Mechatronics is the integration of different sciences and techniques of mechanical engineering, automatic control, electronics, and informatics. The rapid evolution of the market competitors requires the reduction of development time of a product while increasing the quality and performance. It is, therefore, necessary to increase the efficiency of the design process. To meet this need, simulation and, especially, virtual prototyping have become a key technology. It is difficult to find simulation tools are able to analyze multidependent systems of different areas. However, an environment that allows a simulation integrating multidisciplinary mechatronic systems is necessary. This paper describes a method of design and simulation of mechatronic systems. First, we identify the behavior model and its associated 3D geometric model. The behavior model is seen as a dynamic hybrid system of two coupled hybrid automata (operative part and control part). Then, we present OpenMASK and OpenModelica simulators, the IEEE1516 standard HLA and work related to this distributed architecture for simulation. In a top-down approach, we present our method and experiments to integrate HLA functionalities in these simulators and to distribute the modeling elements of mechatronic systems. Also, we propose extensions to integrate real-time for interactive simulations. Finally, we apply our approach on a representative example of a mechatronic system.

This chapter discusses the challenges high-end storage solutions will have with future demands. Due to heavy end-user demands for real-time processing of data access, this need must be addressed by high-end storage solutions. But what type of high-end storage solutions address this need and are suitable to ensure high performance write and retrieval of data in real-time from high- end storage infrastructures, including read and write access from digital archives? For this reason, this chapter reviews a few disk and tape solutions as well as combined disk- and tape storage solutions. The review on the different storage solutions does not focus on compliance of data storage management, but on available commercial high-end systems, addressing scalability and performance requirements both for online storage and archives. High level requirements aid in identifying high-end storage system features and support Extreme Scale infrastructures for the amount of data that high-end storage systems will need to manage in future.

Here, we present the concept of an open virtual prototyping framework (VPF) for maritime systems and operations that enables its users to develop reusable component or subsystem models, and combine them in full-system simulations for prototyping, verification, training, and performance studies. This framework consists of a set of guidelines for model coupling, high-level and low-level coupling interfaces to guarantee interoperability, a full-system simulation software, and example models and demonstrators. We discuss the requirements for such a framework, address the challenges and the possibilities in fulfilling them, and aim to give a list of best practices for modular and efficient virtual prototyping and full-system simulation. The context of our work is within maritime systems and operations, but the issues and solutions we present here are general enough to be of interest to a much broader audience, both industrial and scientific.

In this paper, we present a method, which is based on hybrid automata and Real-Time Unified Modeling Language (UML) to analyze and design the control parts of mechatronic systems with input or output events and signals in order to effectively gather their structure and behaviour. We introduce step-by-step analysis and design activities of a controlled mechatronic system such as the specification of its hybrid automaton and realization hypotheses, the identification of object collaborations of this system, the identification of main control capsules, their ports and communication protocols, with their static and dynamic links. These activities are conducted by specializing the iterative life cycle of system development. Then, we indicate important hypotheses, which allow all the identified capsules of this system to make their evolutions. We apply this method to develop an Electro-Hydraulic Governor (EHG) system, which allows the frequency of an electro-hydraulic station to be stabilized.

The presented paper describes a hardware-accelerated field programmable gate array (FPGA)–based solution capable of real-time stereo matching for temporal statistical pattern projector systems. Modern 3D measurement systems have seen an increased use of temporal statistical pattern projectors as their active illumination source. The use of temporal statistical patterns in stereo vision systems includes the advantage of not requiring information about pattern characteristics, enabling a simplified projector design. Stereo-matching algorithms used in such systems rely on the locally unique temporal changes in brightness to establish a pixel correspondence between the stereo image pair. Finding the temporal correspondence between individual pixels in temporal image pairs is computationally expensive, requiring GPU-based solutions to achieve real-time calculation. By leveraging a high-level synthesis approach, matching cost simplification, and FPGA-specific design optimizations, an energy-efficient, high throughput stereo-matching solution was developed. The design is capable of calculating disparity images on a 1024 × 1024(@291 FPS) input image pair stream at 8.1 W on an embedded FPGA platform (ZC706). Several different design configurations were tested, evaluating device utilization, throughput, power consumption, and performance-per-watt. The average performance-per-watt of the FPGA solution was two times higher than in a GPU-based solution.

Detecting threats like adult, violent, and phishing tweets on online social networks is a crucial issue in recent years. The aim of the work is to identify phishing content from the users' perspective in real-time tweets. To outline such content comprehensively, lexicon analysis with sentiments are encapsulated to investigate tweets that yield phishing dynamic keywords, while some features and parameters are altered to optimize the performance. To support the preliminary study, the approach is rigorously designed to assemble users' opinions on completely different classes of phishing content. Each direct and indirect opinions as well as recently projected opinions are listed to characterize all sorts of phishing content. The authors use word level analysis with sentiments to build keyword blacklist lexicons. High promising results and high level of accuracy and performance are obtained experimentally if compared with the alternative algorithms.

A key aspect of work processes in service sector firms is the interconnection between tasks and performance. Relational coordination can play an important role in addressing the issues of coordinating organizational activities due to high level of interdependence complexity in service sector firms. Research has primarily supported the aspect that well devised high performance work systems (HPWS) can intensify organizational performance. There is a growing debate, however, with regard to understanding the “mechanism” linking HPWS and performance outcomes. Using relational coordination theory, this study examines a model that examine the effects of subsets of HPWS, such as motivation, skills and opportunity enhancing HR practices on relational coordination among employees working in reciprocal interdependent job settings. Data were gathered from multiple sources including managers and employees at individual, functional and unit levels to know their understanding in relation to HPWS and relational coordination (RC) in 218 bank branches in Pakistan. Data analysis via structural equation modelling, results suggest that HPWS predicted RC among officers at the unit level. The findings of the study have contributions to both, theory and practice.

This paper proposes a graph-based algorithm for constructing 3D Korean traditional houses automatically using a computer graphics technique. In particular, we target designing the most popular traditional house type, a giwa house, whose roof is covered with a set of Korean traditional roof tiles called giwa. In our approach, we divided the whole design processes into two different parts. At a high level, we propose a special data structure called ‘modeling graphs’. A modeling graph consists of a set of nodes and edges. A node represents a particular component of the house and an edge represents the connection between two components with all associated parameters, including an offset vector between components. Users can easily add/ delete nodes and make them connect by an edge through a few mouse clicks. Once a modeling graph is built, then it is interpreted and rendered on a component-by-component basis by traversing nodes in a procedural way. At a low level, we came up with all the required parameters for constructing the components. Among all the components, the most beautiful but complicated part is the gently curved roof structures. In order to represent the sophisticated roof style, we introduce a spline curve-based modeling technique that is able to create curvy silhouettes of three different roof styles. In this process, rather than just applying a simple texture image onto the roof, which is widely used in commercial software, we actually laid out 3D giwa tiles on the roof seamlessly, which generated more realistic looks. Through many experiments, we verified that the proposed algorithm can model and render the giwa house at a real time rate.

Nurses working in palliative care are at risk of burnout. The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory was used to determine burnout levels of nurses working in the Portuguese national network of palliative care. We evaluated the contribution of personal, work, and COVID-19 variables in three burnout subclasses: personal, work, and patient-related. A cross-sectional, exploratory, and quantitative design was employed and participants were sampled using convenience and snowball technique. An online survey was conducted and 153 nurses participated in our study. Socio-demographic characterization was conducted, levels of burnout and determinants were explored through multiple linear regression models for its three dimensions. High levels of personal, working, and patient burnout were present in 71 (46%), 68 (44%), and 33 nurses (22%), respectively. Most of them agreed that COVID-19 had an impact on their activities. Significant personal and work related burnout factors found were specialization in palliative care, self-perceived health status, unit type, weekly hours of work, and allocation to COVID-19 units. Gender was found to be a significant factor in patient-related burnout. There is a high level of burnout among nurses working in the Portuguese national network of palliative care. Measures for identification and mitigation of burnout are necessary to protect health care professionals.

Human-robotic interaction system are increasingly becoming integrated into industrial, commercial and emergency service agencies. It is critical that human operators understand and trust automation when these systems support and even make important decisions. The following study focused on human-in-loop telerobotic system performing a reconnaissance operation. Twenty-four subjects were divided into groups based on level of automation (Low-Level Automation (LLA), and High-Level Automation (HLA)). Results indicated a significant difference between low and high word level of control in hit rate when permanent error occurred. In the LLA group, the type of error had a significant effect on the hit rate. In general, the high level of automation was better than the low level of automation, especially if it was more reliable, suggesting that subjects in the HLA group could rely on the automatic implementation to perform the task more effectively and more accurately.

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are prevalent in dental hygienists. Although engineering controls and ergonomic training is available, it is unclear why this intransigent problem continues. One possible barrier is that a comprehensive, standardized protocol for evaluating dental hygiene work does not exist. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to generate a valid and reliable observational protocol for the assessment of dental hygiene work. METHODS: An iterative process was used to establish and refine an ecologically valid video acquisition and observation protocol to assess key activities, tasks, and performance components of dental hygiene work. RESULTS: Good inter-rater reliability was achieved across all variables when the final coding scheme was completed by three independent raters. CONCLUSIONS: This work provides an exemplar of the process required to generate a comprehensive protocol for evaluating the work components of a particular job, and provides standardized nomenclature for use by scientists and practitioners interested in understanding and addressing the pervasive issue of work-related disorders in dental hygienists.
