The need to produce oil and gas in water depths beyond the physical and economical limits of fixed platforms and pipelines has led to the development of a feasible concept for an articulated multiline flexible marine production riser system. This paper covers the history of the concept development from inception to readiness for engineering design and fabrication of a prototype test model.

Cepu Block located between Centre Jawa and East Java. It is known as a rich block because it has a source of oil and gas. Block Cepu, where geographically located between three districts, Blora (Centre Java), Bojonegoro and Tuban (East Java) has given a contribution to national budget (APBN) and respected local government budget (APBD). About 33 per cent of the land of Cepu Block is owned by Blora, 67 per cent owned by Bojonegoro and the rest is owned by Tuban. Ironically, however, although 33 per cent of the Block belongs to Blora, the district does not receive any financial income from the oil exploration. There is no resources share fund from Cepu Block. Moreover, the district has to deal with the negative impacts of exploration activities at the Block Cepu such as damaging of infrastructure, environmental pollution, and social disturbance. Blora District has protested to Centre Government, but so far there is no outcome. Centre Government asked that this problem should be studied first. The central government argue that if it is approved, then there will be domino impact: other districts will do the same like Blora. Blora district is struggling to get equality in resources share fund (dana bagi hasil). Efforts have done, seminars and workshops, lobby to DPD (Upper House) to find a solution. Now the district government is proposing judicial review to constitution court. This research examines the history of Block Cepu. It reveals the history of the block from the colonial era up to the reformation era. Further, the research aims to know how the tension between local government (Blora Government) and central government regarding Blok Cepu oil exploration. The research suggests that there is injustice in the distribution of revenue from the exploration and it is understandable if Blora district government struggle to get proportional revenue sharing.

This chapter is concerned with the role of oil and gas in the economic development of the global economy. It focuses on the context in which established and newer oil and gas producers in developing countries must frame their policies to optimize the benefits of such resources. It outlines a history of the issue over the last twenty-five years. It considers oil and gas as factor inputs, their role in global trade, the role of oil prices in the macroeconomy and the impact of the geopolitics of oil and gas. It then considers various conventional views of the future of oil and gas in the primary energy mix. Finally, it challenges the drivers behind these conventional views of the future with an emphasis on why they may prove to be different from what is expected and how this may change the context in which producers must frame their policy responses.

The “Warman Design and Build Competition”, running across Australasian Universities, is now in its 26th year in 2013. Presented in this paper is a brief history of the competition, documenting the objectives, yearly scenarios, key contributors and champion Universities since its beginning in 1988. Assuming the competition has reached the majority of mechanical and related discipline engineering students in that time, it is fair to say that this competition, as a vehicle of the National Committee on Engineering Design, has served to shape Australasian engineering education in an enduring way. The philosophy of the Warman Design and Build Competition and some of the challenges of running it are described in this perspective by its coordinator since 2003. In particular, the need is for the competition to work effectively across a wide range of student group ability. Not every group engaging with the competition will be competitive nationally, yet all should learn positively from the experience. Reported also in this paper is the collective feedback from the campus organizers in respect to their use of the competition as an educational experience in their classrooms. Each University participating uses the competition differently with respect to student assessment and the support students receive. However, all academic campus organizer responses suggest that the competition supports their own and their institutional learning objectives very well. While the project scenarios have varied widely over the years, the intent to challenge 2nd year university (predominantly mechanical) engineering students with an open-ended statement of requirements in a practical and experiential exercise has been a constant. Students are faced with understanding their opportunity and their client’s value system as expressed in a scoring algorithm. They are required to conceive, construct and demonstrate their device with limited prior knowledge and experience, and the learning outcomes clearly impact their appreciation for teamwork, leadership and product realization.

Pipeline bundle system consisting of carrier pipe, sleeve pipe and internal flowlines offers innovative solution for the infield transportation of oil and gas. Due to its features, pipeline bundle offers a couple of advantages over conventional pipeline in particular for cases where multi-flowlines and high thermal performance are of great interests. The main benefits and advantages of such system include excellent thermal performance to prevent wax formation and hydrates, multiple bundled flowlines, mechanical and corrosion protection, potential reuse, etc. With the developments of offshore oil and gas industries, more and more hydrocarbon resources are being explored and discovered from shallow to deep water. Pipeline bundle system can be a smart solution for certain applications, which can be safe and cost effective solution. The objective of this paper is to overview pipeline bundle technology, outline detailed engineering design issue and procedure. Focus is given to its potential application in offshore for infield transportation. Engineering design principles and procedures for pipeline bundle system has been highlighted. A companion paper addressed the details of the construction and installation of pipeline bundle system. An example is given at the end of this paper to demonstrate the pipeline bundle system concept and its application.

The Vibration Analysis and Deviation Concept (VIDEC), a computerized steam propulsion plant performance monitoring and failure prediction system, is presently operating on a new containership. This interim report is an attempt to document the history of this system from the concept development phase through fabrication, software design, in-plant simulation, shipyard installation, and initial shipboard operation. A brief system description including system concepts is presented. The paper concentrates on the system implementation, installation, and initial operation. A discussion is presented of types of data and concepts being evaluated and the methods of evaluation being used. Illustrations and tables of pertinent data are also included. The paper closes with a discussion of the VIDEC system and concept as they relate to other possible shipboard automation systems and programs. Finally, conclusions and recommendations are presented.

The present paper describes the DIONISOS software package (Beicip-Technologies), where the reconstruction of the accumulation conditions and facies modeling of sand reservoirs Yu10, Yu9, Yu8, Yu7 and Yu6 of the Tyumenskaya Formation and carbonaceous-clay members acting as fluid seals within the Gerasimovskoye oil and gas condensate field located in the south of the Parabel district of the Tomsk region. Reconstructions of facies environments make it possible to consistently restore conditions and create a general principled model of the accumulation of sandy-argillaceous deposits of the Middle Jurassic PP in a given territory. Polyfacies deposits of the Bajocian are represented by sands of distributaries and stream-mouth bars, underwater slope of delta, above-water and underwater delta plains, argillaceous-carbonaceous sediments of floodplain lakes, bogs, marshes and lagoons, clays formed at the border of the above-water and underwater deltaic plains, silt deposits of above-water and underwater delta plains, prodelta clays. As a result of the 3D facies model construction, it is shown that the subcontinental sedimentary environments of sand reservoirs Yu10–Yu8 are replaced by deltaic and floodplain-lacustrine-boggy ones, and the formation of Yu7–Yu6 reservoirs occurs in conditions of coastal plain, periodically flooded by the sea. In total, 5 lithotypes of sand deposits have been identified, 1 – argillaceous-carbonaceous, 2 – argillaceous and 1 – silty. Computer facies 3D modeling of the sand bodies assemblage (hydrocarbon reservoirs) of the Bajocian age for the Gerasimovskoye oil and gas condensate field has been performed.

The Huanghua Depression is located in the north-centre of Bohai Bay Basin, which is a rift basin developed in the Mesozoic over the basement of the Huabei Platform, China. Permo-Carboniferous source rocks were formed in the Huanghua Depression, which has experienced multiple complicated tectonic alterations with inhomogeneous uplift, deformation, buried depth and magma effect. As a result, the hydrocarbon generation evolution of Permo-Carboniferous source rocks was characterized by discontinuity and grading. On the basis of a detailed study on tectonic-burial history, the paper worked on the burial history, heating history and hydrocarbon generation history of Permo-Carboniferous source rocks in the Huanghua Depression combined with apatite fission track testing and fluid inclusion analyses using the EASY% Ro numerical simulation. The results revealed that their maturity evolved in stages with multiple hydrocarbon generations. In this paper, we clarified the tectonic episode, the strength of hydrocarbon generation and the time–spatial distribution of hydrocarbon regeneration. Finally, an important conclusion was made that the hydrocarbon regeneration of Permo-Carboniferous source rocks occurred in the Late Cenozoic and the subordinate depressions were brought forward as advantage zones for the depth exploration of Permo-Carboniferous oil and gas in the middle-northern part of the Huanghua Depression, Bohai Bay Basin, China.

The possibilities of Geothermy as a geophysical method are studied to solve forecast and prospecting problems of Petroleum Geology of the Arctic regions and the Paleozoic of Western Siberia. Deep heat flow of Yamal fields, whose oil and gas potential is associated with the Jurassic-Cretaceous formations, and the fields of Tomsk Region, whose geological section contents deposits in the Paleozoic, is studied. The method of paleotemperature modeling was used to calculate the heat flow density from the base of a sedimentary section (by solving the inverse problem of Geothermy). The schematization and mapping of the heat flow were performed, taking into account experimental determinations of the parameter. Besides, the correlation of heat flow features with the localization of deposits was revealed. The conceptual and factual basis of research includes the tectonosedimentary history of sedimentary cover, the Mesozoic-Cenozoic climatic temperature course and the history of cryogenic processes, as well as lithologic and stratigraphic description of the section, results of well testing, thermometry and vitrinite reflectivity data of 20 deep wells of Yamal and 37 wells of Ostanino group of fields of Tomsk region. It was stated that 80 % of known Yamal deposits correlate with anomalous features of the heat flow. Bovanenkovskoe and Arkticheskoe fields are located in positive anomaly zones. 75 % of fields of Ostanino group relate to anomalous features of the heat flow. It is shown that the fields, which are characterized by existence of commercial deposits in the Paleozoic, are associated with the bright gradient zone of the heat flow. The forecast of commercial inflows in the Paleozoic for Pindzhinskoe, Mirnoe and Rybalnoe fields is given. The correlation between the intensity of naftidogenesis and the lateral inhomogeneity of the deep heat flow is characterized as a probable fundamental pattern for Western Siberia.
