Underwater plate vibration and its associated noise are of interest for the analysis of ship structures, propeller blades, and other areas of underwater acoustics. In order to analyze the relationship between a plate vibrating underwater and the acoustic pressure in the near-field, optical interferometric holography, using a blue-green laser beam, was used to determine surface displacement for the vibrating plate, which was excited through a fluid-coupled system. Acoustic measurements of the same source were made in a water tower concurrently with the holography and later at a precision acoustic testing facility. This method permits prediction of underwater plate modal frequencies and shapes with high accuracy.

The Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique was used to develop molecular markers linked to sex expression in Pistacia vera, a dioecious species. Progenies from two female parents (`Lassen' and `Kerman') pollinated by a common male parent (`Peters') were studied. Two bulks of DNA were made in each cross, one from males and one from females. DNA was extracted from each bulked sample as well as from each of the contributing individuals and from 14 additional P. vera cultivars. Twelve hundred decamer oligonucleotide primers were used to perform DNA amplification on the bulk DNA. This analysis led to the identification of one primer (OPO08) that produces a 945 bp. amplification band present only in females and absent in males. The relationship between band presence and female sex expression was conserved in every individual obtained from the two crosses and in 14 cultivars unrelated to the crosses. This band, which we propose is tightly linked to the gene(s) controlling sex determination, provides a reliable marker for sex of pistachio seedlings and should be a useful tool in pistachio breeding.

Abstract Hyperglycemia is the main characteristic of diabetes and is the result of an absolute or partial deficit in the production or action of insulin. Recent evidence suggests that hyperglycemia increases the risk of frailty. This issue is of great importance for the Mexican population given the high prevalence of diabetes, particularly in older adults. Our objective was to analyze the association between hyperglycemia and the incidence of frailty in a cohort of rural older adults in Mexico. Prospective cohort study with 600 rural older adults, with measurements made in 2009, 2013 and 2018. Fragility was defined using the proposal of Fried and colleagues. The determination of glycosylated hemoglobin was performed through the A1CNow® device, with capillary blood; hyperglycemia was defined considering the recommendation of the American Diabetes Association; where values greater than 6.5% (140 mg / dL) of glycosylated hemoglobin were considered hyperglycemia. We used an ordinal logistic regression model to analyze the relationship between hyperglycemia and incidence of frailty. In the baseline measurement (2009), 8.6% of older adults presented frailty. The incidence of frailty was 6.9%. After adjusting for health and sociodemographic characteristics, hyperglycemia was significantly associated with the incidence of frailty (RR = 2.24 P = 0.018). These findings allow us to determine that hyperglycemia is a prognostic factor of the incidence of frailty. Because frailty is preventable, future interventions for the prevention of frailty should consider the presence of hyperglycemia.

Methods for the quantitative determination of ribose 5-phosphate isomerase, ribulose 5-phosphate 3-epimerase, transketolase and transaldolase in tissue extracts are described. The determinations depend on the measurement of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate by using the coupled system triose phosphate isomerase, α-glycero-phosphate dehydrogenase and NADH. By using additional purified enzymes transketolase, ribose 5-phosphate isomerase and ribulose 5-phosphate epimerase conditions could be arranged so that each enzyme in turn was made rate-limiting in the overall system. Transaldolase was measured with fructose 6-phosphate and erythrose 4-phosphate as substrates, and again glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate was measured by using the same coupled system. Measurements of the activities of the non-oxidative reactions of the pentose phosphate pathway were made in a variety of tissues and the values compared with those of the two oxidative steps catalysed by glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase.

For many years the concept of quantitative diffraction contrast experiments might have consisted of the determination of dislocation Burgers vectors using a g.b = 0 criterion from several different 2-beam images. Since the advent of the personal computer revolution, the available computing power for performing image-processing and image-simulation calculations is enormous and ubiquitous. Several programs now exist to perform simulations of diffraction contrast images using various approximations. The most common approximations are the use of only 2-beams or a single systematic row to calculate the image contrast, or calculating the image using a column approximation. The increasing amount of literature showing comparisons of experimental and simulated images shows that it is possible to obtain very close agreement between the two images; although the choice of parameters used, and the assumptions made, in performing the calculation must be properly dealt with. The simulation of the images of defects in materials has, in many cases, therefore become a tractable problem.

SummaryWhen the International Normalised Ratio (INR) is used for control of oral anticoagulant therapy the same result should be obtained irrespective of the laboratory reagent used. However, in the UK National External Quality Assessment Scheme (NEQAS) for Blood Coagulation INRs determined using different reagents have been significantly different. For 18 NEQAS samples Manchester Reagent (MR) was associated with significantly lower INRs than those obtained using Diagen Activated (DA, p = 0.0004) or Instrumentation Laboratory PT-Fib HS (IL, p = 0.0001). Mean INRs for this group were 3.15, 3.61, and 3.65 for MR, DA, and IL respectively. For 61 fresh samples from warfarin-ised patients with INRs of greater than 3.0 the relationship between thromboplastins in respect of INR was similar to that observed for NEQAS data. Thus INRs obtained with MR were significantly lower than with DA or IL (p <0.0001). Mean INRs for this group were 4.01, 4.40, and 4.59 for MR, DA, and IL respectively. We conclude that the differences between INRs measured with the thromboplastins studied here are sufficiently great to influence patient management through warfarin dosage schedules, particularly in the upper therapeutic range of INR. There is clearly a need to address the issues responsible for the observed discrepancies.

The Article briefly discusses the need for generation of the Science of Ahangyol, and this science’s scientific basis, object and subject, category system, scientific research methods and application options. Ahangyol is a universal science and may be useful in any sphere. It may assist in problem solving in peacemaking process and in many areas such as ecology, economics, politics, culture, management and etc. This science stipulates that any activity and any decision made in the life may only and solely be successful when they comply with harmony principles more, which are the principles of existence and activity of the world. A right strategic approach of the Eastern Philosophy and the Middle Age Islamic Philosophy and scientific thought has an important potential. This strategic approach creates opportunities to also consider irrational factors in addition to rational ones comprehensively in scientific researches. The modern scientific thought contributes to implementation of these opportunities. Ahangyol is a science of determination of ways to achieve harmony in any sphere and of creation of special methods to make progress in these ways through assistance of the modern science. Methods of the System Theory, Mathematics, IT, Astronomy, Physics, Biology, Sociology, Statistics and etc. are more extensively applied. Information is given on some of these methods. Moreover, the Science of Ahangyol, which is a new philosophical worldview and a new paradigm contributes to clarification of metaphysic views considerably and discovery of the scientific potential of religious books.

Vertical axis wind turbine technology has been applied last years, very long after horizontal axis wind turbine technology. Aerodynamic problems of vertical axis wind machines are discussible. An important problem is the determination of the incidence law in the interaction between wind and rotor blades. The focus of the work is to establish equations of the incidence depending on the blade azimuth, and to solve them. From these results, aerodynamic torques and power can be calculated. The incidence angle is a parameter of velocity triangle, and both the factors depend not only on the blade azimuth but also on the ratio of rotational speed and horizontal speed. The built computational program allows theoretically selecting the relationship of geometric parameters of wind turbine in accordance with requirements on power, wind speed and installation conditions.

Abstract This four-part series of papers addresses the problem of systematic determination of the influence of several tire factors on tire treadwear. Both the main effect of each factor and some of their interactive effects are included. The program was also structured to evaluate the influence of some external-to-tire conditions on the relationship of tire factors to treadwear. Part I describes the experimental design used to evaluate the effects on treadwear of generic tire type, aspect ratio, tread pattern (groove or void level), type of pattern (straight rib or block), and tread compound. Construction procedures and precautions used to obtain a valid and functional test method are included. Two guiding principles to be used in the data analyses of Parts II and III are discussed. These are the fractional groove and void concept, to characterize tread pattern geometry, and a demonstration of the equivalence of wear rate for identical compounds on whole tread or multi-section tread tires.
