A Modified Design for λ-Type Double-Cranks to Approximate a Straight Line

Double-cranks containing a Chebyshev-dyad are investigated for their use as a straight-line mechanism. The three available design degrees of freedom have been used for the optimization of the minimum transmission angle, for the minimization of the maximum deviation and for the length L of the straight-stretch in the coupler curve. The resulting double-cranks are shown to have deviations that are about half as large as for those in which the coupler point lies on the extension of the coupler. For any maximum deviation, the length L of the straight-stretch also appears to be about 1.5 times as long as the one obtained when Ball’s point lies at the base of the design. A graph showing the maximum deviation as a function of L allows the designer to pick his choice mechanism. A table also will be of help to find accurate dimensions of the mechanism that yields a given deviation or a given length L of the straight part in the coupler curve.

The accuracy of the least squares method in the isotope dilution analysis is studied using two models, viz a model of a two-parameter straight line and a model of a one-parameter straight line.The equations for the direct and the inverse isotope dilution methods are transformed into linear coordinates, and the intercept and slope of the two-parameter straight line and the slope of the one-parameter straight line are evaluated and treated.

Abstract. Post-event damage assessments are of paramount importance to document the effects of high-impact weather-related events such as floods or strong wind events. Moreover, evaluating the damage and characterizing its extent and intensity can be essential for further analysis such as completing a diagnostic meteorological case study. This paper presents a methodology to perform field surveys of damage caused by strong winds of convective origin (i.e. tornado, downburst and straight-line winds). It is based on previous studies and also on 136 field studies performed by the authors in Spain between 2004 and 2018. The methodology includes the collection of pictures and records of damage to human-made structures and on vegetation during the in situ visit to the affected area, as well as of available automatic weather station data, witness reports and images of the phenomenon, such as funnel cloud pictures, taken by casual observers. To synthesize the gathered data, three final deliverables are proposed: (i) a standardized text report of the analysed event, (ii) a table consisting of detailed geolocated information about each damage point and other relevant data and (iii) a map or a KML (Keyhole Markup Language) file containing the previous information ready for graphical display and further analysis. This methodology has been applied by the authors in the past, sometimes only a few hours after the event occurrence and, on many occasions, when the type of convective phenomenon was uncertain. In those uncertain cases, the information resulting from this methodology contributed effectively to discern the phenomenon type thanks to the damage pattern analysis, particularly if no witness reports were available. The application of methodologies such as the one presented here is necessary in order to build homogeneous and robust databases of severe weather cases and high-impact weather events.

Accurate and real-time acquisition of vehicle state parameters is key to improving the performance of vehicle control systems. To improve the accuracy of state parameter estimation for distributed drive electric vehicles, an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) algorithm combined with the Huber method is proposed. In this paper, we introduce the nonlinear modified Dugoff tire model, build a nonlinear three-degrees-of-freedom time-varying parametric vehicle dynamics model, and extend the vehicle mass, the height of the center of gravity, and the yaw moment of inertia, which are significantly influenced by the driving state, into the vehicle state vector. The vehicle state parameter observer was designed using an unscented Kalman filter framework. The Huber cost function was introduced to correct the measured noise and state covariance in real-time to improve the robustness of the observer. The simulation verification of a double-lane change and straight-line driving conditions at constant speed was carried out using the Simulink/Carsim platform. The results show that observation using the Huber-based robust unscented Kalman filter (HRUKF) more realistically reflects the vehicle state in real-time, effectively suppresses the influence of abnormal error and noise, and obtains high observation accuracy.

The experiments to which I shall refer were carried out in the physical laboratory of the University during the late summer session. I was ably assisted in conducting the experiments by three students of the laboratory,—Messrs H. A. Salvesen, G. M. Connor, and D. E. Stewart. The method which was used of measuring the difference of potential required to produce a disruptive discharge of electricity under given conditions, is that described in a paper communicated to the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1876 in the names of Mr J. A. Paton, M. A., and myself, and was suggested to me by Professor Tait as a means of attacking the experimental problems mentioned below.The above sketch which I took of the apparatus in situ may facilitate tha description of the method. The receiver of an air-pump, having a rod capable of being moved air-tight up and down through the neck, was attached to one of the conductors of a Holtz machine in such a manner that the conductor of the machine and the rod formed one conducting system. Projecting from the bottom of the receiver was a short metallic rod, forming one conductor with the metallic parts of the air-pump, and by means of a chain with the uninsulated conductor of the Holtz machine. Brass balls and discs of various sizes were made to order, capable of being screwed on to the ends of the rods. On the table, and at a distance of about six feet from the receiver, was a stand supporting two insulated brass balls, the one fixed, the other having one degree of freedom, viz., of moving in a straight line in the plane of the table. The fixed insulated ball A was made one conductor with the insulated conductor of the Holtz and the rod of the receiver, by means of a copper wire insulated with gutta percha, having one end stuck firmly into a hole in the collar of the receiver, and having the other fitted in between the glass stem and the hollow in the ball, by which it fitted on to the stem tightly. A thin wire similarly fitted in between the ball B and its insulating stem connected the ball with the insulated half ring of a divided ring reflecting electrometer.

Abstract The leg mechanism of a walking machine has a strong influence on the performance of the machine. A successful leg mechanism should be energy efficient, compact in size, strong and simple. In order to achieve good energy efficiency, a walking machine leg should be able to generate an exact or approximate straight line at the foot with only one driving actuator. This paper deals with the synthesis and analysis of a new leg mechanism — the planetary gear leg mechanism. Four types of planetary gear legs are studied. By the SUMT optimization method, a 20 inch tall leg is able to generate an approximate straight line trajectory with a maximum deviation of 0.12805 inches in a 20 inch stroke. The direct and inverse kinematics and velocities of the legs are analyzed. Also, the distribution of actuator force/moment during walking are studied. The results show that this leg design has great potential to be used as a practical walking machine leg.

One-way clutches are frequently used in the serpentine belt accessory drives of automobiles and heavy vehicles. The clutch plays a role similar to a vibration absorber in order to reduce belt/pulley vibration and noise and increase belt life. This paper analyzes a two-pulley system where the driven pulley has a one-way clutch between the pulley and accessory shaft that engages only for positive relative displacement between these components. The belt is modeled with linear springs that transmit torque from the driving pulley to the accessory pulley. The one-way clutch is modeled as a piecewise linear spring with discontinuous stiffness that separates the driven pulley into two degrees of freedom (DOF). The harmonic balance method (HBM) combined with arc-length continuation is employed to illustrate the nonlinear dynamic behavior of the one-way clutch. HBM with arc-length continuation yields the stable and unstable periodic solutions for given parameters. These solutions are examined across a range of excitation frequencies. The results are confirmed by numerical integration and the widely used bifurcation software AUTO. At the first primary resonance, most of the responses are aperiodic, including quasiperiodic and chaotic solutions. At the second primary resonance, the peak bends to the left with classical softening nonlinearity because clutch disengagement decouples the pulley and the accessory over portions of the response period. The dependence on system parameters such as clutch stiffness, excitation amplitude, and inertia ratio between the pulley and accessory is studied to characterize the nonlinear dynamics across a range of conditions.

The term scholar, as current in the English language, has two extreme acceptations, tyro and proficient; or what the later Greeks fancifully termed the alpha and omega of acquirement. If we attempt to trace the steps by which even the adult student of any especial branch of professional or literary knowledge has fairly passed the boundary defined by the one meaning in passing on to that position denoted by the other, it will commonly be found, that in place of that lucid order, that straight line from point to point, which theory and resolve generally premise, the real order of acquirement has been desultory—the real line of progression, circuitous and uncertain.

Abstract This paper demonstrates procedures implemented for the synthesis of a four-bar mechanism that produces large angular oscillations of the output member while maintaining effective transmission angles. The mechanisms are modeled as being driven by a force applied at the coupler link. Additionally this force’s line of action is constrained to occur along an approximate straight line. This research was conducted out of the need for a device that is capable of retraction of the horizontal tool bar housed on the back of a tractor. The tool bars accommodate the implements required to accomplish the numerous tasks of the farmer, i.e. row markers, sprayer arms, planters, etc. Upon retraction of the tool bar so that it is parallel to ground, the appropriate tools are lowered to their working position. As the length of these bars increases, a savings of time and increased productivity is realized. Kurt Hain makes the following observation regarding large oscillation mechanisms in [1]: “It would be very difficult to solve this problem with one four-bar linkage, because it is difficult to design a four-bar linkage having such a large oscillation of a crank without running into problems of poor transmission angle characteristics; it might be possible to use linkages in combinations with gears, but this would make the mechanism more expensive, less efficient, and probably noisier.” In this study simulated annealing, a genetic algorithm and the generalized reduced gradient method are used to produce mechanisms with large angular oscillations of the output member and transmission angles that vary by as little as 20° from 90°. A comparative analysis of each of the optimization procedures is presented with observations regarding the efficacy of each method in the solution of the large oscillation mechanism.

Long duration automobile-induced vibration is the cause of many ailments to humans. Predicting and mitigating these vibrations through seat requires a good model of seated human body. A good model is the one that strikes the right balance between modelling difficulty and simulation results accuracy. Increasing the number of body parts which have been separately modelled and increasing the number of ways these parts are connected to each other increase the number of degrees of freedom of the entire model. A number of such models have been reported in the literature. These range from simple lumped parameter models with limited accuracy to advanced models with high computational cost. However, a systematic comparison of these models has not been reported till date. This work creates eight such models ranging from 8 to 26 degrees of freedom and tries to identify the model which strikes the right balance between modelling complexity and results accuracy. A comparison of the models’ prediction with experimental data published in the literature allows the identification of a 12 degree of freedom backrest supported model as optimum for modelling complexity and prediction accuracy.
