Characteristics of Turbulent Flows Over Forward Facing Steps in Adverse Pressure Gradients Based on Two-Point Analyses

This study reports the results of turbulent flows forward facing steps (FFS) in pressure gradients using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique to obtain data up to 68 step heights downstream. The contours of two-point velocity correlations indicate that regardless of the pressure gradients, the physical size of the coherent structures characterized by the autocorrelations grows as the flow develops downstream along the step. Additionally, adverse pressure gradient (APG) elevates the size of the autocorrelations.

Over the last few decades, the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique has become an interesting tool used to measure displacements in the field of experimental mechanics. This paper presents a procedure to interpret PIV displacements, measured following an Eulerian scheme, with the purpose of providing accumulated displacements, velocities, accelerations, and strains on points representing physical particles. Strains are computed as the gradient of displacements. When compared with other standard procedures already published, the presented methodology is especially well suited to interpret large strains. The basis of the procedure is to map displacement increments measured through PIV analysis on the subset (or patch) centres into numerical particles that are defined as portions of the moving masses whose deformation is analyzed. The implementation of the method is explained in detail, highlighting its simplicity. The procedure can be used as a post-processor of currently available PIV software packages. The methodology is first applied to synthetic cases of rectangular samples in which known displacements are imposed and also to a sandy slope failure experiment involving large displacements. The method reproduces satisfactorily the recorded images.

This paper investigates an isothermal free water jet discharging horizontally from a circular nozzle (9mm) into a stationary body of water. The jet exit velocity was 2.5m∕s and the exit Reynolds number was 22,500. The large-scale structures in the far field were investigated by performing a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis of the velocity field obtained using a particle image velocimetry system. The number of modes used for the POD reconstruction of the velocity fields was selected to recover 40% of the turbulent kinetic energy. A vortex identification algorithm was then employed to quantify the size, circulation, and direction of rotation of the exposed vortices. A statistical analysis of the distribution of number, size, and strength of the identified vortices was carried out to explore the characteristics of the coherent structures. The results clearly reveal that a substantial number of vortical structures of both rotational directions exist in the far-field region of the jet. The number of vortices decreases in the axial direction, while their size increases. The mean circulation magnitude is preserved in the axial direction. The results also indicate that the circulation magnitude is directly proportional to the square of the vortex radius and the constant of proportionality is a function of the axial location.

In this study, the characteristics of flow emerging from the inlet of the intake port in the cylinder were investigated experimentally. A particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to measure the velocity distribution in order to observe and analyse the flow behaviour. High-image-density PIV provided acquisition of patterns of instantaneous and averaged vorticity and velocity, revealing the detail of the flow characteristics in the cylinder cavity. With this measuring technique, it is possible to study the effect of intake valve geometry on the flow behaviours. The results showed that the flow structure changed substantially along the cylinder stroke due to the geometry of the intake valve port.

The continuous tendency in modern aeroengine gas turbines towards reduction of blade count and ducts length may lead to aerodynamic loading increase beyond the limit of boundary layer separation. For this reason boundary layer separation control methods, up to now mostly employed in external aerodynamics, begin to be experimented in internal flows applications. The present paper reports the results of a detailed experimental study on low profile vortex generators used to control boundary layer separation on a large-scale flat plate with prescribed adverse pressure gradients. Inlet turbulent boundary layer conditions and pressure gradients are representative of aggressive turbine intermediate ducts. This activity is part of a joint European research program on Aggressive Intermediate Duct Aerodynamics (AIDA). The pressure gradients on the flat plate are generated by increasing the aperture angle of a movable wall opposite to the flat plate. To avoid separation on the movable wall, boundary layer suction is applied on it. Complementary measurements (surface static pressure distributions, surface flow visualizations by means of wall mounted tufts, instantaneous and time-averaged velocity fields in the meridional and cross-stream planes by means of Particle Image Velocimetry) have been used to survey the flow with and without vortex generators. Three different pressure gradients, which induce turbulent separation in absence of boundary layer control, were tested. Vortex generators height and location effects on separation reduction and pressure recovery increase were investigated. For the most effective VGs configurations detailed analyses of the flow field were performed, that demonstrate the effectiveness of this passive control device to control separation in diffusing ducts. Particle Image Velocimetry vector and vorticity plots illustrate the mechanisms by which the vortex generators transfer momentum towards the surface, re-energizing the near-wall flow and preserving the boundary layer from separation.
