Dynamic Model of a Fluctuating Rocker-Arm Ratio Cam System

This study is focused upon one example from a class of cam systems with a fluctuating rocker-arm ratio, known as “finger follower” cam systems. This class of cam systems is typically built in practice with a hydraulic tappet as the pivot-end support for the finger-follower, and the rocker-arm ratio varies as much as 34 percent from the baseline value during the cam cycle. A six-degree-of-freedom dynamic model is formulated to predict the forces as well as the motions of the cam system components. Successful dynamic modeling of such a system requires an accurate model for the hydraulic tappet as well as for the cam system, and so, six separate dynamic phenomena are identified in the tappet and the resulting nonlinear dynamics included in the cam system model. Lateral and rotational motions, as well as the customary longitudinal displacement, are admitted for the valve, and it is found that although the extra degrees of freedom change the cam contact force but little, they strongly influence where in the cam system toss and impact occur.

This paper is devoted to the kinematic design of a new six degree-of-freedom haptic device using two parallel mechanisms. The first one, called orthoglide, provides the translation motions and the second one, called agile eye, produces the rotational motions. These two motions are decoupled to simplify the direct and inverse kinematics, as it is needed for real-time control. To reduce the inertial load, the motors are fixed on the base and a transmission with two universal joints is used to transmit the rotational motions from the base to the end-effector. Two alternative wrists are proposed (i), the agile eye with three degrees of freedom or (ii) a hybrid wrist made by the assembly of a two-dof agile eye with a rotary motor. The last one is optimized to increase its stiffness and to decrease the number of moving parts.

Abstract This paper presents a rigorous analysis of a promising bi-modal multirotor vehicle that can roll and fly. This class of vehicle provides energetic and locomotive advantages over traditional unimodal vehicles. Despite superficial similarities to traditional multirotor vehicles, the dynamics of the vehicle analyzed herein differ substantially. This paper is the first to offer a complete and rigorous derivation, simulation, and validation of the vehicle's terrestrial rolling dynamics. Variational mechanics is used to develop a six degrees-of-freedom dynamic model of the vehicle subject to kinematic rolling constraints and various nonconservative forces. The resulting dynamic system is determined to be differentially flat and the flat outputs of the vehicle are derived. A functional hardware embodiment of the vehicle is constructed, from which empirical motion data are obtained via odometry and inertial sensing. A numerical simulation of the dynamic model is executed, which accurately predicts complex dynamic phenomena observed in the empirical data, such as gravitational and gyroscopic nonlinearities; the comparison of simulation results to empirical data validates the dynamic model.

Abstract Aiming at the current development of drilling technology and the deepening of oil and gas exploration, we focus on better studying the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the drill string under complex working conditions and knowing the real movement of the drill string during drilling. This paper firstly combines the actual situation of the well to establish the dynamic model of the horizontal drill string, and analyzes the dynamic characteristics, giving the expression of the force of each part of the model. Secondly, it introduces the piecewise constant method (simply known as PT method), and gives the solution equation. Then according to the basic parameters, the axial vibration displacement and vibration velocity at the test points are solved by the PT method and the Runge–Kutta method, respectively, and the phase diagram, the Poincare map, and the spectrogram are obtained. The results obtained by the two methods are compared and analyzed. Finally, the relevant experimental tests are carried out. It shows that the results of the dynamic model of the horizontal drill string are basically consistent with the results obtained by the actual test, which verifies the validity of the dynamic model and the correctness of the calculated results. When solving the drill string nonlinear dynamics, the results of the PT method is closer to the theoretical solution than that of the Runge–Kutta method with the same order and time step. And the PT method is better than the Runge–Kutta method with the same order in smoothness and continuity in solving the drill string nonlinear dynamics.

This paper presents the design, development and evaluation of a unique non-contact instrumentation system that can accurately measure the interface displacement between two rigid components in six degrees of freedom. The system was developed to allow measurement of the relative displacements between interfaces within a stacked column of brick-like components, with an accuracy of 0.05 mm and 0.1 degrees. The columns comprised up to 14 components, with each component being a scale model of a graphite brick within an Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor core. A set of 585 of these columns makes up the Multi Layer Array, which was designed to investigate the response of the reactor core to seismic inputs, with excitation levels up to 1 g from 0 to 100 Hz. The nature of the application required a compact and robust design capable of accurately recording fully coupled motion in all six degrees of freedom during dynamic testing. The novel design implemented 12 Hall effect sensors with a calibration procedure based on system identification techniques. The measurement uncertainty was ±0.050 mm for displacement and ±0.052 degrees for rotation, and the system can tolerate loss of data from two sensors with the uncertainly increasing to only 0.061 mm in translation and 0.088 degrees in rotation. The system has been deployed in a research programme that has enabled EDF to present seismic safety cases to the Office for Nuclear Regulation, resulting in life extension approvals for several reactors. The measurement system developed could be readily applied to other situations where the imposed level of stress at the interface causes negligible material strain, and accurate non-contact six-degree-of-freedom interface measurement is required.

In seismology, an increased effort to observe all 12 degrees of freedom of seismic ground motion by complementing translational ground motion observations with measurements of strain and rotational motions could be witnessed in recent decades, aiming at an enhanced probing and understanding of Earth and other planetary bodies. The evolution of optical instrumentation, in particular large-scale ring laser installations, such as G-ring and ROMY (ROtational Motion in seismologY), and their geoscientific application have contributed significantly to the emergence of this scientific field. The currently most advanced, large-scale ring laser array is ROMY, which is unprecedented in scale and design. As a heterolithic structure, ROMY’s ring laser components are subject to optical frequency drifts. Such Sagnac interferometers require new considerations and approaches concerning data acquisition, processing and quality assessment, compared to conventional, mechanical instrumentation. We present an automated approach to assess the data quality and the performance of a ring laser, based on characteristics of the interferometric Sagnac signal. The developed scheme is applied to ROMY data to detect compromised operation states and assign quality flags. When ROMY’s database becomes publicly accessible, this assessment will be employed to provide a quality control feature for data requests.

A nonlinear model for the dynamic behavior of tubular beams such as marine risers, pipelines, legs of tension leg platforms, and drill strings is developed. The formulation includes three translational degrees of freedom of the riser cross section and three rotational degrees of freedom for shear and torsion. Nonlinear constitutive equations for cross sections of unequal principal stiffnesses and extensible material are derived. Initial structural imperfections which are inherent in long risers are modeled in the form of initial curvature and geometric torsion which do not induce strains. The inertia forces due to the motion of the riser and internal fluid motions are formulated. The external hydrodynamic and hydrostatic forces are integrated on the riser surface as pressure and traction forces. The model is a comprehensive consistent nonlinear formulation of the riser dynamics and can be used for evaluation of the significance of nonlinear effects.

The aim of this work is to apply classical mechanics to a description of the dynamic state of C20@C80 diamond complex. Endohedral rotations of fullerenes are of great interest due to the ability of the materials created on the basis of onion complexes to accumulate energy at rotational degrees of freedom. For such systems, a concept of temperature is not specified. In this paper, a closed description of the rotation of large molecules arranged in diamond shells is obtained in the framework of the classical approach. This description is used for C20@C80 diamond complex. Two different problems of molecular dynamics, distinguished by a fixing method for an outer shell of the considered bimolecular complex, are solved. In all the cases, the fullerene rotation frequency is calculated. Since a class of possible motions for a single carbon body (molecule) consists of rotations and translational displacements, the paper presents the equations determining each of these groups of motions. Dynamic equations for rotational motions of molecules are obtained employing the moment of momentum theorem for relative motions of the system near the fullerenes’ centers of mass. These equations specify the operation of the complex as a molecular pendulum. The equations of motion of the fullerenes’ centers of mass determine vibrations in the system, i.e. the operation of the complex as a molecular oscillator.

The contact process of a space docking device needs verification before launching. The verification cannot only rely on the software simulation since the contact dynamic models are not accurate enough yet, especially when the geometric shape of the device is complex. Hardware-in-the-loop simulation is a choice to perform the ground test, where the contact dynamic model is replaced by a real device and the real contact occurs. However, the Hardware-in-the-loop simulation suffers from energy increase and instability since time delay is unavoidable. The existing delay compensation methods are mainly focused on a uniaxial or three-dimensional contact. In this paper, a force-based delay compensation method is proposed for the hardware-in-the-loop simulation of a six degree-of-freedom space contact. A six degree-of-freedom dynamic model of the spacecraft motion is derived, and a six degree-of-freedom delay compensation method is proposed. The delay is divided into track delay and measurement delay, which are compensated individually. Experiment results show that the proposed delay compensation method is effective for the six degree-of-freedom space contact.

One-way clutches are frequently used in the serpentine belt accessory drives of automobiles and heavy vehicles. The clutch plays a role similar to a vibration absorber in order to reduce belt/pulley vibration and noise and increase belt life. This paper analyzes a two-pulley system where the driven pulley has a one-way clutch between the pulley and accessory shaft that engages only for positive relative displacement between these components. The belt is modeled with linear springs that transmit torque from the driving pulley to the accessory pulley. The one-way clutch is modeled as a piecewise linear spring with discontinuous stiffness that separates the driven pulley into two degrees of freedom (DOF). The harmonic balance method (HBM) combined with arc-length continuation is employed to illustrate the nonlinear dynamic behavior of the one-way clutch. HBM with arc-length continuation yields the stable and unstable periodic solutions for given parameters. These solutions are examined across a range of excitation frequencies. The results are confirmed by numerical integration and the widely used bifurcation software AUTO. At the first primary resonance, most of the responses are aperiodic, including quasiperiodic and chaotic solutions. At the second primary resonance, the peak bends to the left with classical softening nonlinearity because clutch disengagement decouples the pulley and the accessory over portions of the response period. The dependence on system parameters such as clutch stiffness, excitation amplitude, and inertia ratio between the pulley and accessory is studied to characterize the nonlinear dynamics across a range of conditions.
