Obtaining Time-Varying Pulsatile Gas Flow Rates With the Help of Dynamic Pressure Difference and Other Measurements for an Orifice-Plate Meter

Use of a conventional orifice-plate meter is typically restricted to measurements of steady flow rates. For any gas flowing within a duct in a pulsatile manner (i.e., large amplitude mass flow rate fluctuations relative to its steady-in-the-mean value), this paper proposes a new and effective approach for obtaining its time-varying mass flow rate at a specified cross section of an orifice meter. The approach requires time-varying (dynamic) pressure difference measurements across an orifice-plate meter, time-averaged mass flow rate measurements from a separate device (e.g., Coriolis meter), and a dynamic absolute pressure measurement. Steady-in-the-mean turbulent gas flows (Reynolds number ≫2300) with low mean Mach numbers (<0.2) exhibit effectively constant densities over long time-durations and are often made pulsatile by the presence of rotary or oscillatory devices that drive the flow (compressors, pumps, pulsators, etc.). In these pulsatile flows, both flow rate and pressure-difference fluctuation amplitudes at or near the device driver frequency (or its harmonics) are large relative to their steady mean values. The time-varying flow rate values are often affected by transient compressibility effects associated with acoustic waves. If fast Fourier transforms of the absolute pressure and pressure-difference measurements indicate that the predominant frequency is characterized by fp, then the acoustic effects lead to a nonnegligible rate of change of stored mass (associated with density changes) over short time durations (∼ 1/fP) and modest volumes of interest. As a result, for the same steady mean mass flow rate, the time variations (that resolve these density changes over short durations) of mass flow rates associated with pulsatile (and turbulent) gas flows are often different at different cross sections of the orifice meter (or duct). Together with the experimental measurements concurrently obtained from the three recommended devices, a suitable computational approach (as proposed and presented here) is a requirement for effectively converting the experimental information on time-varying pressure and pressure-difference values into the desired dynamic mass flow rate values. The mean mass flow rate measurement assists in eliminating variations in its predictions that arise from the use of turbulent flow simulation capabilities. Two independent verification approaches establish that the proposed measurement approach works well.

This paper presents a numerical comparison of the flow and conjugate heat transfer characteristics about the internal cooling of a nozzle guide vane with three kinds of coolants, including air, steam and mist/steam. Five radial cooling channels are established inside the vanes. The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations, coupled with a fully-developed Shear Stress Transport (with γ-θ transition) turbulent model, are adopted and solved. Different coolant mass flow rates are examined. Different initial mist diameters and mist concentrations are numerically calculated. The mist tracks in five internal channels and the cooling effectiveness at the mid-span are obtained and compared among different initial mist diameters and mist concentrations. The turbulence kinetic energy and heat transfer coefficient inside the internal channel are used to further investigate the effects of the droplet size. The mean cooling effectiveness of the vane outer surface is obtained at different coolant mass flow rates. Results show that the mist/steam cooling has a best cooling performance compared with that of the air and steam. The influence of the mist concentration is much smaller than the initial mist diameter on the mists evaporation. The mists can evaporate entirely at a relative small initial diameter and the evaporation distance increases about two times with the mist mass flow rate increases from 1% ∼ 5% coolant mass flow rate. With a same mist concentration, the faster the mists evaporate, the higher the cooling effectiveness is obtained. Under a certain coolant mass flow rate, the amplification of the mean cooling effectiveness decreases with the increase of the mist concentration. With the increase of the coolant mass flow rate, the differences of the mean cooling effectiveness among different mist concentrations become larger.

This paper considers leakage in mechanical seals under hydrostatic operating condition. A contact model based on the Greenwood and Williamson contact of rough surfaces is developed for treating problems involving mechanical seals in which both the micron scale roughness of the seal face and its macro scale profile are used to obtain either a closed-form equation or a nonlinear equation relating mean plane separation to the mass flow rate. The equations involve the micron scale geometry of the rough surfaces and physical parameter of the seal and carriage. Under hydrostatic condition, it is shown that there is an approximate closed-form solution in which mass flow rate in terms of the mean plane separation, or alternatively, the mean plane separation in terms of the leakage mass flow rate is found. Equations pertaining to leakage in nominally flat seal macro profile is considered and closed form equation relating to leakage flow rate to pressure difference is obtained that contain macro and micron geometries of the seal.

A generalized analysis of the results of numerical and experimental studies of air blowing into a turbulent boundary layer through finely perforated surface consisting of alternating permeable and impermeable sections of varying length providing a sudden change in the flow conditions at the boundaries of these sections is presented. The air blowing coefficient Cb determined by the mass flow rate per unit area of the active perforated sample varied in the range from 0 to 0.008. It is shown that as Cb grows, the maximum reduction in the mean surface skin-friction coefficient CF, which is the value through the permeable area of perforated sample, reaches about 65 %. When keeping the equal mass flow rate Q for all tested combinations, the mean skin-friction coefficient remains constant, independent of geometrical parameters of permeable and impermeable sections. Increasing the length of the last permeable section leads to the growth of relaxation region which is characterized by the reduced skin friction values on the impermeable part of the flat plate.

Measurements are presented for the flow in the tip gap of a planar cascade of turbine blades. Three clearances of from 2.0 to 3.2 percent of the blade chord were considered. Detailed surveys of the velocity magnitude, flow direction, and total pressure within the gap were supplemented by blade surface and endwall static pressure measurements. The results help to clarify the relationship between the leakage mass flow rate distribution and the driving pressure differences. It was found that even for the present relatively large clearances, fluid near the endwall experiences a pressure difference that is comparable with the blade pressure difference. It is also shown that a simple model can predict with good accuracy the mass flow rate distribution and the magnitude and direction of the velocity vectors within the gap.

An experimental study of a turbine tip desensitization method based on tip coolant injection was conducted in a large-scale rotating turbine rig. One of twenty-nine rotor blades was modified and instrumented to have a tip trench with discrete injection holes directed towards the pressure side. Time accurate absolute total pressure was measured 0.3 chord lengths downstream of the rotor exit plane using a fast response dynamic pressure sensor in a phase-locked manner. The test cases presented include results for tip gap heights of 1.40% and 0.72% of the blade height, and coolant injection rates of 0.41%, 0.52%, 0.63%, and 0.72% core mass flow rate. At a gap height of 1.40% the leakage vortex is large, occupying about 15% blade span. A reduction in gap height causes the leakage vortex to reduce in size and move towards the blade suction side. The minimum total pressure measured, for the reduced gap, in the leakage vortex is about 4% greater. Coolant injection from the tip trench is successful in filling in the total pressure defect originally resulting from the leakage vortex without injection. At the higher tip injection rates the leakage vortex is also seen to have moved towards the blade tip. The high momentum associated with the tip jets affects the total pressure distributions in the neighboring passages.

The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of coiling on the flow characteristics of R-407C in an adiabatic spiral capillary tube. The characteristic coiling parameter for a spiral capillary tube is the coil pitch; hence, the effect of the coil pitch on the mass flow rate of R-407C was studied on several capillary tube test sections. It was observed that the coiling of the capillary tube significantly reduced the mass flow rate of R-407C in the adiabatic spiral capillary tube. In order to quantify the effect of coiling, the experiments were also conducted for straight a capillary tube, and it was observed that the coiling of the capillary tube reduced the mass flow rate in the spiral tube in the range of 9–18% as compared with that in the straight capillary tube. A generalized nondimensional correlation for the prediction of the mass flow rates of various refrigerants was developed for the straight capillary tube on the basis of the experimental data of R-407C of the present study, and the data of R-134a, R-22, and R-410A measured by other researchers. Additionally, a refrigerant-specific correlation for the spiral capillary was also proposed on the basis of the experimental data of R-407C of the present study.

Abstract In a Counter Rotating Turbine (CRT), the stationary nozzle is trailed by two rotors that rotate in the opposite direction to each other. Flow in a CRT stage is multifaceted and more three dimensional, especially, in the gap between nozzle and rotor 1 as well as rotor 1 and rotor 2. By varying this gap between the blade rows, the flow and wake pattern can be changed favorably and may lead to improved performance. Present work analyzes the aspect of change in flow field through the interface, especially the wake pattern and deviation in flow with change in spacing. The components of turbine stage are modeled for different gaps between the components using ANSYS® ICEM CFD 14.0. Normalized flow rates ranging from 0.091 to 0.137 are used. The 15, 30, 50 and 70% of the average axial chords are taken as axial gaps in the present analysis. CFX 14.0 is used for simulation. At nozzle inlet, stagnation pressure boundary condition is used. At the turbine stage or rotor 2 outlet, mass flow rate is specified. Pressure distribution contours at the outlets of the blade rows describe the flow pattern clearly in the interface region. Wake strength at nozzle outlet is more for the lowest gap. At rotor 1 outlet, it is less for x/a = 0.3 and increases with gap. Incidence angles at the inlets of rotors are less for the smaller gaps. Deviation angle at the outlet of rotor 1 is also considered, as rotor 1-rotor 2 interaction is more significant in CRT. Deviation angle at rotor 1 outlet is minimum for this gap. Also, for the intermediate mass flow rate of 0.108, x/a = 0.3 is giving more stage performance. This suggests that at certain axial gap, there is better wake convection and flow outline, when compared to other gap cases. Further, it is identified that for the axial gap of x/a = 0.3 and the mean mass flow rate of 0.108, the performance of CRT is maximum. It is clear that the flow pattern at the interface is changing the incidence and deviation with change in axial gap and flow rate. This study is useful for the gas turbine community to identify the flow rates and gaps at which any CRT stage would perform better.

In porous resistances, Darcy’s law provides a good approximation of mass flow rate when the differences between upstream and downstream pressures are sufficiently small. In this range, the mass flow rates are proportional to the porous resistance’s permeability. For gas bearings, the pressure difference is normally higher, and it is known experimentally that the mass flow rates are lower than would result from Darcy’s law. Forchheimer’s law adds an inertial term to Darcy’s law and, when an appropriate coefficient is selected for this term, provides a good approximation of flow rates for the same applications even with the highest pressure differences. This paper presents an experimental and theoretical investigation of porous resistances used in gas bearing and thrust pad supply systems. The porous resistances considered in the investigation were made by sintering bronze powders with different grain sizes to produce cylindrical inserts that can be installed in bearing supply devices. The paper describes the test setup and experimental results obtained for: (i) mass flow rate through single porous resistances at different upstream and downstream pressures and (ii) mass flow rate and pressure distribution on a pneumatic pad featuring the same porous resistances. The theoretical permeability of the chosen porous resistances was calculated, and the results from setup (i) were then used to obtain experimental permeability and to determine the inertial coefficients. The results, which are expressed as a function of the Reynolds number, confirmed the validity of using Forchheimer’s law. The mass flow rates from setup (ii) were compared to those from setup (i) at the same pressure differentials across the resistance.

AbstractThe energy and exergy performance of a parabolic dish collector is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The effect of receiver type, inlet temperature and mass flow rate of heat transfer fluid (HTF), receiver temperature, receiver aspect ratio and solar radiation are investigated. To evaluate the effect of the receiver aperture area on the system performance, three aperture diameters are considered. It is deduced that the fully opened receivers have the greatest exergy and thermal efficiency. The cylindrical receiver has greater energy and exergy efficiency than the conical one due to less exergy destruction. It is found that the highest exergy destruction is due to heat transfer between the sun and the receivers and counts for 35 % to 60 % of the total wasted exergy. For three selected receiver aperture diameters, the exergy efficiency is minimum for a specified HTF mass flow rate. High solar radiation allows the system to work at higher HTF inlet temperatures. To use this system in applications that need high temperatures, in cylindrical and conical receivers, the HTF mass flow rates lower than 0.05 and 0.09 kg/s are suggested, respectively. For applications that need higher amounts of energy content, higher HTF mass flow rates than the above mentioned values are recommended.
