The relationship between stress and rate of strain for a non-Newtonian fluid with pseudoplastic behavior is assumed to be a cubic power series. Under this assumption a solution of the slider bearing without side leakage can be obtained using a perturbation technique. The solution turns out to be relatively simple in form in contrast to what results when a general power law is used.

The working characteristics of a finite width slider bearing lubricated by a non-Newtonian fluid are computed. The analysis proposed here allows its performances to be evaluated by means of a pocket calculator. For that purpose, a computer code based on a finite element method is used. The program runs for different values of pertinent kinematical, geometrical and rheological parameters. The corresponding results are fitted by means of adequate analytical formulas, which are very easy to handle. The accuracy of these empirical formulas is investigated in several typical cases. The agreement with the numerical solution is proven to be satisfactory.

The osmotic water permeability of human red cells has been reexamined with a stopped-flow device and a new perturbation technique. Small osmotic gradients are used to minimize the systematic error caused by nonlinearities in the relationship between cell volume and light scattering. Corrections are then made for residual systematic error. Our results show that the hydraulic conductivity, Lp, is essentially independent of the direction of water flow and of osmolality in the range 184-365 mosM. the mean value of Lp obtained obtained was 1.8 +/- 0.1 (SEM) X 10-11 cm3 dyne -1 s-1.

Close attentions have been widely paid to the engineering textured and slip surfaces for improving bearing tribological performances. Comparison studies on the tribological characteristics of slip and textured surfaces are carried out in this work. The analysis results point out that the influences of surface texture and boundary slip on tribological performances of slider bearing are strongly similar. For the determinate surface textures, there is one and only value of slip velocity to make the tribological performances of textured and slip surfaces in agreement. The corresponding relation between the slip velocity and the texture structure parameters is also obtained, and the size of slip velocity is directly related to the texture geometry parameters including its position parameters. This study will help us to further understand the relationship between boundary slip and surface texture and also the slip phenomenon.

The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of non-Newtonian lubricant on the stability of oil film journal bearings mounted on flexible support using linear perturbation technique. The model of non-Newtonian lubricant developed by Dien and Elrod is taken into consideration. The dynamic co-coefficients are calculated for different values of power law index and length to diameter ratio. These are then used to find stability margin for different support parameters to study the effect of the non-Newtonian lubricant.
