The Newton-Raphson algorithm was used in conjunction with Murty’s algorithm and the finite-element method to analyze the elastohydrodynamic lubrication of a journal bearing under dynamic loading. Cavitation boundary conditions were used. A realistic compliance matrix and load schedule were used in the illustrative example. Solutions for the film pressure, the film thickness and its rate of change with time were obtained as functions of the crank angle.

An elastohydrodynamic lubrication model is presented for the coupled problem of a hydrodynamic lubricating fluid in an elastic structure that includes distributed structural inertia. The problem is formulated and the governing equations solved with the finite element method for an illustrative journal bearing subject to dynamic loading. Inertia effects are demonstrated through comparisons with an existing quasi-static model. While it is true that structural inertia can be neglected without significant loss of accuracy for many journal bearing applications, the new model presented does capture effects of distributed structural inertia where such effects are important and exhibits improvements over existing methods with respect to numerical stability.

Performance parameters such as power loss, minimum film thickness, and maximum oil temperature of the sector-shaped tilting pad thrust bearings employing the new micro-structural geometries on pad surfaces have been investigated. The lubrication equation incorporating the mass-conservation issue is discretized using the finite element method and the solution of resulting algebraic equations is obtained employing a Newton-Schur method. The pad equilibrium in the analysis is established using the Newton-Raphson and Braydon methods. The influence of attributes of micro-structures such as depth, circumferential and radial positioning extents have been explored on the performance behaviours. It is found that with the new micro-structured pad surfaces, the performance parameters significantly improved in comparison to conventional plain and conventional rectangular pocketed pads.

An increase in the volume of bulk cargo transportation through international transport corridors necessitates the commissioning of tank containers. Intermodalization of a tank container predetermines its load in various operating conditions depending on the type of vehicle on which it is carried: aviation, sea, air or rail. The analysis of the operating conditions of tank containers, as well as the regulatory documents governing their workload, led to the conclusion that the most dynamic loads acting on the supporting structures during transportation by rail. Namely, during the maneuvering collision of a wagon-platform, on which there are tank containers. In this case, it is stipulated that for a loaded tank container, the dynamic load is assumed to be 4g, and for an empty (for the purpose of checking the reinforcement) – 5g. It is important to note that when the tank container is underfilled with bulk cargo and taking into account movements of fittings relative to fittings, the maximum value of dynamic load can reach significantly larger values. Therefore, in order to ensure the strength of tank containers, an improvement of their structures has been proposed by introducing elastic-viscous bonds into the fittings. To determine the dynamic loading of the tank container, taking into account the improvement measures, mathematical models have been compiled, taking into account the presence of elastic, viscous and elastic-viscous bonds between the fittings, stops and fittings. It is established that the elastic bond does not fully compensate for the dynamic loads acting on the tank container. The results of mathematical modeling of dynamic loading, taking into account the presence of viscous and elastic-viscous coupling in the fittings, made it possible to conclude that the maximum accelerations per tank container do not exceed the normalized values. The determination of the dynamic loading of the tank container is also carried out by computer simulation using the finite element method. The calculation takes place in the software package CosmosWorks. The maximum values of accelerations are obtained, as well as their distribution fields relative to the supporting structure of the tank container. The developed models are verified by the Fisher criterion. The research will contribute to the creation of tank containers with improved technical, operational, as well as environmental characteristics and an increase in the efficiency of the liquid cargo transportation process through international transport corridors.

The bushing profiles have important effects on the performance of journal bearing. In this article, the effects of plain profile, double conical profile, and double parabolic profile on the elastohydrodynamic lubrication of the journal bearing under steady operating conditions are investigated. The journal misalignment and asperity contact between journal and bushing surface are considered, while the modification of the bushing profiles due to running-in is neglected. Finite element method is used for the elastic deformation of bushing surface, while the numerical solution is established by using finite difference method and overrelaxation iterative method. The numerical results reveal that the double parabolic profile with appropriate size can significantly increase the minimum film thickness and reduce the asperity contact pressure and friction, while the maximum film pressure, load-carrying capacity, and leakage flow rate change slightly under steady operating conditions. This study may help to reduce the edge wear and prolong the service life of the journal bearing.

The dynamic loading of the bearing structure of the flat wagon from round pipes was investigated during transportation on the railway ferry. The main types of movements of the railway ferry with wagons located on its decks are taken into account. The research has been carried out on the strength of the bearing structure of the flat wagon by the finite element method. The coefficient of the reserve for the fatigue strength of the bearing structure is calculated, taking into account the action of cyclic loads in the conditions of sea disturbance.

Certain results are presented in this paper on damped vibration of a laminated cantilever beam with a single closing delamination. In order to investigate this task the finite element method has been applied in the current study. For modelling the beam higher order shear deformation beam finite elements have been used. The vibration of the beam is investigated in the time domain using a dynamic contact algorithm developed by the authors. The algorithm is based on the Newmark method and also incorporates a Newton-Raphson based procedure for resolving the equation of motion. The time series obtained from solving the equation of motion have been subsequently analysed in the frequency domain by using FFT (Fast Fourier Transform). The vibration responses of the beam due to various harmonic and impulse excitations, at different delamination locations, and for different delamination lengths, as well as changes in the dissipation of damping energy due to the delamination, have all been considered in the paper.
