Refueling system components for LMFBR’s require a high degree of accuracy because of the need to function remotely without visual access. Also, they must have proven reliability to assure minimum plant outage for reactor refueling. The experience gained in the development of the in-vessel handling machine (IVHM) for the Fast Flux Test Facility reactor dramatically indicates that construction, testing, and modification of the design are an essential part of the development of this type of equipment. It is suggested that design and development schedules for this type of equipment must allow for production and testing of prototypes to assure that functional requirements of plant equipment will be achieved. The money spent on such testing must be considered as an investment rather than as a direct cost, with the return on investment being high reliability and consequently high plant availability. The IVHM is described briefly, and some specific lessons learned during prototype testing are presented.

The article is devoted to the assessment of potential investment risks of the pharmaceutical company “R-Pharm” JSC with the aim of identifying the highest priority risks and developing methods for minimizing them. The relevance of the study is determined by the fact that the pharmaceutical business is characterized by a high degree of social orientation and annually invests $ 140 billion in the development of production and research, which determines the need for a risk-based approach to ensure the return on investment. The subject of this article is the investment risks of pharmaceutical companies, and the subject of research is the domestic pharmaceutical company “R-Pharm”. In order to assess the potential investment risks of “R-Pharm” JSC, the authors used elements of simulation modeling and system analysis. The proposed methods to minimize key investment risks are aimed at improving the efficiency of investment activities and is recommended as an element of the strategic planning of the company.

Many environments require humans and robots operating together to accomplish complex and dangerous tasks, but technology-centered designs often support robot navigation but not the mission goals of the organization using the robot. Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) is a particularly valuable domain to identify general functional requirements for effective HRI, and our purpose in this paper is to demonstrate how a CSE approach can lead to valuable design guidelines that more effectively support decision making within Human-Robot teams. Our analysis of HRI in USAR lead us to identify several important guidelines for supporting effective coordination for Human-Robot teams: including (i) enable individual problem holders to have direct control over point-of-view to facilitate active information seeking, and (ii) create common reference frames on shared imagery so different problem holders can remotely coordinate information and actions. Designs based on these guidelines will support a broad class of coordinated activities between team members.

This article introduces Proxy Technology Assessment (PTA) as a methodological approach that can widen the scope of virtual world and game research. Studies of how people experience virtual worlds and games often focus on individual in-world or in-game experiences. However, people do not perceive these worlds and games in isolation. They are embedded within a social context that has strongly intertwined online and offline components. Studying virtual experiences while accounting for these interconnections calls for new methodological approaches. PTA answers this call.Combining several methods, PTA can be used to investigate how new technology may impact and settle within people's everyday life (Pierson et al., 2006). It involves introducing related devices or applications, available today, to users in their natural setting and studying the context-embedded practices they alter or evoke. This allows researchers to detect social and functional requirements to improve the design of new technologies. These requirements, like the practices under investigation, do not stop at the outlines of a magic circle (cf. Huizinga, 1955).We will start this article by contextualizing and defining PTA. Next, we will describe the practical implementation of PTA. Each step of the procedure will be illustrated with examples and supplemented with lessons learned from two interdisciplinary scientific projects, Hi-Masquerade and Teleon, concerned with how people perceive and use virtual worlds and games respectively.

Potential mitigation strategies for preventing stress corrosion cracking (SCC) failures in CANDU fuel cladding that are based on lessons learned on both domestic and international fronts are discussed in this paper. Although SCC failures have not been a major concern in CANDU reactors in recent decades, they may resurface at higher burnup for conventional fuels or with nonconventional fuels that are currently being investigated, such as MOX or thoria-based fuels. The motivation of this work is to provide the foundation for considering possible remedies for SCC failures. Three candidate remedies are discussed, namely improved fabrication methods for fuel appendages, barrier-liner cladding, and fuel doping. In support of this effort, recent advances in experimental characterization methods are described—methods that have been successfully used in non-nuclear materials that can be used to further elucidate SCC behaviour in CANDU fuel. The overall objective is to outline a path forward for characterizing material behaviour as an essential part of investigating remedies to SCC failure. This will allow increased fuel discharge burnup, maximum linear power, and plant manoeuvrability, while maintaining a high degree of reliability.

Abstract Objective The main purpose of the trial was to test if a brief trauma focused cognitive-behavior therapy (prolonged exposure; PE) provided within 72h after a trauma could be effective in decreasing the incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), replicating and extending findings from an earlier trial. After a pilot study (N=10), which indicated feasible and deliverable study procedures and interventions, we subsequently launched an RCT with a target sample size of 352 participants randomized to either three sessions PE or non-directive support. Due to an unforeseen major reorganization at the hospital, the RCT was discontinued after 32 included participants. Results In this paper, we highlight obstacles and lessons learned from our feasibility work, relevant for preventive psychological interventions for PTSD in emergency settings. One important finding was the high degree of attrition: only 78% and 34% respectively came back for the two months and six-months assessments. There were also difficulties in reaching eligible patients immediately after the event. Based on our experiences, we envisage that alternative models of implementation might overcome these obstacles, for example, with remote delivery of both assessments and treatment, combined with multiple recruitment procedures. Lessons learned from this terminated RCT are discussed in depth.

In the previous work, G.M. Sternik and S.G. Sternik justified the options for the method of assessing the average current annual return on investment in residential real estate development, depending on the nature and content of the initial data on the costs contained in the sources of information (construction costs or total investment costs). Based on the analysis of the composition of the elements of development costs used in various data sources, we corrected the coefficients that allowed us to move from the assessment of the current annual return on investment in development in relation to the cost (full estimated cost) of construction to the assessment of the current annual return on investment in relation to the total investment costs. This calculation method was tested on the example of the housing market inMoscow. As a result, we concluded it is possible its use for investment management in the housing market. In this article, based on G.M. Sternik and S.G. Sternik’s methodology for assessing the return on investment into the development, and taking also into account the increase of information openness of the real estate market, we improved the calculation formulas, using new sources of the initial data, and recalculated the average market return on investment into the development of residential real estate in the Moscow region according to the data available for 2014–2017. We concluded that, since 2015, the average market return on investment takes negative values, i.e. the volume of investment in construction exceeds the revenue from sales in the primary market. However, in the second half of 2017, the indicator has increased to positive values, which was due to a greater extent of the decrease in the volume of residential construction in the region. The data obtained by us, together with the improved method of calculations, allow predicting with high reliability the potential of the development of the regional markets of primary housing for the purpose of investment and state planning of housing construction programs.
