Ductile Rupture Pressure Prediction for Capped-Open Casing and Tubing Under Combined Loads

Casing and tubing is widely used as protective conduits during all the phases of operations and productions for the oil and gas industry. Recently, casing and tubing burst failure accidents often take place in high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) oil and gas wells during production. Therefore, it is very important to accurately predict casing and tubing bust strength in the casing and tubing design and operation process. PD CEN ISO-TR 10400 presents the ductile rupture model for capped-end conditions, but capped-end casing and tubing applied in oil fields is few. For this case, this document establishes the ductile rupture model for capped-open conditions under combined loads on the base of PD CEN ISO-TR 10400. Numerical and experimental comparisons show that the ductile rupture model for capped-open conditions under combined loads prediction values essentially coincides with burst data provided by PD CEN ISO-TR 10400.

In the recent years, due to the introduction of new Technical Regulations in the Oil and Gas Industry in 2008, high technical and environmental performance values were set to be met by production volume and by the quality of hydrocarbons and a variety of oil products coming from the fields to factory processing and trade parks. The presence of a powerful raw material base, the shortage of petroleum products and the development of market relations create objective conditions for increased use of a variety of natural hydrocarbons, for improved technological schemes of oil preparation and oil processing on the oil fields and for modernizing the equipment used. On small and remote oil fields, which for economic reasons cannot be linked by transport pipelines, a complex system of preparation of liquid hydrocarbons is used with the ultimate goal of obtaining some refined products such as gasoline, diesel fuel and furnace oil.

This article, written by JPT Technology Editor Judy Feder, contains highlights of paper SPE 203461, “Digitalization in the Oil and Gas Industry—A Case Study of a Fully Smart Field in the United Arab Emirates,” by Muhammad Arif and Abdulla Mohammed Al Senani, ADNOC, prepared for the 2020 Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference, Abu Dhabi, held virtually from 9–12 November. The paper has not been peer reviewed. One of the first oil fields in the UAE to be fully operated remotely is in the southeast region, 250 km from Abu Dhabi. The complete paper discusses the development and commissioning of the field, which is the first smart field for ADNOC Onshore. The designed and applied technology facilitated unmanned operation of the field from downhole to export. Introduction Oilfield digitalization encompasses gathering real-time and non-real-time data from wells, flow lines, manifolds, stations, and water injection facilities; analysis of the data using algorithms, flowcharts, plots, and reports; and user access to this data on user-friendly screens. This allows engineers to focus on interpretation of data vs. searching, organizing, and formatting the data. In the bigger picture, the data collected will lead to conclusions and set bases for important decisions for similar projects in the future, enabling a lesson-learning approach to design new oil fields. The accumulated theoretical and practical research results of smart-field implementation require analysis and synthesis to maintain perspective of the entire project. Both were applied in the Mender field, which is the subject of the complete paper. Problem Statement The Mender parent field has been producing since 2013 with minimal digitalization for wellheads. Wells are not fit-ted with remote sensors, and operators have been visiting the wells to collect data using analog gauges. Collected data are stored in computers or as hard copies. Some critical data is lost, which affects decision-making. The new Mender field is 50 km from the parent field and is in a sensitive area close to international borders. The field area is a wildlife reserve for various endangered animals. The nature of operations is highly critical because of concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) that could jeopardize employees’ health and safety.

<em>The implementation of the Gross Split PSC in the upstream oil and gas industry in Indonesia has been running since 2017 with the hope of being able to accelerate the decision-making process and increase attractiveness for oil and gas investors. This study is to analyze the implementation of Indonesia Gross Split PSC compared to other fiscal terms in Southeast Asia region from an economics perspective. The comparisons reviewed are between Indonesia Gross Split PSC and the following fiscal terms: Indonesia Cost Recovery PSC, Malaysia R/C PSC, Thailand Concession, and Vietnam PSC. Fields used as input for analysis are producing oil fields with small-scale recoverable reserves according to RF-2005 / SPE, namely Block X (early production fields) and Block Y (terminated fields). From economics calculations and comparisons, sensitivity and profitability characteristics, specifically applied to the field conditions under review, it is concluded that Indonesia Gross Split PSC has improved economics indicators compared to Indonesia Cost Recovery PSC so that Indonesia Gross Split PSC has an economics level indicator that is better than PSC Indonesia Cost Recovery when compared to Malaysian R/C PSC, Thailand Concession and Vietnam PSC.</em>

Metal-carbon nanocomposites have been investigated as additives to enhance the protective effect of corrosion inhibitors. Two inhibitors were used as corrosion inhibitors. Inhibitor VNH-L-113 (1-morpholinomethylcyclohexylamine) belongs to Schiff bases, which are known as corrosion inhibitors in neutral and acidic media. Inhibitor SNPKh-1004 is often used in the practice of corrosion protection in the oil and gas industry. For research, an electrochemical method was applied using corrosion rate meters of the Monicor type. Neutral aqueous solution and water simulating the corrosive environment of oil fields were chosen as corrosive media. The result shows, that the copper-carbon nanocomposite enhances the protective effect of corrosion inhibitors of various chemical nature in various corrosive environments. The studies carried out make it possible to consider the use of metal-carbon nanocomposites as a promising direction for increasing the effectiveness of inhibitors in the oil and gas industry.

Abstract The oil and gas industry in Nigeria is undergoing rapid change and explosive growth especially for marginal oil fields. Marginal oil fields operators are indigenous companies with limited profitability and some operators embrace outsourcing in their operations. Furthermore, outsourcing is process in which a company contract with another company to manage service that it does not want to provide by itself. The study examined the effect of outsourcing on marginal field operations. Using literature review and case study in India, Egypt and Malaysia by marginal field operators it is observed that outsourcing has positively contributed to delivery of marginal field project. Outsourcing is beneficial because it allows companies to reduce their fixed asset costs. Outsourcing in form of alliance between indigenous and foreign companies would enhance the credibility of the indigenous companies and stimulate capacity building in terms of knowledge and technology transfer. It is recommended that for effective outsourcing there should be a clear legal frame work.

The discovery of oil fields in deepwater over the last decades led the oil and gas industry to the necessity of replacing the steel wire cables of the mooring systems of offshore platforms by polymeric ropes. These systems must be designed to work for at least 20 years without showing substantial loss in tensile strength or in their mechanical behavior along this period. However, some polymers present degradation by seawater through the process of hydrolysis, and the question whether it affects significantly the materials’ ultimate tensile strength arises. Accelerated hydrolysis tests were conducted in yarn samples of aramid at high temperature in order to use the Arrhenius correlation to predict their lifetime under service conditions. In order to decouple the total degradation into a thermal and a purely hydrolytic part, separate aging experiments were performed into a dry chamber and the conclusion was that thermal degradation does not play a significant role in the total degradation of aramid due to the water submersion at the temperatures tested.

Federal tax revenues from the main sectors of the Russian economy after the 1998 crisis are examined in the article. Authors present the structure of revenues from these sectors by main taxes for 1999-2003 and prospects for 2004. Emphasis is given to an increasing dependence of budget on revenues from oil and gas industries. The share of proceeds from these sectors has reached 1/3 of total federal revenues. To explain this fact world oil prices dynamics and changes in tax legislation in Russia are considered. Empirical results show strong dependence of budget revenues on oil prices. The analysis of changes in tax legislation in oil and gas industry shows that the government has managed to redistribute resource rent in favor of the state.
