Study of Maneuverability of Container Ship With Nonlinear and Roll-Coupled Effects by Numerical Simulations Using RANSE-Based Solver

The examination of maneuvering qualities of a ship is necessary to ensure its navigational safety and prediction of trajectory. The study of maneuverability of a ship is a three-step process, which involves selection of a suitable mathematical model, estimation of the hydrodynamic derivatives occurring in the equation of motion, and simulation of the standard maneuvering tests to determine its maneuvering qualities. This paper reports the maneuvering studies made on a container ship model (S175). The mathematical model proposed by Son and Nomoto (1981, “On Coupled Motion of Steering and Rolling of a High Speed Container Ship,” J. Soc. Nav. Arch. Jpn., 150, pp. 73–83) suitable for the nonlinear roll-coupled steering model for high-speed container ships is considered here. The hydrodynamic derivatives are determined by numerically simulating the planar motion mechanism (PMM) tests in pure yaw and combined sway–yaw mode using an Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes Equations (RANSE)-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver. The tests are repeated with the model inclined at different heel angles to obtain the roll-coupled derivatives. Standard definitive maneuvers like turning tests at rudder angle, 35 deg and 20 deg/20 deg zig-zag maneuvers are simulated using the numerically obtained derivatives and are compared with those obtained using experimental values.

The recruitment of leukocytes and subsequent rolling, activation, adhesion and transmigration are essential stages of an inflammatory response. Chronic inflammation may entail atherosclerosis, one of the most devastating cardiovascular diseases. Understanding this mechanism is of crucial importance in immunology and in the development of anti-inflammatory drugs. Micropipette aspiration experiments show that leukocytes behave as viscoelastic drops during suction. The flow of non-Newtonian viscoelastic fluids can be described by differential, integral and rate-type constitutive equations. In this study, the rate-type Oldroyd-B model is used to capture the viscoelasticity of the leukocyte which is considered as a drop. Our main goal is to analyze a mathematical model describing the deformation and flow of an individual leukocyte in a microchannel flow. In this model we consider a coupled problem between a simplified Oldroyd-B system and a transport equation which describes the density considered as non constant in the Navier–Stokes equations. First we present the mathematical model and we prove the existence of solution, then we describe its numerical approximation using the level set method. Through the numerical simulations we analyze the hemodynamic effects of three inlet velocity values. We note that the hydrodynamic forces pushing the cell become higher with increasing inlet velocities.

A spool valve of aerospace hydraulic breaks down because of uneven pressure distribution between sleeve and spool, which is called as hydraulic lock. The rectangular grooves on the spool surface can effectively weaken the lateral force, thereby preventing the hydraulic lock. So the mathematical model of spool valve with rectangular grooves is established according to the Navier-Stokes equations based on the cylindrical coordinate system. To verify the effectivity of the mathematical model, the numerical simulation is compared and used to modified the mathematical model.

Water wave overwash of a step by small steepness, regular incident waves is analysed using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model and a mathematical model, in two spatial dimensions. The CFD model is based on the two-phase, incompressible Navier–Stokes equations, and the mathematical model is based on the coupled potential-flow and nonlinear shallow-water theories. The CFD model is shown to predict vortices, breaking and overturning in the region where overwash is generated, and that the overwash develops into fast-travelling bores. The mathematical model is shown to predict bore heights and velocities that agree with the CFD model, despite neglecting the complicated dynamics where the overwash is generated. Evidence is provided to explain the agreement in terms of the underlying agreement of mass and energy fluxes.

For a clear and comprehensive opinion on segregated SIMPLE algorithm in the area of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) during liquid processing of materials, the most significant developments on the SIMPLE algorithm and its variants are briefly reviewed. Subsequently, some important advances during last 30 years serving as increasing numerical accuracy, enhancing robustness and improving efficiency for Navier–Stokes (N-S) equations of incompressible fluid flow are summarized. And then a so-called Direct-SIMPLE scheme proposed by the authors of present paper introduced, which is different from SIMPLE-like schemes, no iterative computations are needed to achieve the final pressure and velocity corrections. Based on the facts cited in present paper, it conclude that the SIMPLE algorithm and its variants will continue to evolve aimed at convergence and accuracy of solution by improving and combining various methods with different grid techniques, and all the algorithms mentioned above will enjoy widespread use in the future.

Hydraulic structures are often complex and in many cases their designs require attention so that the flow behavior around hydraulic structures and their influence on the environment can be predicted accurately. Currently, more efficient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes can solve the Navier–Stokes equations in three-dimensions and free surface computation in a significantly improved manner. CFD has evolved into a powerful tool in simulating fluid flows. In addition, CFD with its advantages of lower cost and greater flexibility can reasonably predict the mean characteristics of flows such as velocity distributions, pressure distributions, and water surface profiles of complex problems in hydraulic engineering. In Ethiopia, Tendaho Dam Spillway was constructed recently, and one flood passed over the spillway. Although the flood was below the designed capacity, there was an overflow due to superelevation at the bend. Therefore, design of complex hydraulic structures using the state-of- art of 3D hydrodynamic modelling enhances the safety of the structures. 3D hydrodynamic modelling was used to verify the safety of the spillway using designed data and the result showed that the constructed hydraulic section is not safe unless it is modified.

Ski jump spillways are frequently implemented to dissipate energy from high-speed flows. The general feature of this structure is to transform the spillway flow into a free jet up to a location where the impact of the jet creates a plunge pool, representing an area for potential erosion phenomena. In the present investigation, several tests with different ski jump bucket angles are executed numerically by means of the OpenFOAM® digital library, taking advantage of the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations (RANS) approach. The results are compared to those obtained experimentally by other authors as related to the jet length and shape, obtaining physical insights into the jet characteristics. Particular attention is given to the maximum pressure head at the tailwater. Simple equations are proposed to predict the maximum dynamic pressure head acting on the tailwater, as dependent upon the Froude number, and the maximum pressure head on the bucket. Results of this study provide useful suggestions for the design of ski jump spillways in dam construction.

The application of two-phase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for simulating crater-like Taylor cone formation dynamics in a viscous liquid is a challenging task. An interface coupled level set/volume-of-fluid (CLSVOF) method and the governing equations based on Navier-Stokes equations were employed to simulate the crater-like Taylor cone formation process. The computational results of the dynamics of crater-like Taylor cone slowly formed on a free liquid surface produced by a submerged nozzle in a viscous liquid were presented in this paper. Some experiments with different air pressures were carried out to evaluate the simulation results. The results from both CFD and experimental observations were compared and analyzed. The numerical results were consistent with the experimental results. Our study showed that the CLSVOF method gave convincing results, and the computational method is robust to extreme variations in interfacial topology.

In this paper numerical simulations were conducted to analyze the effects of design parameters and distribution of balancing-hole on the axial-force of a partial emission pump. The studied pump is a single stage pump with a Barske style impeller. Based on the original impeller, we designed 7 pumps with different balancing-hole diameters and the partial emission pump equipped with different impellers were simulated employing the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software Fluent 12.1 to solve the Navier-Stokes equations for three-dimensional steady flow. A sensitivity analysis of the numerical model was performed with the purpose of balancing the contradiction of numerical accuracy and the cost of calculation. The results showed that, with increasing of the capacity, the axial force varies little. The diameter of the inner balancing-hole plays a dominant role of reducing axial-force of partial emission pump, the axial-force decreases with increasing of inner balancing-hole diameter on the whole range of operation, the axial-force of impeller without inner balancing-hole is approximately 3 times larger than that of impeller with inner balancing-hole. While the diameter of outer balancing-hole has a reverse effects compared with that of inner balancing-hole. With increasing of outer balancing-hole, the axial force increases accordingly.

The main goal of the present work is to analyse the numerical simulation of a centrifugal pump by solving Navier-Stokes equations, coupled with the ‘standard k-∊’ turbulence model. The pump consists of an impeller having five curved blades with nine diffuser vanes. The shaft rotates at 890r/min. Flow characteristics are assumed to be stalled in the appropriate region of flowrate levels of 1.31-2.861/s. Numerical analysis techniques are performed on a commercial FLUENT package program assuming steady, incompressible flow conditions with decreasing flowrate. Under stall conditions the flow in the diffuser passage alternates between outward jetting when the low-pass-filtered pressure is high to a reverse flow when the filtered pressure is low. Being below design conditions, there is a consistent high-speed leakage flow in the gap between the impeller and the diffuser from the exit side of the diffuser to the beginning of the volute. Separation of this leakage flow from the diffuser vane causes the onset of stall. As the flowrate decreases both the magnitude of the leakage within the vaneless part of the pump and reverse flow within a stalled diffuser passage increase. As this occurs, the stall-cell size extends from one to two diffuser passages. Comparisons are made with experimental data and show good agreement.

A pressure-based finite volume procedure developed previously for incompressible flows is extended to predict the three-dimensional compressible flow within a centrifugal impeller. In this procedure, the general curvilinear coordinate system is used and the collocated grid arrangement is adopted. Mass-averaging is used to close the instantaneous Navier-Stokes equations. The covariant velocity components are used as the main variables for the momentum equations, making the pressure-velocity coupling easier. The procedure is successfully applied to predict various compressible flows from subsonic to supersonic. With the aid of the k-ɛ turbulence model, the flow details within a centrifugal impeller are obtained using the present procedure. Predicted distributions of the meridional velocity and the static pressure are reasonable. Calculated radial velocities and flow angles are favourably compared with the measurements at the exit of the impeller.
