Performance and Flow Regime of Annular Diffusers With Axial Turbomachine Discharge Inlet Conditions

An experimental investigation of the flow regime and the performance of straight-core annular diffusers operating immediately downstream of an axial compressor was carried out. Features of the compressor’s discharge including the size of the blade wakes, the streamwise relative turbulence intensity and the periodic streamwise component of velocity induced by the rotor blades were studied. The periodic streamwise velocity component was found to be quite small and it decayed as the flow proceeded through the diffusers. The relative turbulence intensities were comparatively large and increased along the diffusers. The statistical distribution of the stall periods for the diffuser with transitory stall had characteristics similar to those found for two-dimensional diffusers.

The flow behavior in rib-roughened ducts is influenced by the inclination of ribs and the effect is investigated in the present study by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The local flow structures between two adjacent ribs were measured. The Reynolds number was fixed at 5800. The flow field description was based on the PIV results in planes both parallel and perpendicular to the ribbed walls at various locations. The rib angle to the main flow direction was varied as 30 deg, 45 deg, 60 deg and 90 deg. The ribs induce three dimensional flow fields. The flow separation and reattachment between adjacent ribs are clearly observed. In addition, the inclined ribs are found to alter the spanwise distribution of the streamwise velocity component. The streamwise velocity component has its highest values at the upstream end of the ribs, and decreases continuously to its lowest values at the downstream end. Strong secondary flow motion occurs over the entire duct cross section for the inclined ribs. The flow structures between two consecutive ribs show that the fluid flows along the ribs from one end of the ribs to the other end, and then turns back at the transverse center. Downwash and upwash flows are observed at the upstream end and downstream end of the ribs, respectively.

The temporal evolution of small three-dimensional disturbances on viscous flows between parallel walls is studied. The initial-value problem is formally solved by using Fourier–Laplace transform techniques. The streamwise velocity component is obtained as the solution of a forced problem. As a consequence of the three-dimensionality, a resonant response is possible, leading to algebraic growth for small times. It occurs when the eigenvalues of the Orr–Sommerfeld equation coincide with the eigenvalues of the homogeneous operator for the streamwise velocity component. The resonance has been investigated numerically for plane Couette flow. The phase speed of the resonant waves equals the average mean velocity. The wavenumber combination that leads to the largest amplitude corresponds to structures highly elongated in the streamwise direction. The maximum amplitude, and the time to reach this maximum, scale with the Reynolds number. The aspect ratio of the most rapidly growing wave increases with the Reynolds number, with its spanwise wavelength approaching a constant value of about 3 channel heights.

Results from an experimental investigation of flow field generated by pitched and yawed jets discharging from a flat plate into a cross-flow are presented. The circular jet was pitched at α = 20° and 45° and yawed between β = 0° and 90° in increments of 15°. The measurements were performed with two X-wires providing all three components of velocity and turbulence intensity. These data were obtained at downstream locations of x = 3, 5, 10 and 20, where the distance x, normalized by the jet diameter, is measured from the center of the orifice. Data for all configurations were acquired at a momentum-flux ratio J = 8. Additionally, for selected angles and locations, surveys were conducted for J = 1.5, 4, and 20. As expected, the jet penetration is found to be higher at larger α. With increasing β the jet spreads more. The rate of reduction of peak streamwise vorticity, ωxmax, with the downstream distance is significantly lessened at higher β but is found to be practically independent of α. Thus, at the farthest measurement station x = 20, ωxmax is about five times larger for β = 75° compared to the levels at β = 0°. Streamwise velocity within the jet-vortex structure is found to depend on the parameter J. At J = 1.5 and 4, ‘wake-like’ velocity profiles are observed. In comparison, a ‘jet-like’ overshoot is present at higher J.

The streamwise velocity component is studied in fully developed turbulent channel flow for two very rough surfaces and a smooth surface at comparable Reynolds numbers. One rough surface comprises sparse and isotropic grit with a highly non-Gaussian distribution. The other is a uniform mesh consisting of twisted rectangular elements which form a diamond pattern. The mean roughness heights (±) the standard deviation) are, respectively, about 76(±42) and 145(±150) wall units. The flow is shown to be two-dimensional and fully developed up to the fourth-order moment of velocity. The mean velocity profile over the grit surface exhibits self-similarity (in the form of a logarithmic law) within the limited range of 0.04≤y/h≤0.06, but the profile over the mesh surface does not, even though the mean velocity deficit and higher moments (up to the fourth order) all exhibit outer scaling over both surfaces. The distinction between self-similarity and outer similarity is clarified and the importance of the former is explained. The wake strength is shown to increase slightly over the grit surface but decrease over the mesh surface. The latter result is contrary to recent measurements in rough-wall boundary layers. Single- and two-point velocity correlations reveal the presence of large-scale streamwise structures with circulation in the plane orthogonal to the mean velocity. Spanwise correlation length scales are significantly larger than corresponding ones for both internal and external smooth-wall flows.

An experimental investigation of plane turbulent jets in bounded fluid layers is presented. The development of the jet is regular up to a distance from the orifice of approximately twice the depth of the fluid layer. From there on to a distance of about ten times the depth, the flow is dominated by secondary currents. The velocity distribution over a cross-section of the jet becomes three-dimensional and the jet undergoes a constriction in the midplane and a widening near the bounding surfaces. Beyond a distance of approximately ten times the depth of the bounded fluid layer the secondary currents disappear and the jet starts to meander around its centreplane. Large vortical structures develop with axes perpendicular to the bounding surfaces of the fluid layer. With increasing distance the size of these structures increases by pairing. These features of the jet are associated with the development of quasi two-dimensional turbulence. It is shown that the secondary currents and the meandering do not significantly affect the spreading of the jet. The quasi-two-dimensional turbulence, however, developing in the meandering jet, significantly influences the mixing of entrained fluid.

Results are presented from a towing-tank experiment conducted in order to document the effects of waves on the wake of a surface-piercing body. A unique, simple model geometry is utilized which makes it possible to isolate and identify the most important features of the wave-induced effects. Measurements were made for three wave-steepness conditions: zero, medium, and large. The effects of the waves for the latter two conditions are shown to be significant. In particular, the variations of the external-flow pressure gradients cause acceleration and deceleration phases of the streamwise velocity component and alternating direction of the crossflow, which results in large oscillations of the displacement thickness and wake centerplane velocities as compared to the zero-steepness condition. Remarkably, the wake displays a greater response, that is, a bias with regard to favorable as compared to adverse pressure gradients. The measurements are compared and close agreement is demonstrated with results from Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes calculations. Additional calculations are presented, including laminar-flow results, which aid in explicating the characteristics of the near and intermediate wake, the periodic nature of the far wake, and wave-induced separation. Previously, experimental and computational results were presented for the boundary-layer region.

After a shaft failure the compression system of a gas turbine is likely to surge due to the heavy vibrations induced on the engine after the breakage. Unlike at any other conditions of operation, compressor surge during a shaft over-speed event is regarded as desirable as it limits the air flow across the engine and hence the power available to accelerate the free turbine. It is for this reason that the proper prediction of the engine performance during a shaft over-speed event claims for an accurate modelling of the compressor operation at reverse flow conditions. The present study investigates the ability of the existent two dimensional algorithms to simulate the compressor performance in backflow conditions. Results for a three stage axial compressor at reverse flow were produced and compared against stage by stage experimental data published by Gamache. The research shows that due to the strong radial fluxes present over the blades, two dimensional approaches are inadequate to provide satisfactory results. Three dimensional effects and inaccuracies are accounted for by the introduction of a correction parameter that is a measure of the pressure loss across the blades. Such parameter is tailored for rotors and stators and enables the satisfactory agreement between calculations and experiments in a stage by stage basis. The paper concludes with the comparison of the numerical results with the experimental data supplied by Day on a four stage axial compressor.
