There are multivariable systems which have free motions dominated by a limited number of clearly separable modes. In some cases it is possible to specifically control these modes, thereby improving overall control of the system. This paper is a discussion of when and how modal control may be applied.

On Directional Change and Anti-Windup Compensation in Multivariable Control SystemsThe paper presents a novel description of the interplay between the windup phenomenon and directional change in controls for multivariable systems (including plants with an uneven number of inputs and outputs), usually omitted in the literature. The paper also proposes a new classification of anti-windup compensators with respect to the method of generating the constrained control signal.

Some properties of Bristol's “relative gain array” are discussed and it is shown that these lead to the selection of simple structures for multivariable control systems. A design method based on this approach helps the design engineer rapidly to select suitable structures for detailed evaluation.
