Effects of Upstream Disturbances on the Spreading of Large Fluid-Amplifier-Type Jets

Flow disturbances were introduced upstream of a rectangular nozzle and spreading jet confined by top and bottom plates to determine the effect on the velocity profiles. The mean velocity and turbulence distributions in the symmetrical mixing regions near a given nozzle are presented for several upstream disturbance intensity levels and several jet nozzle exit velocities. For the essentially two-dimensional jet flow from a high aspect ratio nozzle the results at several upstream disturbance intensity levels revealed the mean velocity distribution to be self-preserving near the nozzle. Over a large range of upstream disturbance intensity inputs the location of the virtual origin for each mixing region changed significantly while the mixing regions exhibited a constant maximum dimensionless spread rate. Other results for the essentially three-dimensional jet flow from a low aspect ratio nozzle did not show self-preservation in the mixing regions and furthermore revealed extraordinary changes in the velocity profiles.

AbstractLocal flow dynamics play a central role in physiological processes like respiration and nutrient uptake in coral reefs. Despite the importance of corals as hosts to a quarter of all marine life, and the pervasive threats currently facing corals, little is known about the detailed hydrodynamics of branching coral colonies. Here, in order to investigate the effects of the colony branch density and surface roughness on the local flow field, three-dimensional simulations were performed using immersed boundary, large-eddy simulations for four different colony geometries under low and high unidirectional oncoming flow conditions. The first two colonies were from the Pocillopora genus, one with a densely branched geometry, and one with a comparatively loosely branched geometry. The second pair of colony geometries were derived from a scan of a single Montipora capitata colony, one with the verrucae covering the surface intact, and one with the verrucae removed. We found that the mean velocity profiles in the densely branched colony changed substantially in the middle of the colony, becoming significantly reduced at middle heights where flow penetration was poor, while the mean velocity profiles in the loosely branched colony remained similar in character from the front to the back of the colony, with no middle-range velocity deficit appearing at the center of the colony. When comparing the turbulent flow statistics at the surface of the rough and smooth M. capitata colonies, we found higher Reynolds stress components for the smooth colony, indicating higher rates of mixing and transport compared to the rough colony, which must sacrifice mixing and transport efficiency in order to maintain its surface integrity in its natural high-flow environment. These results suggest that the densely branched, roughly patterned corals found in high flow areas may be more resistant not only to breakage, but also to flow penetration.

A developed plate stator model with and without trailing edge blowing (TEB) is studied using experimental methods. Wake characteristics of flow over the stator in the three-dimensional wake regimes are studied using hot-wire anemometry (HWA) and particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques. First, the mean velocity profiles have been measured in the wake of the stator using HWA. Four wake characteristics have been obtained through momentum thickness judgments: pure wake, weak wake, momentumless wake, and jet. These velocity profiles show some differences in momentum deficit for the four cases. Then, the velocity spectra of the pure wake and momentumless wake obtained through the HWA measurements showed that TEB can eliminate the shedding vortex of the stator. Characteristic length scales based on the wake turbulent intensity profiles showed that the momentumless wake can reduce the wake width and depth. PIV measurement is carried out to measure the flow field of the four wakes. Finally, the application of TEB approaching momentumless wake status is used on an industrial ventilation low-pressure axial fan to assess noise reduction. The results show that TEB can make the outlet of the stator uniform, reduce velocity fluctuation, destroy the vorticity structure downstream of the stator, and reduce interaction noise level of the stator and rotor.

The present experiment focuses on the vorticity diffusion in a stronger wall jet managed by a three-dimensional flat plate wing in the outer layer. Measurement of the fluctuating velocities and vorticity correlation has been carried out with 4-wire vorticity probe. The turbulent vorticity diffusion due to the large scale eddies in the outer layer is quantitatively examined by using the 4-wire vorticity probe. Quantitative relationship between vortex structure and Reynolds shear stress is revealed by means of directly measured experimental evidence which explains vorticity diffusion process and influence of the manipulating wing. It is expected that the three-dimensional outer layer manipulator contributes to keep convex profile of the mean velocity, namely, suppression of the turbulent diffusion and entrainment.

Turbulent boundary layer flows over a flat plate with multiple transverse square grooves spaced 10 element widths apart were investigated. Mean velocity profiles, turbulence intensity profiles, and the distributions of the skin-friction coefficients (Cf) and the integral parameters are presented for two grooved walls. The two transverse square groove sizes investigated are 5mm and 2.5mm. Laser-Doppler Anemometer (LDA) was used for the mean velocity and turbulence intensity measurements. The skin-friction coefficient was determined from the gradient of the mean velocity profiles in the viscous sublayer. Distribution of Cf in the first grooved-wall case (5mm) shows that Cf overshoots downstream of the groove and then oscillates within the uncertainty range and never shows the expected undershoot in Cf. The same overshoot is seen in the second grooved-wall case (2.5mm), however, Cf continues to oscillate above the uncertainty range and never returns to the smooth-wall value. The mean velocity profiles clearly represent the behavior of Cf where a downward shift is seen in the Cf overshoot region and no upward shift is seen in these profiles. The results show that the smaller grooves exhibit larger effects on Cf, however, the boundary layer responses to these effects in a slower rate than to those of the larger grooves.

The use of a three-dimensional Euler inverse method for the design of a centrifugal impeller is demonstrated. Both the blade shape and the endwalls are iteratively designed. The meridional contour is modified in order to control the mean velocity level in the blade channel, while the blade shape is designed to achieve a prescribed loading distribution between the inlet and the outlet. The method salves the time dependent Euler equations in a numerical domain of which some boundaries (the blades or the endwalls) move and change shape during the transient part of the computation, until a prescribed pressure distribution is achieved on the blade surfaces. The method is applied to the design of a centrifugal compressor impeller, whose hub endwall and blade surfaces are modified by the inviscid inverse method. The real performance of both initial and modified geometries are compared through three-dimensional Navier-Stokes computations.

The purpose of this paper is to provide some possible explantions for certain observed phenomena associated with the mean-velocity profile of a turbulent boundary layer which undergoes a rapid yawing. For the cases considered the yawing is caused by an obstruction attached to the wall upon which the boundary layer is developing. Only incompressible flow is considered.§1 of the paper is concerned with the outer region of the boundary layer and deals with a phenomenon observed by Johnston (1960) who described it with his triangular model for the polar plot of the velocity distribution. This was also observed by Hornung & Joubert (1963). It is shown here by a first-approximation analysis that such a behaviour is mainly a consequence of the geometry of the apparatus used. The analysis also indicates that, for these geometries, the outer part of the boundary-layer profile can be described by a single vector-similarity defect law rather than the vector ‘wall-wake’ model proposed by Coles (1956). The former model agrees well with the experimental results of Hornung & Joubert.In §2, the flow close to the wall is considered. Treating this region as an equilibrium layer and using similarity arguments, a three-dimensional version of the ‘law of the wall’ is derived. This relates the mean-velocity-vector distribution with the pressure-gradient vector and wall-shear-stress vector and explains how the profile skews near the wall. The theory is compared with Hornung & Joubert's experimental results. However at this stage the results are inconclusive because of the lack of a sufficient number of measured quantities.

SummaryJets issuing from rectangular slots cut in thin plates exhibit some unusual features, including unequal spreading rates in the spanwise and transverse directions, the appearance of velocity peaks near the “ends” of the jet and changing rates of centreline velocity decay in the downstream direction. This study examines the effects of aspect ratio on such flows. The flow field has been investigated using both total head tubes and hot wire anemometry. The results are presented in the form of three-dimensional plots of total pressure and contour maps of constant velocity, streamwise turbulence intensity and the Reynolds shear stresses. The decay of mean velocity and stream-wise turbulence intensity along the centreline are presented. The rates of spanwise spreading and the location of the velocity peaks at various downstream stations are discussed. If the aspect ratio is small enough, spanwise peaks in the mean velocity distribution are suppressed.

This paper describes an experiment in which a uniformly sheared turbulence was subjected to simultaneous streamwise flow curvature and rotation about the streamwise axis. The distortion of the turbulence is complex but well defined and may serve as a test case for turbulence model development. The uniformly sheared turbulence was developed in a straight wind tunnel and then passed into a curved tunnel section. At the start of the curved section the plane of the mean shear was normal to the plane of curvature so as to create a three-dimensional or ‘out of plane’ curvature configuration. On entering the curved tunnel, the flow developed a streamwise mean vorticity that rotated the mean shear about the tunnel centreline through approximately 70°, so that the shear was nearly in the plane of curvature and oriented so as to have a stabilizing effect on the turbulence. Hot wire measurements of the mean velocity, mean vorticity, mean rate of strain and Reynolds stress anisotropy development along the wind tunnel centreline are reported. The observed effect of the mean shear rotation on the turbulence was to diminish the shear stress in the plane normal to the plane of curvature while generating non-zero values of the shear stress in the plane of curvature. A rotating frame was identified for which the measured mean velocity field took the form of a simple shear flow. The turbulence anisotropy was transformed to this frame to estimate the effects of frame rotation on the structure of sheared turbulence.
