Adjustment of Aerodynamic-Compensation Characteristics of a Pitot Tube by Rear-Body Shape Manipulation

In this paper we present a methodology for adjustment of subsonic compensation characteristics of an aerodynamic-compensation Pitot tube. This methodology is based on manipulation of a Pitot tube profile (shape) downstream of the static pressure port such that its subsonic characteristics are modified while the supersonic characteristics remain unchanged. Due to this “rear-body” shape adjustment, complete redesign of a developed or in service Pitot tube is not required. We have used computational fluid dynamics tools in the analysis and design refinement of a Pitot tube by rear-body shape adjustment. The complete Mach number regime (M<2) has been computationally analyzed for three different rear-body profiles. The results of our study indicate that significant variation in subsonic compensation characteristics of a Pitot tube is possible by this method.

The contribution from the base drag due to the sub-atmospheric pressure is significant. It can be more than two-thirds of the net drag. There is a need to increase the base pressure and hence decrease the base drag. This research examines the effect of Mach Number on base pressure. To accomplish this objective, it controls the efficacy in an enlarged duct computed by the numerical approach using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Analysis. This experiment was carried out by considering the expansion level and the aspect cavity ratio. The computational fluid dynamics method is used to model supersonic motion with the sudden expansion, and a convergent-divergent nozzle is used. The Mach number is 1.74 for the present study, and the area ratio is 2.56. The L/D ratio varied from 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10, and the simulated nozzle pressure ratio ranged from 3 to 11. The two-dimensional planar design used commercial software from ANSYS. The airflow from a Mach 1.74 convergent-divergent axi-symmetric nozzle expanded suddenly into circular ducts of diameters 17 and 24.5 mm with and without annular rectangular cavities. The diameter of the duct is taken D=17mm and D=24.5mm. The C-D nozzle was developed and modeled in the present study: K-ε standard wall function turbulence model was used with the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and validated. The result indicates that the base pressure is impacted by the expansion level, the enlarged duct size, and the passage’s area ratio.

In this paper some characteristics of non-steady, compressible, flow are explored, including compression and expansion wave interactions and creation. The work to be presented herein is a Computational Fluid Dynamics investigation of the complex fluid phenomena that occur inside three-dimensional region, specifically with regard to the structure of the oblique shock waves, the reflected shock waves and the interactions of the shock waves. The flow is so complex that there exist oblique shock waves, expansion fans, slip surfaces, and shock wave interactions and reflections. The flow is non-steady, turbulent, viscous, compressible, and high-speed supersonic. The work to be presented herein is a Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis of flow over a 15-degree angle double wedge for a compressible air, with spin angle of 10-degree and Mach number of 2.5. The problem to be solved involves formation of shock waves, expansion fans and slip surfaces, so that the general characteristics of supersonic flow are explored through this problem. Shock waves and slip surfaces are discontinuities in fluid mechanics problems. It is essential to evaluate the ability of numerical technique that can solve problems in which shocks and contact surfaces occur. In particular it is necessary to understand the details of developing a mesh that will allow resolution of these discontinuities. Results including contour plots of pressure, temperature, and Mach number will show that CFD is capable of predicting accurate results and is also able to capture the discontinuities in the flow, e.g., the oblique shock waves and the slip surfaces. Through this computational analysis, a better interpretation of the physical phenomenon of the three-dimensional shock waves interaction and reflection can be achieved.

Many new turbine designs may take large timelines to prove their worth. For getting duty condition at optimum efficiency, one can always scale speed, diameter, if a very efficient benchmark is available. This paper examines the similarity-based scaling strategy to develop radial inflow turbines for different compressible fluids from a well-established NASA radial flow turbine designed and experimentally tested with air as the working fluid. The NASA 1730 air turbine experimental data have been used as the benchmark here and adopted multiple fluids to understand scaling. The considered fluids are supercritical carbon dioxide for the Brayton cycle, helium for the cryogenic liquefaction cycle, and R143a for the organic Rankine cycle. The uniqueness here is to have three types of cycles, viz. closed-loop Brayton cycle, organic Rankine cycle, and cryogenic helium liquefaction cycle, which employ different working fluids, adapting the same NASA turbine geometry. This paper has described the scaling methodology and presented the simulated turbine performance of SCO2, helium, and R143a using computational fluid dynamics. The dimensionless curves for these fluids are plotted on the corresponding experimental characteristics of the NASA turbine. Out of the three fluids, SCO2 showed the perfect Mach number matching for the flow and torque coefficient curves. The Mach number deviations in the case of helium were small, and the variations were slightly higher for R143a. The efficiencies were the highest for R143a, followed by SCO2 and helium. Thus, the scaling was found to be effective in all cases. Thus, the standard turbomachinery space developed for air as fluid can be used effectively for the development of turboexpanders for various cycles with different working fluids without redesigning the entire shape using similarity-based scaling. The benchmark NASA 1730 turbine has proven this in three special cases. This paper is not against designing new machines but is only trying to say that when such good benchmark machines like NASA 1730 turbine is available; designers must use the power of similitude to adapt it to match new fluids and new conditions.

Despite that boxfishes have a rigid carapace that restricts body undulation, they are highly manoeuvrable and manage to swim with remarkably dynamic stability. Recent research has indicated that the rigid body shape of boxfishes shows an inherently unstable response in its rotations caused by course-disturbing flows. Hence, any net stabilizing effect should come from the fishes' fins. The aim of the current study was to determine the effect of the surface area and orientation of the caudal fin on the yaw torque exerted on the yellow boxfish, Ostracion cubicus , a square cross-sectional shaped species of boxfish. Yaw torques quantified in a flow tank using a physical model with an attachable closed or open caudal fin at different body and tail angles and at different water flow speeds showed that the caudal fin is crucial for controlling yaw. These flow tank results were confirmed by computational fluid dynamics simulations. The caudal fin acts as both a course-stabilizer and rudder for the naturally unstable rigid body with regard to yaw. Boxfishes seem to use the interaction of the unstable body and active changes in the shape and orientation of the caudal fin to modulate manoeuvrability and stability.

In this paper, we propose a novel family of semi-implicit hybrid finite volume/finite element schemes for computational fluid dynamics (CFD), in particular for the approximate solution of the incompressible and compressible Navier-Stokes equations, as well as for the shallow water equations on staggered unstructured meshes in two and three space dimensions. The key features of the method are the use of an edge-based/face-based staggered dual mesh for the discretization of the nonlinear convective terms at the aid of explicit high resolution Godunov-type finite volume schemes, while pressure terms are discretized implicitly using classical continuous Lagrange finite elements on the primal simplex mesh. The resulting pressure system is symmetric positive definite and can thus be very efficiently solved at the aid of classical Krylov subspace methods, such as a matrix-free conjugate gradient method. For the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, the schemes are by construction asymptotic preserving in the low Mach number limit of the equations, hence a consistent hybrid FV/FE method for the incompressible equations is retrieved. All parts of the algorithm can be efficiently parallelized, i.e., the explicit finite volume step as well as the matrix-vector product in the implicit pressure solver. Concerning parallel implementation, we employ the Message-Passing Interface (MPI) standard in combination with spatial domain decomposition based on the free software package METIS. To show the versatility of the proposed schemes, we present a wide range of applications, starting from environmental and geophysical flows, such as dambreak problems and natural convection, over direct numerical simulations of turbulent incompressible flows to high Mach number compressible flows with shock waves. An excellent agreement with exact analytical, numerical or experimental reference solutions is achieved in all cases. Most of the simulations are run with millions of degrees of freedom on thousands of CPU cores. We show strong scaling results for the hybrid FV/FE scheme applied to the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, using millions of degrees of freedom and up to 4096 CPU cores. The largest simulation shown in this paper is the well-known 3D Taylor-Green vortex benchmark run on 671 million tetrahedral elements on 32,768 CPU cores, showing clearly the suitability of the presented algorithm for the solution of large CFD problems on modern massively parallel distributed memory supercomputers.

Purpose Using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique, this paper aims to investigate the influence of key parameters such as throat diameter; the suction ratio on the flow field behaviors such as Mach number; pressure; and temperature. Design/methodology/approach To investigate the effect of throat diameter, it is simulated for 4, 6, 8 and 10 mm as throat diameters. The governing equations have been solved by standard code of Fluent Software together with a compressible 2 D symmetric and turbulence model with the standard k–ε model. First, the influence of the throat diameter is investigated by keeping the inlet mass flow constant. Findings The results show that a place of shock wave creation is changed by changing the throat diameter. The obtained results illustrate that the maximum amount of Mach number is dependent on the throat diameter. It is obtained from the results that for smaller throats higher Mach numbers can be obtained. Therefore, for mixing purposes smaller throats and for exhausting bigger throats seems to be appropriate. Originality/value The obtained numerical results are compared to the existing experimental ones which show good agreement.

Abstract The results of previous studies have proved that manufacture variations can cause a noticeable influence on compressor aerodynamic performance. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the influence rules and mechanisms of manufacture variations on supersonic/transonic blades aerodynamic performance. The variations used in this study were measured from some newly manufactured high-pressure compressors. In the present study, several blade sections with different design Mach number conditions are selected for further statistical analysis of measured deviation data. Therefore, some systematic errors in the deviation data have been revealed. Based on these data, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method has been used to obtain the aerodynamic performances of a large number of the measured blade elements. And then, the analysis of the influence rules of manufacture variations on blade aerodynamic performance in different Mach number conditions has been carried out. The present results indicate that the effects of manufacture variations on blade aerodynamic performance in the lower Mach number (0.8) condition are much more significant comparing to that in the higher Mach number (0.9∼1.2) conditions. Based on this, influence mechanisms of manufacture variations on positive incidence range and negative incidence range have been analyzed. The differences of influence mechanisms in different Mach number conditions are the focus of research.
