A diameter gage is described which has been used to obtain true stress-true strain data at elevated temperatures. The device is capable of continuously and automatically measuring diameter of a tensile specimen to a true strain as high as 0.90–0.95. Data are presented which demonstrate the ability of the gage to identify conditions of non-uniform deformation behavior.

Using thermal simulator (Gleeble 1500D), the thermal deformation behavior of Cu-P weathering steel containing Cr, Ni, Mo under the conditions of various deformation temperatures and strain rates was studied. The true stress-true strain curves at various thermal deformation conditions were got, and the thermal deformation equation was established. Then the microstructure features of the steel under various deformation temperatures and strain rates were analyzed when the true strains were same. The results show that with the same strains and strain rates, the higher the deformation temperature, the easier the recrystallization occurs, and the greater the size of the recrystal grains. And with the same strains and deformation temperatures, the lower the strain rate, the easier the recrystallization occurs, and the greater the proportion and size of the recrystal grains. The effects of temperature and strain rate on the thermal deformation-behavior of Cu-P weathering steel were studied by using thermal simulator. And the true stress-true strain curves at different thermal deformation conditions were got. Then the features of the microstructure of the steel under different temperatures and strain rates were analyzed. The results show that with the same deformation dimensions and strain rates, when the deformation temperatures were higher, the recrystallization would proceed much easier, and the size of the recrystal grains could be also larger. And with the same deformation dimensions and temperatures, when the strain rates were lower, the recrystallization could also occur easier, and the proportion and size of the recrystal grains were larger.

Polyethylene (PE) pipes have been applied in transportation of key energy medium such as natural gas in the past decades. The mechanical property of PE is of great importance for better design and safer application of PE pipeline system. The large deformation behavior is a key character of PE, not only for its significant strain rate sensitivity, but also for localized necking process after yielding. In this paper, a new constitutive modeling method was proposed to charaterize the rate-denpendent large deformation behavior of PE, in which the true stress is regarded as a function of true stain and true strain rate alone. Uniaxial tensile tests of PE were conducted under various cross-head speeds, and a digital camera was used to record the real-time deformation of specimens. By separating the composite effect into respective effect of local true strain and strain rate on the local true stress in the necking region, a phenomenological model for describing the rate-dependent deformation behavior under uniaxial tension was ealstablished. Model results were validated and found in good agreement with experimental data.

We have conducted a detailed series of tensile tests on one heat of annealed 2 1/4 Cr-1 Mo steel over the range 25 to 593°C (75 to 1100°F) and at nominal strain rates of 0.4, 0.04, 0.004, and 0.0004/min. To determine an empirical relationship to represent the flow behavior, we fitted the true-stress true-strain data from these tests to several proposed models. The models fit were those proposed by Hollomon, Ludwik, Ludwigson, and Voce. From a comparison of the standard error of estimate, the Voce equation was concluded to be the best mathematical description of the data under most test conditions and the best single representation over the wide range of test conditions.

The isothermal compression tests of the nickel-based superalloy Waspaloy were carried out under various temperatures from 1040 to 1120 °C and strain rates from 0.01 to 10 s−1 with the height reduction of 60% and the flow stress curves were obtained. The curves show that the flow stress is greatly affected by the temperature and strain rates. Regression analysis of the experimental results was carried out to learn about the deformation behavior through the Arrhenius equation and came to the conclusion that the activation energy of Waspaloy is 669.7 kJ/mol. The constitutive equation of the Waspaloy was constructed. Meanwhile, the processing maps of the Waspaloy for the power dissipation and the flow instability were constructed. The processing map of the power dissipation and the flow instability depicts that the strain plays a major role in the processing maps. The instability zone is prone to appear at higher strain rates with the increasing strains. According to the instability processing map, there are three unsafe regimes around 1040–1120 °C/1.5–10 s−1, 1040–1080 °C/0.02–0.1 s−1 and 1110–1120 °C/0.02–0.3 s−1 that should be avoided during deformation process. The power dissipation maps show that the maximum dissipation is prone to appear at low strain rates (0.01 s−1) when the strain is about 0.1~0.6 while at middle strain rates (0.1–1 s−1) when the strain is over 0.6, and when the true strain is 0.9, the optimum processing condition is around 1060–1120 °C/0.1–1 s−1. The dynamic microstructures under different temperatures and strain rates were also obtained. We concluded that lower strain rates and higher temperatures are more applicable to obtain fully-recrystallized microstructures. Based on the instability maps and the power dissipation maps and the dynamic microstructures, the optimum deformation conditions are determined to be around 1080–1100 °C/0.1–1 s−1 and 1040–1120 °C/0.01 s−1.

Hot deformation behavior of Fe-30Mn-0.11C steel was investigated. Hot compression tests were carried out at various temperatures ranging from 800 °C to 1200 °C and at different strain rates of 0.01 s−1 to 10 s−1. The constitutive equation based on peak stress was established. Hot processing maps at different strains and recrystallization diagrams were also established and analyzed. The results show that dynamic recrystallization easily occur at high deformation temperatures and low strain rates. Safe and unstable zones are determined at the true strain of 0.6 and 0.7, and the hot deformation process parameters of partial dynamic recrystallization of the tested steel are also obtained.

Much of the work on the deformation behavior of superplastic alloys has been carried out using constant velocity testing. In constant velocity testing, the true strain rate is continuously decreasing with strain and the effect of the strain based on the deformation behavior is difficult to assess.In the present study, an Instron tensile testing machine (Model TT-CM-L) was modified with the addition of a small analog computer to yield true constant strain rates in the range of 10−4 min.−1 to 10 min.−1The Al-Zn eutectoid was cast from the pure metals and hotrolled to a 75% reduction in area. Tensile samples of 0.475 cm gauge diameter and 3.50 cm guage length were homogenized at 375°C for three hours and ice-water quenched. Prior to testing, samples were annealed at 250°C for three hours to yield an average grain size of one micron.

Hot compressive deformation of Udimet720Li alloy was carried out on Gleeble-3500 thermal mechanical simulator. The flow stress behavior of Udimet720Li alloy during hot compression was studied in the temperature range of 1100-1160 and at a strain rate of 0.001-1s -1. The results showed that the flow stress was controlled by both strain rate and deforming temperature. The flow stress decreased with the increase of deforming temperature, while increased with the increase of strain rate. The change of flow stress with deformation thermal parameters was revealed from true stress-true strain curves, and constitutive relationship of Udimet720Li alloy was obtained on the base of Arrhenius equations and the deformation activation energy was calculated.

ABSTRACTThe hot-workability of a two-phase (γ+α2) alloy, Ti-48A1-2Cr-2Nb, has been studied by conducting isothermal compression tests to 0.8 true strain over the temperature range of 975–1200°C at strain rates between 1×l0−1 and 3×10−3s−1. A deformation map showing temperature, strain rate, soundness of deformation, and isostress contours was constructed. Good workability is found from the low temperature/low strain rate regime to combinations of high temperature and either high or low strain rate. The upper-limit flow stress for good workability is between 450 and 500 MPa. Deformation induced softening occurs at all conditions. SEM and TEM examinations of the deformed specimens reveal that non-uniform deformation takes place at all strain rates, but cracking occurs mostly at high strain rates (e.g. 1×10−1s−1), especially combined with low temperatures. The cracking appears to progress primarily along γ/α2interfaces. It is thought that non-uniform deformation develops channels of shear bands, which in turn promote localized recrystallization, thus accommodating higher strains.
