This paper presents experimental studies of vibration-assisted grinding with small-amplitude vibration (in the order of 1 μm) in terms of ground surface finish and tool life. The objectives are to obtain finer surface finishes on molds and longer tool life. The investigation shows that vibration-assisted grinding can improve surface finishes when compared with conventional grinding. Two different vibration frequencies are conducted in the experiments. Results show that surface finish and tool life are influenced by different process parameters. In vibration-assisted grinding, the best surface finish is obtained by using higher frequency of 11.4 kHz and lower feed rates. In this study, vibration-assisted grinding can extend tool life more than twice as that in conventional grinding. It is also shown that tool life in vibration-assisted grinding can be significantly improved by using minimum quantity lubrication (MQL).

Based on the accurate geometrical theory for the extensible elastic beams, an exact mathematical model of post-buckling transverse free vibration of Euler beams subjected to a distributed tangential follower force along the central axis are established. By using shooting method, pre-buckling free vibrations of both simply supported and fixed Euler beam are solved and the responses of small amplitude vibration are obtained. The numerical results show that all the frequencies of unbuckled beams decrease continuously with the increment of the load parameters.

Vibration-assisted machining (VAM) combines small-amplitude vibration with different machining process to improve the process fabrication quality. It has been applied to a number of machining processes, such as turning, drilling, grinding and polishing. The emphasis on this literature is the vibration-assisted abrasive machining (VAAM), which involves with finishing and grinding processes where VAAM have been applied to hard metal, brittle material and complex geometries products like optical molds. This paper presents different vibrating units in VAAM from tool vibration to workpiece vibration, which also includes different vibrating paths from linear to ellipse. Typical hardware systems used to achieve these vibratory motions are described too.

Special Case

Simplified nonlinear governing differential equations proposed by Berger and extended by Nash and Modeer are applied to obtain natural frequencies of a circular plate with concentric rigid part at its center in large amplitude vibrations. A modified Galerkin technique is used to derive a nonlinear differential equation of which the solution is given in terms of elliptic functions. The small amplitude vibration is treated as a special case of large amplitude vibration, while the free, large amplitude vibration of a flat circular plate is studied as a special case of large amplitude vibration of a circular plate with a concentric mass. The numerical results show that the effect of added concentric rigid mass to a circular plate is significant.
