This paper shows experimental results obtained from a T100 microturbine connected with different volume sizes. The activity was carried out with the test rig developed at the University of Genoa for hybrid system emulation. However, these results apply to all the advanced cycles where a microturbine is connected with an additional external component responsible for volume size increase. Even if the tests were performed with a microturbine, similar analyses can be extended to large size turbines. A modular vessel was used to perform and to compare the tests with different volume sizes. To highlight the volume size effect, preliminary experimental results were carried out considering the transient response due to an on/off bleed valve operation. So, the main differences between system parameters obtained for a bleed line closing operation are compared considering three different volume sizes. The main results reported in this paper are related to surge operations. To produce surge conditions in this test rig, a valve operating in the main air path was closed to generate unstable behavior for the three different volume sizes. Particular focus was devoted to the operational curve plotted on the compressor map. The vibration frequency analysis showed significant amplitude increase not only during surge events but also close to the unstable condition. In details, possible surge precursor indicators were obtained to be used for the detection of risky machine operations. The experimental data collected during these tests are analyzed with the objective of designing control systems to prevent surge conditions.

Even if the tests were performed with a microturbine (for laboratory scale and for the related research interest in innovative cycles), similar analyses can be extended to on large size turbines. The main power systems including the effect of an additional volume connected with a turbine are: fuel cell based hybrid plants, humid cycles, externally fired layouts and innovative systems including high temperature thermal storage devices. Since in this case a 100 kW turbine was used, the volume was located between the recuperator outlet and the combustor inlet as in the typical cases related to small size plants. A modular vessel was used to perform and to compare the tests with different volume sizes. To highlight the volume size effect, preliminary experimental results were carried out considering the transient response due to an on/off bleed valve operation. So, the main differences between system parameters obtained for a bleed line closing operation are compared considering three different volume sizes. The main results reported in this paper are related to surge operations. This analysis was carried out to extend the knowledge about this risk condition: the systems equipped with large volume size connected with the machine present critical issues related to surge prevention especially during transient operations. For instance, if the T100 machine is operating with large volume components, the standard shutdown procedure can produce surge condition. This behavior is due to a slow depressurization rate in comparison with a standard microturbine. So, to produce surge conditions in this test rig, a valve operating in the main air path was closed to generate unstable behavior. It was possible to compare the effect of different volume sizes on main properties of the system using a modular vessel. Particular focus was devoted to the operational curve plotted on the compressor map. The system was equipped with different dynamic probes to measure the vibrations during normal and surge operations. The frequency analysis showed significant vibration increase not only during surge events but also close to the unstable condition. In details, possible surge precursor indicators were obtained to be used for the detection of risky machine operations. Since these surge precursors are considered important parameters for the control system point of view, an extensive experimental analysis was carried out considering the influence of volume size. These precursors were defined to produce control data (e.g. an on/off signal for a bleed valve) for surge prevention. The experimental data collected during these tests are analyzed with the objective of designing control systems to prevent surge conditions.

Trackside lubricators are designed to deliver grease to passing wheel flanges to reduce wheel and rail wear on curves. Ensuring that they are set up to deliver sufficient grease for the range of vehicles passing a site can be a challenge. For example, vehicle dynamics modelling and site investigations have shown that the wheels of passenger vehicles do not run as close to the rail face as those of freight vehicles, meaning that they are less likely to contact the grease and lubricate subsequent curves. To investigate the effects of different trackside devices, and the influence of parameters governing grease pickup, including lateral wheel displacement and pump durations, a bespoke test rig was built at the University of Sheffield. The rig used a scaled wheel, a short section of rail and a modern trackside lubricator set-up. Experiments involving different lateral wheel displacements and pumping durations were carried out, in addition to the visualisation of the size of the grease bulb. This showed how a grease bulb grows. It also indicated that a worn profile is likely to require greater wheel displacement to make contact with grease bulbs when compared to a new wheel profile. The experimental results showed that increasing pickup of grease can be expected when an additional component called a GreaseGuide™ was fitted to a regular grease delivery unit (GDU) on the rail. The efficiency of grease pickup was investigated, and test results exploring increasing pump durations have indicated a relationship between pickup and bulb size. To validate the use of the scaled rig, similar tests were carried out using a full-scale test rig. The full-scale results were compared to the experimental results of the scaled wheel rig. This showed that whilst there were differences between the two test rigs in absolute values and anomalous results, overall trends were the same on both test scales. The effect of temperature on bulb size and pumpability of grease was also investigated. This work can be extended further by using the same method to investigate other parameters that affect the lubrication of curves. This can lead to optimised lubricator set-up to ensure that the track is fully lubricated all the time.

Only few studies have been published on EHD contacts that experienced simultaneously rolling, sliding and spinning motions. This paper describes a new test rig especially designed to simulate such operating conditions while imposing normal load and speeds as those found in real life mechanisms. Then, experimental results are presented and discussed.

Many important industrial problems in the control of rotating machinery with active magnetic bearings concern the minimization of the rotor vibration response to poorly characterized disturbances at a single or several shaft locations, these typically not corresponding to those of a sensor or actuator. Herein, we examine experimental results of a multivariable controller obtained via μ synthesis with a laboratory test rig. These indicate that a significant improvement in performance can be obtained with a multivariable μ controller over that achieved with an optimal decentralized PD controller.

This project began in response to a perceived need to assess students’ perceptions with respect to the emerging use of audience response systems (clickers) in several mid- to large-size undergraduate courses at the University of Victoria. We developed and validated a “Clicker Use Survey” to gather students’ opinions with respect to clicker utility and the impact of clicker use on their learning. With the collected data we generated a set of baseline distributions to support assessment of various clicker use protocols and created a self-evaluation tool to share with instructors to support teacher reflection on the efficacy of their clicker practices. We also provided a sample self-evaluation to model the use of the tool. Links to the survey instrument, baseline data and self-evaluation tool, and sample self-evaluation are provided.

As well known, rockfill behaviour is strongly influenced by both intrinsic (mineralogy and size of particles, grain shapes, soil grading etc.) and state parameters (relative density, stress state, relative humidity). To investigate their mechanical response to stresses and relative humidity (RH) loadings, a large size triaxial device (H = 410 mm, D = 200 mm) has been developed at the University of Naples Federico II (Italy), including modifications required to impose partially saturated conditions in the specimen by means of the vapour equilibrium technique. In order to evaluate local axial and radial strains and global volumetric strains in partially saturated conditions, a magnetic shape detector device has been designed and installed. The accuracy of this system has been evaluated in some isotropic compression triaxial tests on compacted sandy-gravel specimens. The experimental data clearly show the effectiveness of the magnetic system in the measurement of axial displacements while the measurement in radial direction appear to be strongly affected by the non-linearity of the complex magnetic field generated during the test and requires further checking tests.

The GridRPC model [17] is an emerging standard promoted by the Global Grid Forum (GGF) that defines how to perform remote client-server computations on a distributed architecture. In this model data are sent back to the client at the end of every computation. This implies unnecessary communications when computed data are needed by an other server in further computations. Since, communication time is sometimes the dominant cost of remote computations, this cost has to be lowered. Several tools instantiate the GridRPC model such as NetSolve developed at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA, and DIET developed at LIP laboratory, ENS Lyon, France. They are usually called Network Enabled Servers (NES). In this paper, we present a discussion of the data management solutions chosen for these two NES (NetSolve and DIET) as well as experimental results.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the direct evaporate cooler in hot and humid regions with two different types of agro-based materials. In our experimental study, the locally available agro materials luffa (Sponge Gourd), zizanioides (Vetiver) were used with various thickness and the experimental results were compared with mathematical values. The operating parameters of pad thickness, air velocity, were changed and the performance of the cooler was analyzed. A test rig was designed and fabricated to collect experimental data. The performance of the evaporative cooler was evaluated based on the ambient condition. The analysis of the data indicated that cooling saturation efficiency improve with decrease of air velocity and higher pad thickness. It was shown that zizanioides-based pad with 160[Formula: see text]mm thickness has the higher performance (88%) at 4.5[Formula: see text]m/s air velocity in comparison with luffa pad materials. The experimental results of outlet air temperature and number of transfer units (NTU) were compared with mathematical model. The test results were within the limit of 15% and 10% to mathematical values.

Plagiarism is an act that is considered by the university as a fraud by taking someone ideas or writings without mentioning the references and claimed as his own. Plagiarism detection system is generally implement string matching algorithm in a text document to search for common words between documents. There are some algorithms used for string matching, two of them are Rabin-Karp and Jaro-Winkler Distance algorithms. Rabin-Karp algorithm is one of compatible algorithms to solve the problem of multiple string patterns, while, Jaro-Winkler Distance algorithm has advantages in terms of time. A plagiarism detection application is developed and tested on different types of documents, i.e. doc, docx, pdf and txt. From the experimental results, we obtained that both of these algorithms can be used to perform plagiarism detection of those documents, but in terms of their effectiveness, Rabin-Karp algorithm is much more effective and faster in the process of detecting the document with the size more than 1000 KB.
