This paper introduces a new disturbance estimation scheme, and a possible application to relative output stabilization of multiple systems. Using the proposed disturbance estimation scheme, total unknown external disturbance applied to a plant is estimated and compensated. Moreover, the model difference between an actual system and a desired system is also estimated and compensated. For the purpose of general use of the disturbance estimation scheme as an unknown input observer (UIO), a parameterized design method is given, even for the unstable and nonminimum phase systems. For the relative output stabilization of multiple systems, second-order consensus algorithm is additionally used. A case study, simulations, and experimental tests sequentially validate the proposed estimation and control methods.

In this paper, the typical fault estimation and dynamic analysis are presented for a leader-follower unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) formation system with external disturbances. Firstly, a dynamic model with proportional navigation guidance (PNG) control of the UAV formation is built. Then, an intermediate observer design method is adopted to estimate the system states and faults simultaneously. Based on the graph theory, the topology relationship between each node in the UAV formation has been also analyzed. The estimator and the system error have been created. Moreover, the typical faults, including the components failure, airframe damage, communication failure, formation collision, and environmental impact, are also discussed for the UAV system. Based on the fault-tolerant strategy, five familiar fault models are proposed from the perspectives of fault estimation, dynamical disturbances, and formation cooperative control. With an analysis of the results of states and faults estimation, the actuator faults can be estimated precisely with component failure and wind disturbances. Furthermore, the basic dynamic characteristics of the UAV formation are discussed. Besides, a comparison of two cases related to the wind disturbance has been accomplished to verify the performance of the fault estimator and controller. The results illustrate the credibility and applicability of the fault estimation and dynamic control strategies for the UAV system which are proposed in this paper. Finally, an extension about the UAV formation prognostic health management system is expounded from the point of view of the fault-tolerant control, dynamic modeling, and multifault estimation.

This paper presents the analysis methods for design of automotive bumper covers. The bumper covers are plastic structures attached to the front and rear ends of an automobile and are expected to absorb energy in a minor collision. One requirement in design of the bumper covers is to minimize the bumper deflection within a limited range under specific loadings at specific locations based on the design guideline. To investigate the stiffness performance under various loading conditions, a numerical model based on the explicit dynamic finite element analysis (FEA) using the commercial FEA solver, LS-DYNA, is developed to analyze the design. The experimental tests are also carried out to verify the numerical model. The thickness of the bumper cover is a design variable which usually varies from 3 to 4 mm depending on locations. To improve the stiffness of the bumper, an optimal design for the bumper under a pre-defined loading condition is identified by using the topology optimization approach, which is an optimal design method to obtain the optimal layout of an initial design domain under specific boundary conditions. The outcome of this study provides an efficient and cost-effective method to predict and improve the design of automotive bumper covers.

This paper investigates the problem of finite-time [Formula: see text] synchronization for semi-Markov jump Lur’e systems with time-varying delay and external disturbance. The purpose of this work is to design a mode-dependent state-feedback controller to ensure that the synchronization-error system achieves finite-time synchronization with a prescribed [Formula: see text] performance index. A criterion for the finite-time synchronization is proposed by using appropriate Lyapunov functional and two recently developed inequalities. Then, a design method for the required state-feedback controller is presented with the application of several decoupling techniques. Finally, an example is provided to illustrate the applicability of the proposed control method.

Abstract A new method which uses elastic and elasto-plastic Finite Element analyses is developed to design a double breech-block type connector. All relevant criteria proposed by API16F are fulfilled. In addition, plastic and bearing criteria have been added to support the use of lugs for load transfer in the connector. The proposed methodology has been applied and validated through experimental tests at different scales and in particular on laboratory specimens and small-scaled connectors. Based on these last structural tests, a safety factor of almost 8 was obtained for the design method on small-scaled connectors. Prototype tests at scale 1:1 allowed the methodology to be fully validated and a new product to be qualified. Certification bodies validated the whole design process, the employed methodology and the new connector.

A mathematical model is developed for calculating the pressures and flows in an artificial heart, its pneumatic drive unit, and a mock circulatory system. The system is divided into convenient subsystems to facilitate the analysis, and each subsystem is then analyzed separately. The set of independent equations developed is solved on a computer and corresponding experimental tests are made on the actual system. A comparison of the experimental and computer results shows good agreement for the mean flow rate through the pump and also for several instantaneous pressures and flow rates in the system.

A new control design framework for vibration control, the cooperative control of active and semiactive control, is proposed in the paper. In the cooperative control, a structural system having both of an actuator and a semiactive control device, for example, MR damper and so forth, is defined as the control object. In the proposed control approach, the higher control performance is aimed by the cooperative control between the active control with the actuator and the semiactive control with the semiactive control device. A design method to determine the active control input and the command signal to drive the semiactive control device based on the one-step prediction of the control output is proposed. A simulation example of a control system design for a benchmark building is presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed control framework.
