Forcing of Separation Bubbles by Main Flow Unsteadiness or Pulsed Vortex Generating Jets—A Comparison

Low pressure turbines typically operate in the low Reynolds number regime. Depending on the loading of the blade, they may exhibit detached flow with associated reattachment in the rear part of the suction surface. Additionally, the flow is highly time-dependent due to the sequence of rotating and stationary blade rows. The work presented in this paper covers experimental efforts taken to investigate this type of flow in detail. Typical low pressure turbine flow conditions have been chosen as baseline for the experimental work. A pressure distribution has been created on a flat plate by means of a contoured upper wall in a low speed wind tunnel. The distribution matches the one of the Pak-B airfoil. Unsteadiness is then superimposed in two ways: A specific unsteadiness was created by using a rotating flap (RF) downstream of the test section. This results in almost sinusoidal periodic unsteady flow across the plate, simulating the interaction between stator and rotor of a turbine stage. Furthermore, pulsed blowing by vortex generating jets (VGJ) upstream of the suction peak was used to influence the transition process and development of the separation bubble. Measurements have been performed with hot-wire anemometry. Experimental results are presented to compare both forcing mechanisms. In sinusoidal unsteady main flow, the transition occurs naturally by the breakdown of the shear layer instability, which is affected by periodic changes in the overall Reynolds number and thus pressure gradient. In opposition, active flow control (AFC) by VGJ triggers the transition process by impulse and vorticity injection into the boundary layer, while maintaining a constant Reynolds number. The flow fields are compared using phase averaged data of velocity und turbulence intensity as well as boundary layer parameters, namely shape factor and momentum thickness Reynolds number. Finally, a model to describe the time mean intermittency distribution is refined to fit the data.

Velocity profiles were acquired in the suction side boundary layer at several streamwise locations using hot-wire anemometry. Cases were considered at Reynolds numbers (based on the suction surface length and the nominal exit velocity from the cascade) ranging from 25,000 to 330,000. In all cases the boundary layer separated, but at high Reynolds number the separation bubble remained very thin and quickly reattached after transition to turbulence. In the low Reynolds number cases, the boundary layer separated and did not reattach, even when transition occurred. This behavior contrasts with previous research on other airfoils, in which transition, if it occurred, always induced reattachment, regardless of Reynolds number.

Abstract At low Reynolds numbers operating condition, the boundary layer of the high-lift low-pressure turbine (LPT) of aero-engines is prone to separate on the suction surface of the airfoil. The profile losses of the airfoil are largely governed by the size of the separation bubble and the transition process in the boundary layer. However, the wake-induced transition, the natural transition and the instability induced by the Klebanoff streaks complicate the transition process. The boundary layer on the suction surface of a high-lift LPT was investigated at Re = 50,000 with upstream wakes. The numerical simulation was performed with the CFX software using large eddy simulations (LES), and the experiment was performed on a linear cascade. In this study, the wake is divided into the wake center and the wake tail, the unsteady formation process of the streaks and the wall shear stress caused by the wake are analyzed. A new mechanism of generation and development of Klebanoff Streaks was presented to better understand the effect of the wake on the boundary layer. Moreover, it was found that after entering the blade passage, the wake center does not contact the blade but causes the wall shear stress of the front part on the suction surface to increase. However, it is not possible to form strong Klebanoff streaks at the leading edge of the blade by shear sheltering effect. Only the wake tail can form Klebanoff streaks when it contacts the blade.

Based on detailed experimental work conducted at a low speed test facility, this paper describes the transition process in the presence of a separation bubble with low Reynolds number, low free-stream turbulence, and steady main flow conditions. A pressure distribution has been created on a long flat plate by means of a contoured wall opposite of the plate, matching the suction side of a modern low-pressure turbine aerofoil. The main flow conditions for four Reynolds numbers, based on suction surface length and nominal exit velocity, were varied from 80,000 to 300,000, which covers the typical range of flight conditions. Velocity profiles and the overall flow field were acquired in the boundary layer at several streamwise locations using hot-wire anemometry. The data given is in the form of contours for velocity, turbulence intensity, and turbulent intermittency. The results highlight the effects of Reynolds number, the mechanisms of separation, transition, and reattachment, which feature laminar separation-long bubble and laminar separation-short bubble modes. For each Reynolds number, the onset of transition, the transition length, and the general characteristics of separated flow are determined. These findings are compared to the measurement results found in the literature. Furthermore, the experimental data is compared with two categories of correlation functions also given in the literature: (1) correlations predicting the onset of transition and (2) correlations predicting the mode of separated flow transition. Moreover, it is shown that the type of instability involved corresponds to the inviscid Kelvin-Helmholtz instability mode at a dominant frequency that is in agreement with the typical ranges occurring in published studies of separated and free-shear layers.

At off-design conditions, when the blade Reynolds number is low, a significant part of the blade boundary layer can be transitional. Then, standard RANS models are unable to predict the flows correctly but explicit transition modeling provides some improvement. Since large eddy simulations (LES) are improvements on RANS, the performance of LES was examined by simulating a flow through a linear, compressor cascade for which experimental data are available — specifically at the Reynolds number of 210,000 based on blade chord when transition processes occur over a significant extent of the suction surface. The LES were performed with an explicit filtering approach, applying a low-pass filter to achieve sub-grid-scale modeling. Explicit 8th-order difference formulas were used to obtain high resolution spatial derivative terms. An O-grid was wrapped around the blade with suitable clustering for the boundary layer and regions of large changes along the blade. Turbulent in-flow was provided from a precursor simulation of homogeneous, isotropic turbulence. Two LES and a DNS were performed. The second LES refines the grid in the vicinity of the separation bubble on the suction surface, and along the span. Surface pressure distributions from all simulations agree closely with experiment, thus providing a much better prediction than even transition-sensitive RANS computations. Wall normal profiles of axial velocity and fluctuations also agree closely with experiment. Differences between LES and DNS are small, but the refined grid LES is closer to the DNS almost everywhere. This monotonic convergence, expected of the LES method used, demonstrates its reliability. The pressure surface undergoes transition almost immediately downstream of the leading edge. On the suction surface there are streaks as expected for freestream-turbulence-induced transition, but spots do not appear. Instead, a separating shear layer rolls up and breaks down to turbulence at re-attachment. Both LES capture this process. Skin friction distribution reveals the transition near the re-attachment to occur over an extended region, and subsequent relaxation is slower in the LES. The narrower transition zone in the DNS is indicative of the essential role of smaller scales during transition that should not be neglected in LES. Simulation data also reveal that an assumption of laminar kinetic energy transition models that Reynolds shear stress remains small in the pre-transitional region is supported. The remaining differences in the predictions of such models is thus likely to be the separation-induced transition which preempts the spot formation.

This paper describes how it is possible to reduce the profile losses on ultra high lift low pressure (LP) turbine blade profiles with the application of selected surface roughness and wake unsteadiness. Over the past several years, an understanding of wake interactions with the suction surface boundary layer on LP turbines has allowed the design of blades with ever increasing levels of lift. Under steady flow conditions, ultra high lift profiles would have large (and possibly open) separation bubbles present on the suction side which result from the very high diffusion levels. The separation bubble losses produced by it are reduced when unsteady wake flows are present. However, LP turbine blades have now reached a level of loading and diffusion where profile losses can no longer be controlled by wake unsteadiness alone. The ultra high lift profiles investigated here were created by attaching a flap to the trailing edge of another blade in a linear cascade — the so called flap-test technique. The experimental set-up used in this investigation allows for the simulation of upstream wakes by using a moving bar system. Hotwire and hotfilm measurements were used to obtain information about the boundary-layer state on the suction surface of the blade as it evolved in time. Measurements were taken at a Reynolds numbers ranging between 100,000 and 210,000. Two types of ultra high lift profile were investigated; ultra high lift and extended ultra high lift, where the latter has 25% greater back surface diffusion as well as a 12% increase in lift compared to the former. Results revealed that distributed roughness reduced the size of the separation bubble with steady flow. When wakes were present, the distributed roughness amplified disturbances in the boundary layer allowing for more rapid wake induced transition to take place, which tended to eliminate the separation bubble under the wake. The extended ultra high lift profile generated only slightly higher losses than the original ultra high lift profile, but more importantly it generated 12% greater lift.

Active and passive techniques have been used in the past, to control flow separation. Numerous studies were published on controlling and delaying the flow separation on low pressure turbine. In this study, a single dimple (i.e. passive device) is engraved on the suction side of LP turbine cascade T106A. The main aim of this research is to find out the optimum parameters of dimple i.e. diameter (D) and depth (h) which can produce strong enough vortex that can control the flow either in transition or fully turbulent phase. Furthermore, this optimal dimple is engraved to suppress the boundary layer separation at different Reynolds number (based on the chord length and inlet velocity). The dimple of different depth and diameter are used to find the optimal depth to diameter ratio. Computational results show that the optimal ratio of depth to diameter (h/D) for dimple is 0.0845 and depth to grid boundary layer (h/δ) is 0.5152. This optimized dimple efficiently reduces the normalized loss coefficient and it is found that the negative values of shear stresses found in uncontrolled case are being removed by the dimple. After that, dimple of optimized parameters are used to suppress the laminar separation bubble at different Re∼25000, 50000 and 91000. It was noticed that the dimple did not reduce the losses at Re∼25000. But at Re∼50000, it produced such a strong vortex that reduced the normalized loss coefficient to 25%, while 5% losses were reduced at Re∼91000. It can be concluded that the optimized dimple effectively controlled flow separation and reduced normalized loss coefficient from Re 25000 to 91000. As the losses are decreased, this will increase the low pressure turbine efficiency and reduce its fuel consumption.

A detailed experimental investigation of second-generation, controlled-diffusion, compressor stator blades at an off-design inlet-flow angle was performed in a low-speed cascade wind tunnel primarily using laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV). The object of the study was to characterize the off-design flowfield and to obtain LDV measurements of the suction surface boundary layer separation which occurred near mid chord. The effect of Reynolds number on the flow separation in the regime of 210,000 to 640,000 was investigated. Surface flow visualization showed that at the low Re. no. the mid-chord separation bubble started laminar and reattached turbulent within 20% chord on the suction side of the blade. The extent of the bubble compared very well with the measured blade surface pressure distribution which showed a classical plateau and then diffusion in the turbulent region. LDV measurements of the flow reversal in the bubble were performed. At the intermediate Re. no. the boundary layer was transitional before the bubble which had decreased significantly in size (down to 10% chord). At the highest Re. no. the flow was turbulent from close to the leading edge, and three-dimensional flow reversal as a result of endwall effects appeared at approximately 80% chord which did not reattach.
