An experimental study is presented of the bonded birefringent strip as a means of observing transient deformations on the surfaces of opaque bodies. The particular situation investigated consists of a birefringent sheet bonded to a metal rod in which a strain pulse is initiated by a small explosive charge. Major emphasis is placed upon the study of two problems associated with the use of the technique. The first is the development of a reliable method of interpreting the observed photoelastic fringe patterns. The second is an evaluation of the influence the sheet has on the strain pulse in the bar. Satisfactory agreement is obtained between the strain profile at the rod-sheet interface determined by using a birefringent strip and the profile given by resistance-wire strain gages.

Detonation chambers (either mobile or fixed) are used worldwide for a wide range of applications. At present, a 1/7 scale model of a 1 ton detonation chamber is available for extended testing in Belgium. The chamber is a single wall cylindrical vessel with semi-elliptical ends. Each time an explosive charge is fired in the vessel, that vessel is submitted to a number of deformation cycles. A series of strain gages measure the deformation of the vessel walls. Experimental peak strains and vibration frequency can be compared to predicted values based on simple formulas. Measured values are reasonably close to the estimated values. The influence of the shape of the charge is studied. The shape has an important influence on the chamber response. For a fixed charge mass, a spherical charge causes less deformation than a cylindrical charge and is therefore advantageous from a fatigue point of view.

The infiltration of a light nonaqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) into an unsaturated porous medium will result in varying amounts of water, LNAPL, and air within the soil voids. A simple and reliable method of determining the percent saturation of each fluid is needed to analyze laboratory infiltration experiments. This note reviews the available methodologies for determining the oil content in porous media and presents an experimental study of a simple and reliable method for determining water and oil contents in an unsaturated fine to medium sand.
