Variables Influencing Degradation of SiC Abrasive Papers
Using a reciprocating friction machine in which different loads and different speeds for each stroke, the rate of detached grits separated from cementing resin base, metal removal rate and mean sizes of detached grits were investigated under various friction conditions. The degradation of 600-grade SiC abrasive papers were discussed in terms of fatigue deformation of cementing resin. Main results are: 1) Under the reciprocating friction, the rate of detached grits increased in proportion to frictional force amplitude under low load condition. 2) In comparison between one-way friction and the reciprocating, higher wear rate were obtained under the reciprocating. It is considered to be a difference of fatigue strength of the resin for completely reversed stress and pulsating stress.
