Contact mechanics in wrapping a thin-shell (tape/web) around a grooved cylindrical surface (roller) under tension is investigated. The problem is analyzed along the axial direction of the roller, and the effects of wrap-angle tape/web motion are neglected. Equations of equilibrium admit analytical solutions, but the problem is nonlinear due to the unknown nature of contact area. The tape bends into the grooves and makes contact over the lands. Three distinct contact states describe the interaction of the tape/web with respect to the lands. Nondimensional analysis shows that contact state depends on the width of the groove and the land, and the nondimensional belt-wrap pressure only modulates the amplitude of the deflected profile.

A contact model using semi-analytical methods, relying on elementary analytical solutions, has been developed. It is based on numerical techniques adapted to contact mechanics, with strong potential for inelastic, inhomogeneous or anisotropic materials. Recent developments aim to quantify displacements and stresses of an anisotropic material contacting both an isotropic or anisotropic material. The influence of symmetry axes on the contact solution will be more specifically analyzed.

The basic aim in this work is to present a new technique to analyze the contact surfaces developed by the contact between the tires and the structural pavements by numerical simulations, using 3D finite element formulations with contact mechanics. For this purpose, the Augmented Lagrangian method is used. This study is performed just putting the tires on the structural pavement. These tires and the structural pavement are discretized by finite elements under large 3D elastoplastic deformation. The real loads (of aircrafts, trucks or cars) are applied directly on each tire and by contact mechanics procedures, the real contact area between the tires and the pavement surface is computed. The penetration conditions and the contact interfaces are investigated in details. Furthermore, the pressure developed at the contact surfaces is automatically calculated and transferred to the structural pavement by contact mechanics techniques. The purpose of this work research is to show that the contact area is not circular and the finite element techniques can calculate automatically the real contact area, the real geometry and its stresses and strains. In the end of this work, numerical results in terms of geometry, stress and strain are presented and compared to show the ability of the algorithm. These numerical results are also compared with the numerical results obtained by the commercial program ANSYS.

In the present paper, we have introduced a new model of gravastar with an isotropic matter distribution in Rastall gravity by the Mazur–Mottola (2004) mechanism. Mazur–Mottola approach is about the construction of gravastar which is predicted as an alternative to black hole. By following this convention, we define gravastar in the form of three phases. The first one is an interior phase which has negative density; the second part consists of thin shell comprising ultrarelativistic stiff fluid for which we have discussed the length, energy, and entropy. By the graphical analysis of entropy, we have shown that our proposed thin shell gravastar model is potentially stable. The third phase of gravastar is defined by the exterior Schwarzschild geometry. For the interior of gravastar, we have found the analytical solutions free from any singularity and the event horizon in the framework of Rastall gravity.

Category: Ankle Introduction/Purpose: Acute inversion ankle sprains are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries. Higher grade sprains, which include anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) injury, can be particularly problematic and often require surgical repair. The implications of CFL injury on ankle instability are unclear. We aim to evaluate the impact of CFL injury on ankle stability and subtalar joint biomechanics. We hypothesized that CFL injury will result in decreased stiffness and torque, and alteration of ankle contact mechanics compared to the uninjured ankle in a cadaveric model. Methods: Twenty matched cadaveric ankles dissected of skin and subcutaneous tissue were mounted to an Instron with 20° of ankle plantar flexion and 15° of internal rotation. Intact specimens were axially loaded to body weight, then underwent inversion stress along the anatomic axis of the ankle from 0 to 20° (simulating inversion injury) for three cycles. ATFL and CFL were sequentially sectioned, and inversion testing repeated for each condition. Stiffness and change in torque were recorded using an Instron, and pressure and contact area were recorded using a calibrated Tekscan sensor system. Inversion angle of the talus and calcaneus relative to the ankle mortise were recorded using a three-dimensional motion capture system. Paired t tests were performed for inter and intra-group comparisons. Results: Stiffness and torque did not significantly decrease after sectioning of the ATFL, but did decreased significantly after sectioning of CFL. Peak pressures in the tibiotalar joint decreased significantly following CFL release compared to both the uninjured ankle and ATFL-only release. Mean contact area significantly increased following CFL release compared to both the uninjured ankle and ATFL release. There was a concentration of force in the anteromedial ankle joint during weight-bearing inversion. However, the center-of-force shifts 1.22 mm posteromedial after CFL release relative to an intact ankle. Motion capture showed a significant and sequential increase in inversion angle of both the calcaneus and talus, after release of each ligament. There was significantly more inversion in the subtalar joint than the tibiotalar joint with weight-bearing inversion. Conclusion: There is significantly lower stiffness and torque with weight-bearing inversion of the ankle joint complex following injury to both ATFL and CFL, and sequentially greater inversion of the talus and calcaneus with progressive ligament injury. This corresponds to a significant shift in the center of force in the tibiotalar joint. CFL contributes considerably to lateral ankle stability, and sprains that include CFL injury result in substantial alteration of contact mechanics at the ankle and subtalar joints. Repair of CFL may be beneficial during lateral ligament reconstruction, potentially mitigating long-term consequences (e.g., articular damage) of a loose or incompetent CFL.

The contact mechanics in ceramic-on-ceramic hip implants are investigated in this study under the microseparation condition where the edge contact occurs between the superolateral rim of the acetabular cup and the femoral head. A three-dimensional finite element model is developed to examine the effect of the microseparation distance between the femoral head and the acetabular cup on the contact area and contact stresses between the bearing surfaces. It is shown that microseparation leads to edge contact and elevated contact stresses, and these are mainly dependent on the magnitude of separation, the radial clearance between the femoral head and the acetabular cup, and the cup inclination angle. For a small microseparation distance (less than the diametrical clearance), the contact occurs within the acetabular cup, and consequently an excellent agreement of the predicted contact pressure distribution is obtained between the present three-dimensional anatomical model and a simple two-dimensional axisymmetric model adopted in a previous study [5]. However, as microsegregation is increased further, edge contact between the superolateral rim and the femoral head occurs. Consequently, the predicted contact pressure is significantly increased. The corresponding contact area resembles closely the stripe wear pattern observed on both clinically retrieved and simulator-tested ceramic femoral heads [8, 9, 11]. Furthermore, introducing a fillet radius of 2.5 mm at the mouth of the acetabular cup is shown to reduce the contact stress due to edge contact, but only under relatively large microseparation distances.

Abstract Nonanatomic placement of posteromedial meniscal root repairs alters knee mechanics; however, little is known about how the position and magnitude of misplacement affect knee mechanics. Finite element knee models were developed to assess changes in cartilage and meniscus mechanics for anatomic and various nonanatomic repairs with respect to intact. In total, 25 different repair locations were assessed at loads of 500 N and 1000 N. The two-simple-suture method was represented within the models to simulate posteromedial meniscal root repairs. Anatomic repairs nearly restored total contact area; however, meniscal hoop stress decreased, meniscal extrusion increased, and cartilage–cartilage contact area increased. Repairs positioned further posterior altered knee mechanics the most and repairs positioned further anterior restored knee mechanics for posteromedial root repairs. Despite this, repair tension increased with further anterior placement. Anterior placement of repairs results in more restorative contact mechanics than posterior placement; however, anterior placement also increased the risk of suture cut-out or failure following repairs. Anatomic placement of repairs remains the best option because of the risks involved with anterior placement; however, suture methods need to be improved to better restore the strength of repairs to that of the native insertion. Proper placement of repairs is important to consider with meniscal root repairs because misplacement may negatively affect cartilage and meniscus mechanics in patients.

Contact problem of the frictionless indentation of elastic half-space by smooth rigid punch of curved profile is investigated. An exact expression of the contact pressure distribution for a curved profile punch in terms of integral involving the pressure distribution for sequence of flat punches is derived. The method is illustrated and validated by comparison with some well-known analytical solutions.
