An experimental investigation has been conducted to determine the magnitudes and directions of the unbalanced radial forces on centrifugal pump impellers. The work covers single volutes for a wide specific speed range, double volutes, concentric casings, and modifications of the concentric casing. The results are presented in graphical form and are discussed. A method, making use of strain gages, was devised for determining the magnitudes and directions of the resultant radial forces and is described.

An experimental investigation of the magnitude and direction of the unbalanced radial force on centrifugal pump impellers was made. Pumps with single volute, semiconcentric and fully concentric casings of several specific speeds, collector aspect ratios, and with both closed and semiclosed impellers were tested over the full operating range. An equation enabling prediction of expected radial forces based only on pump geometry, operating speed, and capacity (expressed as fraction of capacity at best efficiency) is presented.

Single-blade centrifugal impellers for sewage systems undergo both unsteady radial and axial thrusts. Therefore, it is extremely important for the improvement of pump reliability to quantitatively grasp these fluctuating hydrodynamic forces and determine the generation mechanism behind them. In this study, we conducted component analyses of radial and axial thrusts of closed, single-blade centrifugal pumps with different blade outlet angles by numerical analysis while considering leakage flow. The results revealed the effect of the blade outlet angle on the components of radial and axial thrusts. For increased flow rates, the time-averaged values of the pressure component were similar for all impellers, although its fluctuating components were higher for impellers with larger blade outlet angles. Moreover, the fluctuating inertia component of the impeller with a blade outlet angle of 8° decreased as the flow rate increased, whereas those with 16° and 24° angles increased. Therefore, the radial thrust on the hydraulic part was significantly higher for impellers with high blade outlet angles.

Experimental and numerical investigations have been carried out to study the behaviour of a centrifugal pump operating in direct mode or turbine mode. First of all, the complete characteristics (head, power, and efficiency) were measured experimentally using a specific test loop. The numerical data obtained from a CFD study performed with the ANSYS CFX software and based on steady state and unsteady approaches were compared to the experimental results. The representation in the 4 operating quadrants shows the various operating zones where the head is always positive. Then, the unsteady radial forces were analysed from transient computations. The results obtained for the pump operation are consistent with the literature and extended to the nonnormal operating conditions, namely, for very high flowrate values. The evolution of the radial load during turbine operation is presented for various partial flow operating points.
