems can be very complex and high resolution experimental data is required for engine-realistic systems to enable code validation and optimal design. This paper presents spatially resolved heat transfer distributions for an engine-realistic impingement system for multiple different hole geometries, with jet Reynolds numbers in the range of 13,000–22,000. Following this, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes computational fluid dynamics simulations are compared to the experimental data. The experimental results show variation in heat transfer distributions for different geometries, however average levels are primarily dependent on jet Reynolds number. The computational simulations match the shape of the distributions well however with a consistent over-prediction of around 10% in heat transfer levels.
