Tip Clearance Effects on Aero-elastic Stability of Axial Compressor Blades

The tip clearance effects on aero-elastic stability of axial compressor blades are investigated with two independent three-dimensional (3D) flutter prediction approaches: energy method and aero-elastic eigenvalue analysis. An axial compressor rotor which has encountered broken fault caused by flutter during the test rig and flight has been analyzed for five tip gap configurations. A consistent conclusion obtained by these two independent approaches shows the variation trend of aerodynamic damping is not monotonic, but aerodynamic damping at the least stable case shows a trend of first decrease and then increase with the rising of tip gap size, which is different from the results of other researchers and can be utilized to understand the conflict between the conclusions of different research work. Apart from the results of tip clearance effects on aero-elastic stability, the employed two methods have revealed the key factors involved in the flutter occurrence from a different perspective.

This study aimed to enhance the understanding of flow phenomena in low-reaction aspirated compressors. Three-dimensional, multi-passage steady and unsteady numerical simulations are performed to investigate the performance sensitivity to tip clearance variation on the first-stage rotor of a multistage low-reaction aspirated compressor. Three kinds of tip clearance sizes including 1.0τ, 2.0τ and 3.0τ are modeled, in which 1.0τ corresponds to the designed tip clearance size of 0.2 mm. The steady numerical simulations show that the overall performance of the rotor moves toward lower mass flow rate when the tip clearance size is increased. Moreover, energy losses, efficiency reduction and stall margin decrease are also observed with increasing tip clearance size. This can be mostly attributed to the damaging impact of intense tip clearance flow. For unsteady simulation, the result shows periodical oscillation of the tip leakage vortex and a “two-passage periodic structure” in the tip region at the near-stall point. The occurrence of the periodical oscillation is due to the severe interaction between the tip clearance flow and the shock wave. However, the rotor operating state is still stable at this working point because a dynamic balance is established between the tip clearance flow and incoming flow.

The accurate characterization and simulation of rotor tip clearance flows has received much attention in recent years due to their impact on compressor-performance and stability. At NASA Glenn the first known three dimensional Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) measurements of the tip region of a low speed compressor rotor have been acquired to characterize the behavior of the rotor tip clearance flow. The measurements were acquired phase-locked to the rotor position so that changes in the tip clearance vortex position relative to the rotor blade can be seen. The DPIV technique allows the magnitude and relative contributions of both the asynchronous motions of a coherent structure and the temporal unsteadiness to be evaluated. Comparison of measurements taken at the peak efficiency and at near stall operating conditions characterizes the mean position of the clearance vortex and the changes in the unsteady behavior of the vortex with blade loading. Comparisons of the 3-D DPIV measurements at the compressor design point to a 3D steady N-S solution are also done to assess the fidelity of steady, single-passage simulations to model an unsteady flow field.

Abstract Flutter is one of the important issues in turbomachinery analysis. There are four common types of flutter, including sub/transonic stall flutter, choke flutter, supersonic stall flutter, and supersonic non-stall flutter. Flutter may occur under many different operating conditions. Therefore, it is important to study the aeroelastic stability of blades when the compressor operates under different conditions. Based on the energy method proposed by Carta [1], this paper studied the aeroelastic stability of the second-stage rotor blade of an axial compressor under different operating conditions. It is found that the aerodynamic damping of the blade under the near-stall operating point of the compressor is negative. Three typical operating points are selected to study the differences in flutter mechanism between different operating conditions. The 90% span section is selected as the reference section to analyze the variation of the aerodynamic work at different operating points. The influence of reduced frequency, modal component, and tip clearance on aerodynamic damping are analyzed under three operating points.

Rotor tip modeling fidelity, grid resolution, and near wall modeling have been examined to determine the requirements for an accurate prediction of the effects of large tip clearance in a low-speed axial compressor rotor. The effort, using a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver, aimed to obtain the most accurate predictions from a three-dimensional, steady, single blade row simulation. A recently tested, modern low speed rotor, was used as the test geometry; the measured pressure rise characteristic as well as detailed data near stall was used to evaluate the ability of different modeling strategies to capture the correct flow structure. The leakage flow was quantified to show that a wide range of tip blockage could be obtained for different simulations of the same geometry and conditions. The results show that using a square tip and gridding to fully resolve the real tip gap was better able to capture the effects of loading on the leakage flow than either of the approximate models studied. Sufficient clustering near the casing to capture the shear layers was also found to be critical. While wall integration provided the best results in simultaneously improving the prediction of pressure rise characteristics and flow range, higher fidelity wall modeling and a casing y+ of approximately 3 were found to provide similar benefits.

A three-dimensional space marching code is used for the numerical modelling of the flow in an isolated axial flow compressor rotor. The rotor is analyzed at four operating points, up to near stall conditions. Numerical results are first validated versus available experimental data and then further exploited in order to illuminate flow patterns in the inter-blade region. The tip leakage impact on the main passage flow and losses level as well as the effect of blade loading on the hub corner stall extent and the radial displacement of the flow are fully detailed. In order to account for the rotor geometry, the modifications performed in an existing software are mainly concerned with the accurate modelling of the clearance which is formed above the curved blade tip; for this purpose, a local H-type mesh is embedded to the main passage grid.

The relationship between turbomachinery blade circulation and tip clearance vortex circulation measured experimentally is examined using three-dimensional viscous flow computations. It is shown that the clearance vortex circulation one would measure is dependent on the placement of the fluid contour around which the circulation measurement is taken. Radial transport of vorticity results in the magnitude of the measured clearance vortex circulation generally being less than the blade circulation. For compressors, radial transport of vorticity shed from the blade tip in proximity to the endwall is the principal contributor to the discrepancy between the measured vortex circulation and blade circulation. Further, diffusion of vorticity shed at the blade tip toward the endwall makes it impossible in most practical cases to construct a fluid contour around the vortex that encloses all, and only, the vorticity shed from the blade tip. One should thus not expect agreement between measured tip clearance vortex circulation and circulation around the blade.

Mechanical constraints dictate the existence of tip clearances in rotating cascades, resulting to a flow leakage through this clearance which considerably influences the efficiency and range of operation of the machine. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solvers are often used for the numerical study of compressor and turbine stages with tip-clearance. The quality of numerical predictions depends strongly on how accurately the blade tip region is modelled; in this respect the accurate modelling of tip region was one of the main goals of this work. In the present paper, a 3-D Navier-Stokes solver is suitably adapted so that the flat tip surface of a blade and its sharp edges could be accurately modelled, in order to improve the precision of the calculation in the tip region. The adapted code solves the fully elliptic, steady, Navier-Stokes equations through a space-marching algorithm and a pressure correction technique; the H-type topology is retained, even in cases with thick leading edges where a special treatment is introduced herein. The analysis is applied to two different cases, a linear cascade and a compressor rotor, and comparisons with experimental data are provided.

An axial compressor end-wall boundary layer theory which requires the introduction of three-dimensional velocity profile models is described. The method is based on pitch-averaged boundary layer equations and contains blade force-defect terms for which a new expression in function of transverse momentum thickness is introduced. In presence of tip clearance a component of the defect force proportional to the clearance over blade height ratio is also introduced. In this way two constants enter the model. It is also shown that all three-dimensional velocity profile models present inherent limitations with regard to the range of boundary layer momentum thicknesses they are able to represent. Therefore a new heuristic velocity profile model is introduced, giving higher flexibility. The end-wall boundary layer calculation allows a correction of the efficiency due to end-wall losses as well as calculation of blockage. The two constants entering the model are calibrated and compared with experimental data allowing a good prediction of overall efficiency including clearance effects and aspect ratio. Besides, the method allows a prediction of radial distribution of velocities and flow angles including the end-wall region and examples are shown compared to experimental data.

Evolution and structure of multiple stall cells with short-length-scale in an axial compressor rotor have been investigated experimentally. In a low-speed research compressor rotor tested, a short-length-scale stall cell appeared at first, but did not grow rapidly in size, unlike a so-called “spike-type stall inception” observed in many multistage compressors. Alternatively, the number of cells increased to a certain stable state (a mild stall state) under a fixed throttle condition. In the mild stall state the multiple stall cells, the size of which was on the same order of the inception cell (a few blade spacings), were rotating at 72 percent of rotor speed and at intervals of 4.8 blade spacings. With further throttling, a long-length-scale wave appeared overlapping the multiple short-length-scale waves, then developed to a deep stall state with a large cell. In order to capture the short-length-scale cells in the mild stall state, a so-called “double phase-locked averaging technique” has been developed, by which the flow field can be measured phase locked to both the rotor and the stall cell rotation. Then, time-dependent ensemble averages of the three-dimensional velocity components upstream and downstream of the rotor have been obtained with a slanted hot-wire, and the pressure distributions on the casing wall with high-response pressure transducers. By a physically plausible explanation for the experimental results, a model for the flow mechanism of the short-length-scale stall cell has been presented. The distinctive feature of the stall cell structure is on the separation vortex bubble with a leg traveling ahead of the rotor, with changing the blade in turn on which the vortex leg stands.
