Endurance and Failure Characteristic of Main-Shaft Jet Engine Bearing at 3 × 106 DN

Groups of thirty 120-mm bore angular-contact ball bearings were endurance tested at a speed of 12 000 and 25 000 rpm (1.44 × 106 and 3.0 × 106 DN) and a thrust load of 66 721 N (5000 lb). The bearings were manufactured from a single heat of VIM-VAR AISI M-50 steel. At 1.44 × 106 and 3.0 × 106 DN, 84 483 and 74 800 bearing test hours were accumulated, respectively. Test results were compared with similar bearings made from CVM AISI M-50 steel run under the same conditions. Bearing lives at speeds of 3 × 106 DN with the VIM-VAR AISI M-50 steel were nearly equivalent to those obtained at lower speeds. A combined processing and material life factor of 44 was found for VIM-VAR AISI M-50 steel. Continuous running after a spall has occurred at 3.0 × 106 DN can result in a destructive fracture of the bearing inner race.

A parametric study was performed with 120-mm bore angular-contact ball bearings having a nominal contact angle of 20 deg. The bearings either had an inner- or an outer-race land riding cage. Lubrication was by recirculating oil jets. The oil jets either had a single or dual orifice. Thrust load, speed, and lubricant flow rate were varied. Test results were compared with those previously reported and obtained from bearings of the same design which were under-race lubricated but run under the same conditions. Jet lubricated ball bearings were limited to speeds less than 2.5 × 106 DN. Bearings having inner-race land riding cages produced lower temperatures than bearings with outer-race land riding cages. For a given lubricant flow rate dual orifice jets produced lower bearing temperatures than single orifice jets. However, under-race lubrication produced under all conditions of operation lower bearing temperatures with no apparent bearing speed limitation.

Nonlinear vibration analysis of an elastically deformable shaft supported on two lubricated angular contact ball bearings is reported herein considering six-degrees of freedom (6-DOF) and waviness on races and balls. This is an extension work of the investigation published by the authors Babu, C. K., Tandon, N., and Pandey, R. K., 2012, “Vibration Modeling of a Rigid Rotor Supported on the Lubricated Angular Contact Ball Bearings Considering Six Degree of Freedom and Waviness on Balls and Races,” ASME J. Vib. Acoust., 134, p. 011006. Elastic deformation of shaft, frictional moment, and waviness on races and balls have been incorporated in the model for the vibration investigations of rotor's CG. Two noded 3D Timoshenko beam element having 6-DOF has been employed in the computation of the shaft's deformation. Governing equations with appropriate boundary conditions have been solved using 4th order Runge–Kutta method. It is observed that vibration amplitude enhances considerably after incorporating the elastic deformation in comparison to the amplitude achieved using rigid rotor model approach. Moreover, the influence of outer race's radial waviness is large on the amplitudes of vibrations in comparison to radial waviness of inner race. However, it is worth noting here that in case of rigid rotor model the presence of radial waviness on inner race yields high amplitudes of vibrations.

Outer ring tilted or offset axially, caused by improperly fixing relatively to the inner ring, will produce remarkable systematic errors in measured radial clearance of a bearing. Analyzing their effects in detail on the results of measured radial clearances, they are found to be the main sources affecting the measurement accuracy. Measures for removing them are proposed. Based on these, a novel type of instrument for measurement of radial clearances of ball bearings has been developed. It could avoid the two kinds of systematic errors. The measuring principle, structures and working procedures of the instrument are presented. Test results show that the test time is less than 15 seconds per a part and the indication stability is between ±1.0 µm.

This paper is concerned with the experimental investigation of vibration in aircraft jet-engine rotating compressor disks of two different configurations. The blades in the first configuration were small, with relatively low mass, and had an insignificant effect on the disk vibration except for centrifugal loading. The second configuration had relatively large blades which resulted in combined blade and disk modes. The test techniques, test results, and examples of some known phenomenon as they occur in lightweight aircraft jet-engine disks are discussed.
