Vehicle steering comfort is an important issue for steering control of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), especially the shared steering control systems. However, it is difficult to be evaluated objectively, that is, usually evaluated subjectively by the driver. This paper aims to develop an objective evaluation method of vehicle steering comfort, which is mainly based on the steering efficiency of the driver estimated by electromyography (EMG). First, the driver steering efficiency, as a key factor reflecting driver's maneuver energetics and some neurological control behaviors, is calculated in two steering conditions based on the EMG. In this process, the subjective evaluation of the vehicle steering comfort is obtained simultaneously else by a test driver. Unlike the traditional steering efficiency calculated from steering gear, the driver steering efficiency does not only partly present the energy consumption of driver itself but also the driver–vehicle interaction. And then, the relation between the steering efficiency and subjective evaluation is analyzed based on both linear regression and spearman correlation analyses. This challenging work investigates the interaction between the quantitative energy consumption and driver's subjective feeling and builds bridge between them. At last, an objective evaluation method of vehicle steering comfort using the steering efficiency is proposed, which provides a selection with quantitative evaluation. The proposed method is helpful to improve the steering control by giving a quantitative index.

In order to improve the transmission efficiency and carrying capacity of conventional single-belt continuously variable transmission (CVT), one new type of dual-belt CVT is proposed in this paper. Under the situation that this new dual-belt CVT should be switched between single- and dual-belt modes frequently according to driver’s intention and road conditions, so five objective evaluation indexes of mode switching quality for the dual-belt CVT are proposed, considering the aspects of vehicle power, comfort, and transmission durability comprehensively. Then, the objective evaluation model of mode switching quality is established by the BP neural network optimized by the genetic algorithm. It is found that the prediction results are consistent with the subjective evaluation. After analyzing the influence of the selected five evaluation indexes on the prediction results, it is obvious that these five evaluation indexes of mode switching quality for dual-belt CVT are reasonable.

Abstract In the field of machine vision, image edge detection is an important technology, which can make necessary preparation for the later image processing. Consequently, accurate evaluation of the edge detection effect of the processed image is a more critical technology. In this paper, the new three criteria are proposed, which is based on Canny's three criteria for edge detection. Through theoretical analysis, three quantitative basic evaluation indexes are given to the new three criteria, namely SSIM index of image reconstruction similarity, BIdx index of edge reliability and CIdx index of edge continuity. Additionally, noise evaluation criteria is also considered. Then the four basic evaluation indexes are fused to get the objective evaluation index EIdx of image edge detection. Finally, the experimental data show that the accuracy of the method is better than that of the subjective evaluation system.

As advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) increase in functionality, so do the functional requirements of their visual displays to communicate status and settings. Drivers who misinterpret in-vehicle displays may be more likely to misuse or avoid using ADAS, negating the potential safety benefits. A novel evaluation method is proposed and applied to the (at the time of surveying) latest Volvo instrument cluster. An online survey was completed by 838 Volvo car owners with varying levels of familiarity with adaptive cruise control and pilot assist. Results suggest that the concepts of a system being “available but not on” or “on but not actively providing support” can be difficult for novice users to recognize, resulting in a mode or state confusion. However, more experienced users were less likely to make these types of errors. The assessment method of providing users with partially masked images shows promise as a useful tool for evaluating comprehension of ADAS in-vehicle visual displays.

As cars become more and more quiet the sound quality of rotary components such as car compressor becomes more important in the customer’s subjective perception of passenger car quality. This needs a new evaluation method which is not only the traditional method like sound pressure level but also Psychoacoustic Metrics to focus the specification of component sounds. This paper on one hand analyzed one car’s abnormal noise reason through the tests, found the main problem frequency band of the compressor, and on the other hand studied the compressor’s psychoacoustic metrics. In this paper the countermeasure of solving this problem was also given, and then noise level and psychoacoustic parameters are compared. Both objective evaluation and subjective evaluation showed that the compressor with the solution not only reduced the sound pressure level, but also improved the car sound quality greatly.

Abstract Although ride comfort has been researched for many years, there is still no definite objective evaluation method which can match the subjective assessment feeling well. The mainly presented approaches are mostly based on ISO 2631, but the consistency and correlation between subjective evaluation and objective evaluation are inadequate in these studies. Taking the motion control as the study content, which is primary ride comfort. Different type components of vehicle have been combined in a tuning car to achieve various ride performance, such as springs, dampers, jounce bumpers and tires. Then corresponding subjective evaluation results and acceleration measurement data have been collected when driving the tuning car on a sine wave road. With correlation and clustering analysis, the most representative features of measurement data for subjective assessment were extracted. Based on the small-sample statics theory, a new objective evaluation method for ride motion control has been established using the features by the LASSO model. The cross validation and comparison results indicate that the new objective evaluation method has a good estimation for ride motion control and the method can be a complement for ISO 2631.

Abstract Replacement gilt feet and leg conformation traits are subjectively evaluated at early ages (150 d) in order to select acceptable replacements. The objectives of this study were to: 1) evaluate replacement gilt feet and leg conformation (FLC) using subjective and objective measurement methods, 2) estimate objective joint angle changes over two parities, and 3) evaluate the effect of three diets differing in standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine concentrations on FLC traits using the objective evaluation method. Crossbred Large White × Landrace gilts (n = 641) were used. Gilts were moved to GDU at 77 days-of-age and randomly allotted to three ad libitum fed dietary treatments providing similar ME but differing in SID lysine concentrations (low, medium, and high) during the grow-finisher period. All animals received common gestation and lactation diets. Feet and leg conformation traits were evaluated at 100 d, 200 d, 1st litter (392 ± 25 d) and 2nd litter (548 ± 49 d) weaning events. Subjective evaluation was done on a scale from 1 to 5. Data were analyzed using mixed linear model methods. The majority of gilts received the intermediate score (i.e. 3) when joint angles were subjectively evaluated. No differences (P ≥ 0.05) were observed for knee, front pastern and hock objective joint angles between subjective scores assigned. Differences in subjectively evaluated rear pastern (P < 0.05) were observed, where objective joint angles associated with scores of ≤ 2 and 3 were lower than score of ≥ 4. There was no interaction between dietary treatment and objective evaluation time-period for any FLC traits studied (P > 0.05). Females with greater knee, hock, front and rear pastern objective joint angles at 100 d of age, continued to have greater joint angles (0.2 ± 0.04 degrees; P < 0.001) later in life. Front and rear pastern joint angles decreased (P < 0.001) and hock joint angles increased from 100 d to end of study (P < 0.001).

For the nine characteristic factors of tobacco leaf grading standards have different degree of influence on final grading results and lack of objective evaluation method, in this paper, we applied the gray relational analysis method to determine the weight of tobacco leaf factors in every grade, which calculate the gray relational analysis of nine characteristic factors: such as hue, lightness value, chroma, length, leaf structure, waste, oil, maturity and body. The gray relation was normalized to get the weight of the nine factors in tobacco leaf classification. By contrasted with the subjective evaluation of five experts in tobacco field, the calculation results are basically consistent with the experts’ recommendation. It illustrates that the application of Grey relational method to calculate influence ability of flue-cured tobacco grading factors is feasible. This method eliminates the subjectivity of the weight of each factor and can make the results more realistic.
