Dynamics of a Leidenfrost Droplet Modulated by Electrowetting

Leidenfrost phenomenon is closely related to film boiling and the critical heat flux (CHF) limit of boiling heat transfer. Understanding the mechanisms of Leidenfrost phenomenon and devising effective ways to suppress it is of great interest to the heat transfer enhancement community. In this work, a synchronized high-speed optical imaging and infrared (IR) thermography approach was employed to investigate the dynamics of a Leidenfrost droplet under the influence of electrowetting (EW). The Leidenfrost droplet was produced by dispensing a water drop on a Teflon-coated silicon wafer maintained at a wall temperature of Twall = 200 °C. Both direct-current (DC) and alternating-current (AC) electric fields were applied to induce EW effect to suppress the Leidenfrost state. The interfacial instabilities of the Leidenfrost droplet were observed, and the instantaneous temperature and heat flux distributions on the heating surface were measured. The results suggest that the electrical forces destabilize the liquid-vapor interface and cause the vapor film that insulates the heating surface from the droplet to collapse. Re-establishment of the liquid-solid contact helps to drastically improve the heat transfer, as evidenced by the reduced surface temperature and the enhanced heat flux.

The results of our work and a number of foreign studies indicate that the sharp increase in the heat transfer parameters (specific heat flux q and heat transfer coefficient _) at the boiling of nanofluids as compared to the base liquid (water) is due not only and not so much to the increase of the thermal conductivity of the nanofluids, but an intensification of the boiling process caused by a change in the state of the heating surface, its topological and chemical properties (porosity, roughness, wettability). The latter leads to a change in the internal characteristics of the boiling process and the average temperature of the superheated liquid layer. This circumstance makes it possible, on the basis of physical models of the liquids boiling and taking into account the parameters of the surface state (temperature, pressure) and properties of the coolant (the density and heat capacity of the liquid, the specific heat of vaporization and the heat capacity of the vapor), and also the internal characteristics of the boiling of liquids, to calculate the value of specific heat flux q. In this paper, the difference in the mechanisms of heat transfer during the boiling of single-phase (water) and two-phase nanofluids has been studied and a quantitative estimate of the q values for the boiling of the nanofluid is carried out based on the internal characteristics of the boiling process. The satisfactory agreement of the calculated values with the experimental data is a confirmation that the key factor in the growth of the heat transfer intensity at the boiling of nanofluids is indeed a change in the nature and microrelief of the heating surface. Combustion chamber wall heat transfer is a major contributor to efficiency losses in diesel engines. In this context, thermal swing materials (adapting to the surrounding gas temperature) have been pinpointed as a promising mitigative solution. In this study, experiments are carried out in a high-pressure/high-temperature vessel to (a) characterise the wall heat transfer process ensuing from wall impingement of a combusting fuel spray, and (b) evaluate insulative improvements provided by a coating that promotes thermal swing. The baseline experimental condition resembles that of Spray A from the Engine Combustion Network, while additional variations are generated by modifying the ambient temperature as well as the injection pressure and duration. Wall heat transfer and wall temperature measurements are time-resolved and accompanied by concurrent high-speed imaging of natural luminosity. An investigation with an uncoated wall is carried out with several sensor locations around the stagnation point, elucidating sensor-to-sensor variability and setup symmetry. Surface heat flux follows three phases: (i) an initial peak, (ii) a slightly lower plateau dependent on the injection duration, and (iii) a slow decline. In addition to the uncoated reference case, the investigation involves a coating made of porous zirconia, an established thermal swing material. With a coated setup, the projection of surface quantities (heat flux and temperature) from the immersed measurement location requires additional numerical analysis of conjugate heat transfer. Starting from the traces measured beneath the coating, the surface quantities are obtained by solving a one-dimensional inverse heat transfer problem. The present measurements are complemented by CFD simulations supplemented with recent rough-wall models. The surface roughness of the coated specimen is indicated to have a significant impact on the wall heat flux, offsetting the expected benefit from the thermal swing material.

This paper investigates the effects of gear geometry, rotational speed and applied load, as well as lubrication conditions on surface temperature of high-speed gear teeth. The analytical approach and procedure for estimating frictional heat flux and heat transfer coefficients of gear teeth in high-speed operational conditions was developed and accounts for the effect of oil mist as a cooling medium. Numerical simulations of tooth temperature based on finite element analysis were established to investigate temperature distributions and variations over a range of applied load and rotational speed, which compared well with experimental measurements. A sensitivity analysis of surface temperature to gear configuration, frictional heat flux, heat transfer coefficients, and oil and ambient temperatures was conducted and the major parameters influencing surface temperature were evaluated.

Boiling heat transfer from inclined surfaces is examined and an analytical model of bubble growth and nucleate boiling is presented. The model predicts the average heat flux during nucleate boiling by considering alternating near-wall liquid and vapor periods. It expresses the heat flux in terms of the bubble departure diameter, frequency and duration of contact with the heating surface. Experiments were conducted over a wide range of upward and downward-facing surface orientations and the results were compared to model predictions. More active microlayer agitation and mixing along the surface as well as more frequent bubble sweeps along the heating surface provide the key reasons for more effective heat transfer with downward facing surfaces as compared to upward facing cases. Additional aspects of the role of surface inclination on boiling dynamics are quantified and discussed.

A test rig was constructed to investigate flow boiling in an electrically heated horizontal mini-channel array. The test section is made of copper and consists of twelve parallel mini-channels. The channels are 1 mm deep, 1 mm wide and 250 mm long. The test section is heated from underneath with six cartridge heaters. The channels are covered with a glass plate to allow visual observations of the flow patterns using a high-speed video-camera. The wall temperatures are measured at five positions along the channel axis with two resistance thermometers in a specified distance in heat flow direction. Local heat transfer coefficients are obtained by calculating the local heat flux. The working fluids are deionised water and ethanol. The experiments were performed under near atmospheric pressure (0.94 bar to 1.2 bar absolute). The inlet temperature was kept constant at 20°C. The measurements were taken for three mass fluxes (120; 150; 185 kg/m2s) at heat fluxes from 7 to 375 kW/m2. Heat transfer coefficients are presented for single phase forced convection, subcooled and saturated flow boiling conditions. The heat transfer coefficient increases slightly with rising heat flux for single phase flow. A strong increase is observed in subcooled flow boiling. At high heat flux the heat transfer coefficient decreases slightly with increasing heat flux. The application of ethanol instead of water leads to an increase of the surface temperature. At the same low heat flux flow boiling heat transfer occurs with ethanol, but in the experiments with water single phase heat transfer is still dominant. It is because of the lower specific heat capacity of ethanol compared to water. There is a slight influence of the mass flux in the investigated parameter range. The pictures of a high-speed video-camera are analysed for the two-phase flow-pattern identification.

Abstract The effect of applied electric fields on the behavior of liquids and their interaction with solid surfaces has been a topic of active interest for many decades. This has important implications in phase change heat transfer processes such as evaporation, boiling, and condensation. Although the effect of low to moderate voltages has been studied, there is a need to explore the interaction of high electric fields with liquid drops and bubbles, and their effect on heat transfer and phase change. In this study, we employ a high speed optical camera to study the dynamics of a liquid drop impacting a hot substrate under the application of high electric fields. Experimental results indicate a significant change in the pre- and post-impact behavior of the drop. Prior to impact, the applied electric field elongates the drop in the direction of the electric field. Post-impact, the recoil phase of the drop is significantly affected by charging effects. Further, a significant amount of micro-droplet ejection is observed with an increase in the applied voltage.

Submerged jet impingement boiling has the potential to enhance pool boiling heat transfer rates. In most practical situations, the surface could consist of multiple heat sources that dissipate heat at different rates resulting in a surface heat flux that is non-uniform. This paper discusses the effect of submerged jet impingement on the wall temperature characteristics and heat transfer for a non-uniform heat flux. A mini-jet is caused to impinge on a polished silicon surface from a nozzle having an inner diameter of 1.16 mm. A 25.4 mm diameter thin-film circular serpentine heater, deposited on the bottom of the silicon wafer, is used to heat the surface. Deionized degassed water is used as the working fluid and the jet and pool are subcooled by 20°C. Voltage drop between sensors leads drawn from the serpentine heater are used to identify boiling events. Heater surface temperatures are determined using infrared thermography. High-speed movies of the boiling front are recorded and used to interpret the surface temperature contours. Local heat transfer coefficients indicate significant enhancement upto radial locations of 2.6 jet diameters for a Reynolds number of 2580 and upto 6 jet diameters for a Reynolds number of 5161.

The primary purpose of this paper is to introduce into boiling heat transfer certain basic ideas from which several critical conditions are derived. The heat transfer in nucleate boiling is considered as being limited by the maximum rate of bubble generation from a unit area of the heating surface. With certain simplified assumptions, an equation is obtained for the first critical heat flux of nucleate boiling with and without forced convection and subcooling.

An experimental study is conducted to investigate the micro-scale heat transfer at an evaporating moving 3-phase contact line. The moving evaporating meniscus is formed by pushing or sucking a liquid column of HFE7100 in a vertical channel of 600 μm width using a syringe pump. The gas atmosphere is pure HFE7100 vapor. This channel is built using two parallel flat plates. A 10 μm thick stainless steel heating foil forms a part of one of the flat plates. Two-dimensional micro-scale temperature field at the back side of the heating foil is observed with a high speed infrared camera with a spatial resolution of 14.8 μm × 14.8 μm and an in-situ calibration procedure is used at each pixel element. A high speed CMOS camera is used to capture the shape of the moving meniscus, the images are post-processed to track the free surface of the meniscus. Local heat fluxes from the heater to the evaporating meniscus are calculated from the measured transient wall temperature distributions using an energy balance for each pixel element. In the vicinity of the 3-phase contact line the heat flux distribution shows a local maximum due to high evaporation rates at this small region. The local maximum heat flux at the 3-phase contact line area is found to be dependent on the input heat flux, the velocity and the direction of the meniscus movement. The results give detailed insight into the specific dynamic micro-scale heat and fluid transport process.

This paper demonstrates the advantages and prospects of transparent design of the heating surface for the simultaneous study of the hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics of spray cooling. It was shown that the high-speed recording from the reverse side of such heater allows to identify individual droplets before their impact on the forming liquid film, which makes it possible to measure their sizes with high spatial resolution. In addition, such format enables one to estimate the number of droplets falling onto the impact surface and to study the features of the interface evolution during the droplets’ impacts. In particular, the experiments showed various possible scenarios for this interaction, such as the formation of small-scale capillary waves during impacts of small droplets, as well as the appearance of “craters” and splashing crowns in the case of large ones. Moreover, the unsteady temperature field during spray cooling in regimes without boiling was investigated using high-speed infrared thermography. Based on the obtained data, the intensity of heat transfer during spray cooling for various liquid flow rates and heat fluxes was analyzed. It was shown that, for the studied regimes, the heat transfer coefficient weakly depends on the heat flux density and is primarily determined by the flow rate. In addition, the comparison of the processes of spray cooling and nucleate boiling was made, and an analogy was shown in the mechanisms that determine their intensity of heat transfer.
