The Molecular Transit Time and Its Correlation With the Stability of Externally Pressurized Gas-Lubricated Bearings

This paper advances the hypothesis that the regimes of unstable operation of externally pressurized gas-lubricated bearings may be defined by certain dimensionless parameters in much the same way as the Reynolds’ number predicts the transition of laminar to turbulent flow. A theoretical discussion of the basic principles of gas bearings indicates that unstable operation is related to the capacity of a bearing to change its contained fluid mass. Some general expressions are developed which suggest the nature of some dimensionless parameters and permit experimental evaluation of the theory.

The stability of fluid contained between concentric rotating cylinders has been investigated and it has been shown that, when only the inner cylinder rotates, the flow becomes unstable when a certain Reynolds number of the flow is exceeded. When the outer cylinder only is rotated, the flow is stable so far as disturbances of the type produced in the former case are concerned, but provided the Reynolds number of the flow exceeds a certain value, turbulence sets in. The object of the present experiments was partly to measure the torque reaction between two cylinders in the two cases in order to find the effect of centrifugal force on the turbulence, and partly to find the critical Reynolds numbers for the transition from stream-line to turbulent flow. The apparatus is shown diagrammatically in fig. 1.

The flow of a viscous model fluid in a flat channel with a non-uniform temperature field is considered. The problem of the stability of a thermoviscous fluid is solved on the basis of the derived generalized Orr-Sommerfeld equation by the spectral decomposition method in Chebyshev polynomials. The effect of taking into account the linear and exponential dependences of the fluid viscosity on temperature on the spectral characteristics of the hydrodynamic stability equation for an incompressible fluid in a flat channel with given different wall temperatures is investigated. Analytically obtained profiles of the flow rate of a thermovisible fluid. The spectral pictures of the eigenvalues of the generalized Orr-Sommerfeld equation are constructed. It is shown that the structure of the spectra largely depends on the properties of the liquid, which are determined by the viscosity functional dependence index. It has been established that for small values of the thermoviscosity parameter the spectrum compares the spectrum for isothermal fluid flow, however, as it increases, the number of eigenvalues and their density increase, that is, there are more points at which the problem has a nontrivial solution. The stability of the flow of a thermoviscous fluid depends on the presence of an eigenvalue with a positive imaginary part among the entire set of eigenvalues found with fixed Reynolds number and wavenumber parameters. It is shown that with a fixed Reynolds number and a wave number with an increase in the thermoviscosity parameter, the flow becomes unstable. The spectral characteristics determine the structure of the eigenfunctions and the critical parameters of the flow of a thermally viscous fluid. The eigenfunctions constructed in the subsequent works show the behavior of transverse-velocity perturbations, their possible growth or decay over time.

Abstract Based on HARPS-N radial velocities (RVs) and TESS photometry, we present a full characterisation of the planetary system orbiting the late G dwarf After the identification of three transiting candidates by TESS, we discovered two additional external planets from RV analysis. RVs cannot confirm the outer TESS transiting candidate, which would also make the system dynamically unstable. We demonstrate that the two transits initially associated with this candidate are instead due to single transits of the two planets discovered using RVs. The four planets orbiting TOI-561 include an ultra-short period (USP) super-Earth (TOI-561 b) with period Pb = 0.45 d, mass Mb = 1.59 ± 0.36 M⊕ and radius Rb = 1.42 ± 0.07 R⊕, and three mini-Neptunes: TOI-561 c, with Pc = 10.78 d, Mc = 5.40 ± 0.98 M⊕, Rc = 2.88 ± 0.09 R⊕; TOI-561 d, with Pd = 25.6 d, Md = 11.9 ± 1.3 M⊕, Rd = 2.53 ± 0.13 R⊕; and TOI-561 e, with Pe = 77.2 d, Me = 16.0 ± 2.3 M⊕, Re = 2.67 ± 0.11 R⊕. Having a density of 3.0 ± 0.8 g cm−3, TOI-561 b is the lowest density USP planet known to date. Our N-body simulations confirm the stability of the system and predict a strong, anti-correlated, long-term transit time variation signal between planets d and e. The unusual density of the inner super-Earth and the dynamical interactions between the outer planets make TOI-561 an interesting follow-up target.

This article describes a numerical and experimental investigation of turbulent flow in pipes with periodic “d-type” corrugations. Four geometric configurations of d-type corrugated surfaces with different groove heights and lengths are evaluated, and calculations for Reynolds numbers ranging from 5000 to 100,000 are performed. The numerical analysis is carried out using computational fluid dynamics, and two turbulence models are considered: the two-equation, low-Reynolds-number Chen–Kim k-ε turbulence model, for which several flow properties such as friction factor, Reynolds stress, and turbulence kinetic energy are computed, and the algebraic LVEL model, used only to compute the friction factors and a velocity magnitude profile for comparison. An experimental loop is designed to perform pressure-drop measurements of turbulent water flow in corrugated pipes for the different geometric configurations. Pressure-drop values are correlated with the friction factor to validate the numerical results. These show that, in general, the magnitudes of all the flow quantities analyzed increase near the corrugated wall and that this increase tends to be more significant for higher Reynolds numbers as well as for larger grooves. According to previous studies, these results may be related to enhanced momentum transfer between the groove and core flow as the Reynolds number and groove length increase. Numerical friction factors for both the Chen–Kim k-ε and LVEL turbulence models show good agreement with the experimental measurements.

The stability of nonlinear tertiary solutions in rotating plane Couette flow is examined numerically. It is found that the tertiary flows, which bifurcate from two-dimensional streamwise vortex flows, are stable within a certain range of the rotation rate when the Reynolds number is relatively small. The stability boundary is determined by perturbations which are subharmonic in the streamwise direction. As the Reynolds number is increased, the rotation range for the stable tertiary motions is destroyed gradually by oscillatory instabilities. We expect that the tertiary flow is overtaken by time-dependent motions for large Reynolds numbers. The results are compared with the recent experimental observation by Tillmark & Alfredsson (1996).

Abstract The turbulent flow in a compressor cascade is calculated by using a new simulation method, i.e., parameter extension simulation (PES). It is defined as the calculation of a turbulent flow with the help of a reference solution. A special large-eddy simulation (LES) method is developed to calculate the reference solution for PES. Then, the reference solution is extended to approximate the exact solution for the Navier-Stokes equations. The Richardson extrapolation is used to estimate the model error. The compressor cascade is made of NACA0065-009 airfoils. The Reynolds number 3.82 × 105 and the attack angles −2° to 7° are accounted for in the study. The effects of the end-walls, attack angle, and tripping bands on the flow are analyzed. The PES results are compared with the experimental data as well as the LES results using the Smagorinsky, k-equation and WALE subgrid models. The numerical results show that the PES requires a lower mesh resolution than the other LES methods. The details of the flow field including the laminar-turbulence transition can be directly captured from the PES results without introducing any additional model. These characteristics make the PES a potential method for simulating flows in turbomachinery with high Reynolds numbers.

Abstract Turbulent flow, especially around chokes, downhole safety valves and inflow control devices, favors scale deposition potentially leading to severe loss of production. Recently, scale formation under turbulent conditions has been studied and progressed, focused on the bulk precipitation (SPE164070) and a small bore valve loop test (SPE 155428). However, bulk precipitation is not fully representative the surface deposition in the fields and the Reynolds number of modified loop is unknown. The relationship between a measured Reynolds number and surface deposition up until this study has not been addressed. A newly developed test methodology with rotating cylinder has been applied to generate high shear rate and evaluate surface deposition with Reynolds numbers up to ~41000. The relationship between Reynolds number and surface deposition is addressed. Using this highly representable test method for BaSO4 scale deposition, several different generic types of inhibitor chemistries, including polymers and phosphonates, were assessed under different levels of turbulence to evaluate their performance on surface deposition. The results showed it is not always true that higher turbulence results in higher dose of inhibitor being required to control scale. It is inhibitor chemistry and mechanisms dependent. The scale inhibitorscan be classified as three types when evaluating the trend of mass deposition versus Reynolds number and the morphology of the crystals deposited on the metal surface. ➢ Type 1: Crytal growth inhibitors. The mass of surface deposition increases with the increase of turbulence, along with smaller crystals.➢ Type 2: Dispersion and crystal growth inhibitor. The higher the turbulence, the less mass deposition, along with smaller crystals.➢ Type 3: Dispersion scale inhibitors. The higher the turbulence, the less mass deposition. The size of the crystals has no major change. This paper gives a comprehensive study of the effect of flow condition on the scale surface deposition and inhibition mechanisms. In addition, it details how this methodology and new environmentally acceptable inhibitor chemistry can be coupled to develop a chemical technology toolbox that also includes techniques for advanced scale inhibitor analysis and improved scale inhibitor retention, to design optimum scale squeeze packages for the harsh scaling conditions associated with turbulent flow conditions.

Abstract Perhaps the most dramatic example of surprising behavior when circulation is imposed on a combustion-driven flow is the fire whirl, where the burning gases form a tall slender column. Relatively few studies have addressed the influence of circulation on the development of combustion-driven flows. Three dimensionless parameters characterize this interplay: the Froude number, the swirl number and the Reynolds number. It is surprising that for most studies, even with plausible assumptions concerning the experiments, not enough information is given to determine the values of these parameters. We will experimentally reconstruct these studies in an effort to characterize parametrically these interactions. Both buoyancy-driven and momentum-driven combustion processes will be investigated to determine the influence of circulation. Theoretical studies will occur in conjunction to provide the most complete parametric investigation.

Loss characteristics of sharp-edged orifices, quadrant-edged orifices for varying edge radii, and nozzles are studied for Reynolds numbers less than 10,000 for β ratios from 0.2 to 0.8. The results may be reliably extrapolated to higher Reynolds numbers. Presentation of losses as a percentage of meter pressure differential shows that the flow can be identified into fully laminar regime, critical Reynolds number regime, relaminarization regime, and turbulent flow regime. An integrated picture of variation of parameters such as discharge coefficient, loss coefficient, settling length, pressure recovery length, and center line velocity confirms this classification.
