On the Observability and the Observer Design of Differential Pneumatic Pistons

In this paper, an observability analysis for differential pneumatic pistons is presented, together with the design and implementation of linear observers of the Luenberger type. To avoid as much as possible the knowledge of the system model parameters, the generalized proportional integral (GPI) approach is employed for the estimation of unmeasured variables. Experimental results show the good performance of the proposed scheme.

The main goal of the research is to design a low-cost, performing quadrotor unmaned aerial vehicle (UAV) system. Because of low cost limits, the performance must be ensured by other ways. The present proposal is a quaternion-based estimator used in the control loop. In order to make the proposed solution easy to be reproduced by the reader, step-by-step instructions are given, including component choices, design, and implementation. Throughout the article, detailed description of the system model is given. The efficacy of the suggested quaternion-based predictive control is evaluated by extended experimental results.

In this work measurements of mean holdup of dispersed phase, of axial holdup profiles and of flooding points in a reciprocating plate contactor with both the VPE-type plates and the sieve plates were carried out. The experimental results were compared with a monodisperse model of steady-state column hydrodynamics and the model parameters were evaluated. Important differences in the behaviour of the two plate types could be identified. Comparison was also made between two reciprocating drives of different pulse form.

A model is developed for the prediction of river flows resulting from combined snowmelt and precipitation. The model employs a Kalman filter to reflect uncertainty both in the measured data and in the system model parameters. The forecasting algorithm is used to develop multi-day forecasts for the Sturgeon River, Ontario. The algorithm is shown to develop good 1-day and 2-day ahead forecasts, but the linear prediction model is found inadequate for longer-term forecasts. Good initial parameter estimates are shown to be essential for optimal forecasting performance. Key words: Kalman filter, streamflow forecast, multi-day, streamflow, Sturgeon River, MISP algorithm.

This paper deals with the problem of braking process modeling. A subway train braking process simulation software is built, which composes of a GUI and a underlying model. The underlying model consists of a train model and a brake system model. The train model is simplified and built by assembling subcomponent element models of a railway vehicle. The brake system model is simplified and built based on experimental data in order to reduce computational effort. The GUI of the software can be use to input model parameters, display simulation results, and store simulation data. As a result of the simplifications of the modeling process, the developed software can perform real time simulation.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the characterization of moisture diffusion inside early-age concrete slabs subjected to curing. Time-dependent relative humidity (RH) distributions of three mixture proportions subjected to three different curing methods (i.e., air curing, water curing, and membrane-forming compounds curing) and sealed condition were measured for 28 days. A one-dimensional nonlinear moisture diffusion partial differential equation (PDE) based on Fick’s second law, which incorporates the effect of curing in the Dirichlet boundary condition using a concept of curing factor, is developed to simulate the diffusion process. Model parameters are calibrated by a genetic algorithm (GA). Experimental results show that the RH reducing rate inside concrete under air curing is greater than the rates under membrane-forming compound curing and water curing. It is shown that the effect of water-to-cement (w/c) ratio on self-desiccation is significant. Lower w/c ratio tends to result in larger RH reduction. RH reduction considering both effect of diffusion and self-desiccation in early-age concrete is not sensitive to w/c ratio, but to curing method. Comparison between model simulation and experimental results indicates that the improved model is able to reflect the effect of curing on moisture diffusion in early-age concrete slabs.

In order to better solve the problem of detection of small bone spurs with convenient and accurate way, a portable spur detection system is designed. This system, in view of spur reproducibility characteristic, is characterized by the application for a kind of the improved algorithm based on the OpenCV. And it was successfully transplanted into the embedded system. The experimental results indicated that this system might precisely examine the small spur with difficulty discovery by naked eyes used fully by two images of computed tomography which done in different periods. The spur detection system needs to be further improved function to realize more applications. In fact, function expansion based on the system is easy to realize.

The article deals with the problem of state observer design for a linear time-varying plant. To solve this problem, a number of realistic assumptions are considered, assuming that the model parameters are polynomial functions of time with unknown coefficients. The problem of observer design is solved in the class of identification approaches, which provide transformation of the original mathematical model of the plant to a static linear regression equation, in which, instead of unknown constant parameters, there are state variables of generators that model non-stationary parameters. To recover the unknown functions of the regression model, we use the recently well-established method of dynamic regressor extension and mixing (DREM), which allows to obtain monotone estimates, as well as to accelerate the convergence of estimates to the true values. Despite the fact that the article deals with the problem of state observer design, it is worth noting the possibility of using the proposed approach to solve an independent and actual estimation problem of unknown time-varying parameters.
