Evaluation of Steam Washers in Power-Plant Boilers

A research program was undertaken to study the feasibility of employing steam washers to control silica deposition in high-pressure turbines. Under certain laboratory conditions, steam washing was found to be effective; however, its useful application appears to be limited to a very small number of power stations. Space limitations in modern boiler drums make it difficult to install the bulky equipment without interfering with flow and distribution through the drum. A washer installation can actually be the cause of mechanical carry-over. The use of high-quality make-up water and the prevention of raw-water contamination provide a more economical and trouble-free solution to the silica problem. A steam washer has little practical value in plants where good external control of silica is practiced.

This paper sets out an assessment of the value and practicality of the construction of fossil fired generating plant designed and built as single units and includes a proposal for the design and layout of a single unit designed to maximize the benefits derived from this concept. The conclusion is that an acceptable design of power plant, based on the construction of single 600 MW units, can be developed for the UK system which could prove to be advantageous in construction time, in capital cost and in running cost. The layout applies equally effectively to large ‘green field’ sites or for replanting existing stations; in addition, the plant can be replicated in detail and thereby reduce design and engineering costs. Finally the layout can also be applied in principle to smaller units for overseas utilities as required by their system developments.

Accounting errors and fraud are common in most businesses, but there is a difference between fraud and misinterpretation of communication or accounting regulations. The role of management in preventing fraud becomes important in the last decades and the importance of auditing in curbing corruption is increasingly revealed. There is a strong connection between fraud and corruption, accelerated by electronic systems and modern platforms.The most recent developments tend to confirm that external auditing is curbing corruption, due to international accounting and auditing standards at national and regional levels. Thus, a better implementation of accounting standards and high quality of external control could prevent errors and fraud in accounting, and reduce corruption, as well.The aim of this paper is to present some particular aspects of errors and fraud in accounting, and how external audit could ensure accuracy and accountability in financial reporting.

In pursuance of sufficient, stable and clean energy to solve the ever-looming power crisis in Ghana, the Nuclear Power Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission has on the agenda to advise the government on the nuclear power to include in the country's energy mix. After consideration of several proposed nuclear reactor technologies, the Nuclear Power Institute considered a high pressure reactor or vodo-vodyanoi energetichesky reactor as the nuclear power technologies for Ghana's first nuclear power plant. As part of technology assessments, neutronic safety parameters of both reactors are investigated. The MCNP neutronic code was employed as a computational tool to analyze the reactivity temperature coefficients, moderator void coefficient, criticality and neutron behavior at various operating conditions. The high pressure reactor which is still under construction and theoretical safety analysis, showed good inherent safety features which are comparable to the already existing European pressurized reactor technology.

The most critical component of a wind power plant is the transmission line, which carries two key tasks – the transpor-tation and distribution of electricity. The transmission line is also responsible for the various substations, wind power stations to contact to its safe and smooth operation. As the competition order of wind power projects is more chaotic, the quality of the project cannot be supervised and controlled by the whole process. The quality control of the project is not up to standard, and the overall quality of the transmission line will be affected. This paper focuses on two aspects of the elaboration, one is the wind turbine transmission line project common quality problems; the other is how to build wind power plant transmission line quality assurance system.
