Heat Transfer to Supercritical Water in Advanced Power Engineering Applications: An Industrial Scale Test Rig

Heat transfer to supercritical water in heated tubes and channels is relevant for steam generators in conventional power plants and future concepts for supercritical nuclear and solar-thermal power plants. A new experimental facility, the high pressure evaporation rig, setup at the Institute for Energy Systems (Technische Universität München) aims to provide heat transfer data to fill the existing knowledge gaps at these conditions. The test rig consists of a closed-loop high pressure cycle, in which de-ionized water is fed to an instrumented test section heated by the application of direct electrical current. It is designed to withstand a maximum pressure of 380 bar at 580 °C in the test section. The maximum power rating of the system is 1 MW. The test section is a vertical tube (material: AISI A213/P91) with a 7000 mm heated length, a 15.7 mm internal diameter, and a wall thickness of 5.6 mm. It is equipped with 70 thermocouples distributed evenly along its length. It enables the determination of heat transfer coefficients in the supercritical region at various steady-state or transient conditions. In a first series of tests, experiments are conducted to investigate normal and deteriorated heat transfer (DHT) under vertical upward flow conditions. The newly generated data and literature data are used to evaluate different correlations available for modeling heat transfer coefficients at supercritical pressures.

Eleven correlations proposed for supercritical heat-transfer coefficients were assessed against a set of experimental data obtained recently with supercritical water flow in a vertical annular test section at Xi’an Jiaotong University. The inner heated rod of the test section had an outer diameter of 8 mm, while the outer unheated tube had an inner diameter of 16 mm (resulting in a gap size of 4 mm). The experiment covered pressure range from 23 to 28 MPa, mass-flux range from 350 to 1000 kg/m2s, and heat-flux range from 200 to 1000 kW/m2. The assessment shows relatively good agreement between predicted and experimental heat-transfer coefficients for several correlations. Some discrepancies have been observed at the region where deteriorated heat transfer, and are attributed to the modified Dittus-Boelter formulation that captures mainly the normal heat-transfer region. Overall, the Dittus-Boelter correlation is shown applicable only for the normal heat-transfer region, and significantly overpredicts the heat-transfer coefficient at the deteriorated heat-transfer region. The correlation of Bishop et al. appears valid for the current experimental database, particularly for high mass fluxes.

The aim of this investigation was to study automotive disc brake cooling characteristics experimentally using a specially developed spin rig and numerically using finite element (FE) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods. All three modes of heat transfer (conduction, convection and radiation) have been analysed along with the design features of the brake assembly and their interfaces. The spin rig proved to be very valuable equipment; experiments enabled the determination of the thermal contact resistance between the disc and wheel carrier. The analyses demonstrated the sensitivity of this mode of heat transfer to clamping pressure. For convective cooling, heat transfer coefficients were measured and very similar results were obtained from spin rig experiments and CFD analyses. The nature of radiative heat dissipation implies substantial e ects at high temperatures. The results indicate substantial change of emissivity throughout the brake application. The influence of brake cooling parameters on the disc temperature has been investigated by FE modelling of a long drag brake application. The thermal power dissipated during the drag brake application has been analysed to reveal the contribution of each mode of heat transfer.

This paper presents the preliminary results of using artificial neural networks in the prediction of gas side convective heat transfer coefficients on a high pressure turbine blade. The artificial neural network approach which has three hidden layers was developed and trained by nine inputs and it generates one output. Input and output data were taken from an experimental research program performed at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics by Camci and Arts [5,6] and Camci [7]. Inlet total pressure, inlet total temperature, inlet turbulence intensity, inlet and exit Mach numbers, blade wall temperature, incidence angle, specific location of measurement and suction/pressure side specification of the blade were used as input parameters and calculated heat transfer coefficient around a rotor blade used as output. After the network is trained with experimental data, heat transfer coefficients are interpolated for similar experimental conditions and compared with both experimental measurements and CFD solutions. CFD analysis was carried out to validate the algorithm and to determine heat transfer coefficients for a closely related test case. Good agreement was obtained between CFD results and neural network predictions.

Abstract In this study, we use infrared thermography to calculate local heat transfer coefficients of top and bottom heated flows of near-critical carbon dioxide in an array of parallel microchannels. These data are used to evaluate the relative importance of buoyancy for different flow arrangements. A Joule heated thin wall made of Inconel 718 applies a uniform heat flux either above or below the horizontal flow. A Torlon PAI test section consists of three parallel microchannels with a hydraulic diameter of 923 μm. The reduced inlet temperature (TR = 1.006) and reduced pressure (PR = 1.03) are held constant. For each heater orientation, the mass flux (520 kgm−2s−2 ≤ G ≤ 800 kgm−2s−2) and heat flux (4.7 Wcm−2 ≤ q″ ≤ 11.1 Wcm−2) are varied. A 2D resistance network analysis method calculates the bulk temperatures and heat transfer coefficients. In this analysis, we divide the test section into approximately 250 segments along the stream-wise direction. We then calculate the bulk temperatures using the enthalpy from the upstream segment, the heat flux in a segment, and the pressure. To isolate the effect of buoyancy, we screen the data to omit conditions where flow acceleration may be important or where relaminarization may occur. In the developed region of the channel, there was a 10 to 15 percent reduction of the local heat transfer coefficients for the upward heating mode compared to downward heating with the same mass and heat fluxes. Thus buoyancy effects should be considered when developing correlations for these types of flow.

This paper reports an experimental study on flow boiling of water in a minichannel. Flow boiling heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops were measured and the data were compared with existing correlations. The effect of pressure was the major objectives in this study and the range of pressure was 1 to 18 bars. The experimental apparatus consisted mainly of a minichannel test section, gear pump, pre-heater, pressurizer, condenser and evaporator. The evaporator was used for variation of vapor quality at the inlet of test section. The pressurizer controls the desired system pressure. The test section is a round tube of 1.73 mm inside diameter, made of 316 stainless steel. The test section and the evaporator tubes were heated by DC electric current through the tubes. The measured flow boiling heat transfer coefficients showed two distinct regions; relatively high heat transfer coefficients at low vapor quality and lower heat transfer coefficients at higher vapor quality. This observation implies the change of flow regime, slug to annular flow. Comparisons of the experimental data and the prediction of correlations (Gungor & Winterton, 1987; Tran et al., 1996; Kandlikar, 2003) showed large discrepancy in both regions.

Metal foams made by the SlipReactionFoamSintering (SRFS)-process are investigated. In these foams the pores are produced by a reaction between iron and a weak acid. The generated hydrogen forms pores in a metal powder slurry. These pores remain in the foam after sintering. Also secondary pores are found in these foams because of the sintering of the metal powder slurry. The metal powder base of the foams is Inconel 625 and Hastelloy B. Foam samples with a variety of different porosities of the two metals in the range of about 62% to 87% are used as well as samples made out of sintered metal powder which were not foamed with porosities of around 50%. The motivation for this study is to use these foams as combustion chamber walls in gas fired power plants. By using porous walls effusion cooling can be applied to keep the wall temperatures low. Air is used as a fluid to study the flow characteristics of these samples. Their pressure drop with air at room temperature is measured in the range of velocities of up to around 1 m/s. The parameters characterizing the foams are obtained using the Darcy-Forchheimer equations resulting in the permeability and the inertial coefficients. The dependency on the porosity is discussed. The volumetric heat transfer is measured for the foams by a transient method based on an air flow with a sinusoidal temperature wave, which is attenuated by the sample. The obtained volumetric heat transfer coefficients are discussed and transferred to Nu-Re correlations. Correlations between the heat transfer coefficients and the pressure drop coefficients are made.

An experiment of natural circulation of supercritical water in parallel channels was performed in bare tubes of inner diameter 7.98 mm and heated length 1.3 m, covering the ranges of pressure of 24.7–25.5 MPa, mass flux of 400–1000  kg/m2 s, and heat flux of up to 1.83  MW/m2. When the heat flux reached 1.12  MW/m2, the outlet water temperature jumped from 325°C to 360°C, associated with a decrease in the flow rate and an initiation of dynamic instability. When the heat flux exceeded 1.39  MW/m2, the flow instability was stronger, and the flow rate increased in one channel and decreased in another one. Until the heat flux reached 1.61  MW/m2, the outlet water temperatures of two channels reached the pseudocritical point, and the flow rates of two channels tended to close each other. The experiment with a single heated channel was also performed for comparison. The measurements on the heat-transfer coefficients (HTCs) were compared to the calculations by the Bishop et al., Jackson’s, and Mokry et al. correlations, showing different agreements within various conditions.

Experimental investigations on boiling heat transfer coefficients of boiling flows in rectangular narrow channel under rolling motion condition are performed. The cross section of the testing rectangular narrow channel is 2×40 mm, and the mechanical rolling thermal-hydraulic experimental facility is used in the experimental research of boiling heat transfer characteristics. Deionized water is used as the working fluid. The results show that the amplitude of boiling heat transfer coefficients of rectangular narrow channel increases with increasing rolling amplitude and rolling period of the rolling platform, the time average boiling heat transfer coefficients of test section in rolling motion are equal to the coefficients of the test section at equilibrium position, and with the increase of rolling amplitude and rolling period the time average boiling heat transfer coefficient almost unchanged. The amplitude of boiling heat transfer coefficients increases with increasing heat flux and flow rate, while decreases with the increase of system pressure. The curve of boiling heat transfer coefficient fluctuations of rectangular narrow channel is close to sine or cosine curve when the rolling period less than 15 seconds.

Leakage flow and heat transfer of scaled-up stepped labyrinth seals were investigated experimentally and numerically. The experiments were conducted in a test rig under steady conditions. For different geometries and pressure ratios a finite element program was used to determine the temperature distribution and subsequently the heat transfer coefficients. In verifying the experimental results, the flow field of the seals was calculated numerically by a finite difference program. Heat transfer coefficients were derived utilizing the well-known analogies between heat transfer and wall friction.
