On the Transmissibility of Short Porous Journal Bearings

The transmissibility characteristics of oil-lubricated porous journal bearings are analytically determined for a rigid rotor mounted in both the horizontal and the vertical positions. The bearing model used in this investigation is the short-bearing approximation with isothermal conditions and a 180-degree cavitated film. All data presented are for a range of unbalances that may commonly be encountered in practice. These data show that operating conditions exist for which porous journal bearings exhibit transmissibility characteristics that are superior to those of corresponding solid journal bearings. All data presented for porous bearings were obtained by using a bearing with a wall thickness-to-length ratio of 0.2.

A theoretical analysis has been carried out to determine the stability of rigid rotor supported on two symmetrical finite two-layered porous oil journal bearings. The stability curves have been drawn for different eccentricity ratios and Sommerfeld numbers. The effect of bearing feeding parameter, L/D ratio on the stability is also investigated. This paper also deals with a theoretical investigation of stability using a non-linear transient method. This analysis gives the journal centre locus and from this the system stability can be determined. With the help of graphics, several trajectories of the journal centre have been obtained for different operating conditions. Finally a comparison between single-layered porous bearing and the two-layered porous bearing is presented here.

The compressible Reynolds Equation under isothermal conditions was solved for finite elliptical and 3-lobe bearings with the load vector acting in any arbitrary direction over the full range of 360 deg. Envelopes of minimum and maximum eccentricity for a given set of operating conditions are provided, the first to yield maximum load capacity, and the second to assist stability by a choice of the highest possible ε. Some values of the spring and damping forces are also given and it is shown that in comparison with conventional bearings, the non-circular designs offer a significant advance in stiffness, particularly for low ε, when instability is most often encountered.

The results of a survey conducted on an experimental system consisting of a rigid rotor supported on two radial bearings each with five tilting pads is presented. In particular, the system was set up in order to assess the dynamic behaviour of the bearing in unusual operating conditions. The response of the bearing to different unbalance values was determined after acquiring and analysing the orbits described by the journal axis for assigned unbalance values in different operating conditions. Analysis of the results shows some particular operating features that were not entirely predicted by the theoretical model and which may give rise to malfunctions in the rotor-tilting pad bearings system. The tests were carried out in the rotor dynamics laboratory of the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Meccanica per l'Energetica at the University of Naples.

Floating ring bearings are compared to single film journal bearings over the full range from laminar to turbulent conditions in the films. Isothermal conditions are assumed. Assuming each type carries the same external load and operates at the same eccentricity ratio as determined by the Capacity Number, reductions in the power loss required range from 31 to 64 percent when the clearance ratio C0/(C1 + C2) is held constant and the length is shortened, and from 42 to 63 percent when the length ratio L0/L is held constant and the clearance ratio C0/(C1 + C2) is reduced. Equilibrium ring speeds range from ω0/3 to 0.45 ω0.

This paper studies the bifurcation of a rigid rotor supported by a gas film bearing. A time-dependent mathematical model for gas journal bearings is presented. The finite differences method and the Successive Over Relation (S.O.R) method are employed to solve the Reynolds’ equation. The system state trajectory, Poincare´ maps, power spectra, and bifurcation diagrams are used to analyze the dynamic behavior of the rotor center in the horizontal and vertical directions under different operating conditions. The analysis shows how the existence of a complex dynamic behavior comprising periodic and subharmonic response of the rotor center. This paper shows how the dynamic behavior of this type of system varies with changes in rotor mass and rotational velocity. The results of this study contribute to a further understanding of the nonlinear dynamics of gas film rotor-bearing systems.

Masdar is developing several carbon capture projects from power plants, smelters, steel works, industrial facilities and oil and gas processing plants in Abu Dhabi in a phased series of projects. Captured CO2 will be transported in a new national CO2 pipeline network with a nominal capacity of 20×106 T/y to oil reservoirs where it will be injected for reservoir management and sequestration. Design of the pipeline network considered three primary factors in the selection of wall thickness and toughness, (a) steady and transient operating conditions, (b) prevention of longitudinal ductile fractures and (c) optimization of total project owning and operating costs. The paper explains how the three factors affect wall thickness and toughness. It sets out code requirements that must be satisfied when choosing wall thickness and gives details of how to calculate toughness to prevent propagation of long ductile fracture in CO2 pipelines. It then uses cost optimization to resolve contention between the different requirements and arrive at a safe and economical pipeline design. The design work selected a design pressure of 24.5 MPa, well above the critical point for CO2 and much higher than is normally seen in conventional oil and gas pipelines. Despite its high operating pressure, the proposed network will be one of the safest pipeline systems in the world today.

Abstract In this paper, the dynamics of tilting pad journal bearings with four and eight pads are studied and compared experimentally and numerically. The experiments are performed on a rigid vertical rotor supported by two identical bearings. Two sets of experiments are carried out under similar test setup. One set is performed on a rigid rotor with two four-pad bearings, while the other is on a rigid rotor with two eight-pad bearings. The dynamic properties of the two bearing types are compared with each other by studying the unbalance response of the system at different rotor speeds. Numerically, the test rig is modeled as a rigid rotor and the bearing coefficients are calculated based on Navier-Stokes equation. A nonlinear bearing model is developed and used in the steady state response simulation. The measured and simulated displacement and force orbits show similar patterns for both bearing types. Compared to the measurement, the simulated mean value and range (peak-to-peak amplitude) of the bearing force deviate with a maximum of 16 % and 38 %, respectively. It is concluded that, unlike the eight-pad TPJB, the four-pad TPJB excite the system at the third and fifth-order frequencies, which are due to the number of pads, and the amplitudes of these frequencies increase with the rotor speed.

A theoretical analysis is presented for the study of pneumatic instability for a rigid rotor supported in externally pressurized porous gas journal bearings. The analysis is based on a first-order perturbation with respect to the amplitude of dynamic displacement of rotor. The variation of threshold mass parameter with feeding parameter is shown. In addition, the effects of supply pressure, eccentricity ratio, L/D ratio, and porosity parameter are investigated and presented in the form of graphs.
