Characterization of Flow Structures in a Diesel Injector for Different Needle Lifts and a Fluctuating Injection Pressure

This paper aims at analyzing the needle lift's influence on the internal flow of single-hole diesel injector to identify flow structures. A numerical Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) model of a single-hole diesel injector was developed and validated to study the flow's dynamic for different needle's lifts and subjected to realistic injection pressure. The main findings are: (1) under steady injection pressure, flow coefficients reached a steady-state value and maximum injected fuel mass flow rate is reached at intermediate needle's lifts. (2) The sac volume is the area with several vortex structures due to the throttling between the needle body and the injector body. (3) The frequency of the fluctuating injection pressure can excite the initial jet entering the sac volume similarly to the Coanda effect. Finally, using a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) allowed extracting coherent structures within the sac volume and putting in evidence a reorganization of the flow.

This study discusses a general framework to identify the unsteady features of a flow past an oscillating aerofoil in deep dynamic stall conditions. In particular, the work aims at demonstrating the advantages for the design process of the Spectral Proper Orthogonal Decomposition in accurately producing reliable reduced models of CFD systems and comparing this technique with standard snapshot-based models. Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes system of equations, coupled with k−ω SST turbulence model, is used to produce the dataset, the latter consisting of a two-dimensional NACA 0012 aerofoil in the pitching motion. Modal analysis is performed on both velocity and pressure fields showing that, for vectored values, a proper tuning of the filtering process allows for better results compared to snapshot formulations and extract highly correlated coherent flow structures otherwise undetected. Wider filters, in particular, produce enhanced coherence without affecting the typical frequency response of the coupled modes. Conversely, the pressure field decomposition is drastically affected by the windowing properties. In conclusion, the low-order spectral reconstruction of the pressure field allows for an excellent prediction of aerodynamic loads. Moreover, the analysis shows that snapshot-based models better perform on the CFD values during the pitching cycle, while spectral-based methods better fit the loads’ fluctuations.

The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is the prevailing method for basis generation in the model reduction of fluids. A serious limitation of this method, however, is that it is empirical. In other words, this basis accurately represents the flow data used to generate it, but may not be accurate when applied ‘off-design’. Thus, the reduced-order model may lose accuracy for flow parameters (e.g. Reynolds number, initial or boundary conditions and forcing parameters) different from those used to generate the POD basis and generally does. This paper investigates the use of sensitivity analysis in the basis selection step to partially address this limitation. We examine two strategies that use the sensitivity of the POD modes with respect to the problem parameters. Numerical experiments performed on the flow past a square cylinder over a range of Reynolds numbers demonstrate the effectiveness of these strategies. The newly derived bases allow for a more accurate representation of the flows when exploring the parameter space. Expanding the POD basis built at one state with its sensitivity leads to low-dimensional dynamical systems having attractors that approximate fairly well the attractor of the full-order Navier–Stokes equations for large parameter changes.

This paper investigates an isothermal free water jet discharging horizontally from a circular nozzle (9mm) into a stationary body of water. The jet exit velocity was 2.5m∕s and the exit Reynolds number was 22,500. The large-scale structures in the far field were investigated by performing a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis of the velocity field obtained using a particle image velocimetry system. The number of modes used for the POD reconstruction of the velocity fields was selected to recover 40% of the turbulent kinetic energy. A vortex identification algorithm was then employed to quantify the size, circulation, and direction of rotation of the exposed vortices. A statistical analysis of the distribution of number, size, and strength of the identified vortices was carried out to explore the characteristics of the coherent structures. The results clearly reveal that a substantial number of vortical structures of both rotational directions exist in the far-field region of the jet. The number of vortices decreases in the axial direction, while their size increases. The mean circulation magnitude is preserved in the axial direction. The results also indicate that the circulation magnitude is directly proportional to the square of the vortex radius and the constant of proportionality is a function of the axial location.
