Axially Varying Vapor Superheats in Convective Film Boiling

Axially varying vapor superheats in convective film boiling have been measured for water flowing in a vertical tube at low to moderate pressures and mass flow rates. Using a slow “reflood” process, measurements of wall temperature and nonequilibrium vapor temperature were obtained as functions of distance from the quench front. With the low quench front velocity, the time required to progapate the front a few millimeters corresponds to many fluid residence times, and the thermal hydraulic data thus obtained are quasi-steady state. These experimental results indicate a zone near the quench front where the vapor generation rate is relatively high, followed by a far zone where the generation rate drops off to a relatively low magnitude. The data obtained agree with the very limited previously reported steady-state data. Comparison with existing heat transfer models shows the models give poor predictions of vapor superheats but reasonable predictions of wall heat fluxes.

We have developed an appropriate Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model for assessing the exposure to risk of tunnel users during their evacuation process in the event of fire. The effects on escaping users, which can be caused by fire from different types of vehicles located in various longitudinal positions within a one-way tunnel with natural ventilation only and length less than 1 km are shown. Simulated fires, in terms of maximum Heat Release Rate (HRR) are: 8, 30, 50, and 100 MW for two cars, a bus, and two types of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs), respectively. With reference to environmental conditions (i.e., temperatures, radiant heat fluxes, visibility distances, and CO and CO2 concentrations) along the evacuation path, the results prove that these are always within the limits acceptable for user safety. The exposure to toxic gases and heat also confirms that the tunnel users can safely evacuate. The evacuation time was found to be higher when fire was related to the bus, which is due to a major pre-movement time required for leaving the vehicle. The findings show that mechanical ventilation is not necessary in the case of the tunnel investigated. It is to be emphasized that our modeling might represent a reference in investigating the effects of natural ventilation in tunnels.

This paper presents isoenergetic temperature and steady-state film-cooled heat transfer coefficient measurements on the pressure surface of a modern, highly cambered transonic airfoil. A single passage model simulated the idealized two-dimensional flow path between blades in a modern transonic turbine. This set up offered a simpler construction than a linear cascade but produced an equivalent flow condition. Furthermore, this model allowed the use of steady-state, constant surface heat fluxes. We used wide-band thermochromic liquid crystals (TLCs) viewed through a novel miniature periscope system to perform high-accuracy (±0.2 °C) thermography. The peak Mach number along the pressure surface was 1.5, and maximum turbulence intensity was 30%. We used air and carbon dioxide as injectant to simulate the density ratios characteristic of the film cooling problem. We found significant differences between isoenergetic and recovery temperature distributions with a strongly accelerated mainstream and detached coolant jets. Our heat transfer data showed some general similarities with lower-speed data immediately downstream of injection; however, we also observed significant heat transfer attenuation far downstream at high blowing conditions. Our measurements suggested that the momentum ratio was the most appropriate variable to parameterize the effect of injectant density once jet lift-off occurred. We noted several nonintuitive results in our turbulence effect studies. First, we found that increased mainstream turbulence can be overwhelmed by the local augmentation of coolant injection. Second, we observed complex interactions between turbulence level, coolant density, and blowing rate with an accelerating mainstream.

In large, subcritical pressure, once-through power boilers heat is transferred to steam and water mixtures ranging in steam quality from zero per cent at the bottom of the furnace to 100 per cent at the top. In order to provide design information for this type of boiler, heat-transfer coefficients for forced convection film boiling were determined for water at 3000 psia flowing upward in a vertical stainless-steel tube, AISI Type 304, having an inside diameter of 0.408 inches and a heated length of 6 feet. Heat fluxes ranged between 90,000 and 180,000 Btu/hr-sq ft and were obtained by electrical resistance heating of the tube. The operation of the experimental equipment was controlled so that nucleate boiling, transition boiling, and stable film boiling occurred simultaneously in different zones of the tube. The film boiling data were correlated with a modified form of the equation Nu = a a(Re)m(Pr)n using steam properties evaluated at inside surface temperature. Results of a second series of heat-transfer tests with tubes having a helical rib on the inside surface showed that nucleate boiling could be maintained to much higher steam qualities with that type of tube than with a smooth-bore tube.

This paper presents the experimental and numerical investigation results of the convection heat transfer of CO2 at supercritical pressures in a 0.0992 mm diameter vertical tube at various inlet Reynolds numbers, heat fluxes and flow directions. The effects of buoyancy and flow acceleration resulted from the dramatic properties variation were investigated. Results showed that the local wall temperature varied non-linearly for both upward and downward flow when the heat flux was high. The difference of the local wall temperature between upward flow and downward flow was very small when other test conditions were held the same, which indicates that for supercritical CO2 flowing in a mini tube as employed in this study, the buoyancy effect on the convection heat transfer was quite insignificant, and the flow acceleration induced by the axial density variation with temperature was the main factor that lead to the abnormal local wall temperature distribution at high heat fluxes. The predicted values using the LB low Reynolds number turbulence model correspond well with the measured data. Velocity profiles and turbulence kinetic energy near the wall varying along the tube generated by the numerical simulations were presented to develop a better understanding.

The presented research demonstrates the results of a series of numerical simulations of gas flow through a single-stage centrifugal compressor with a vaneless diffuser. Numerical results were validated with experiments consisting of eight regimes with different mass flow rates. The steady-state and unsteady simulations were done in ANSYS FLUENT 13.0 and NUMECA FINE/TURBO 8.9.1 for one-period geometry due to periodicity of the problem. First-order discretization is insufficient due to strong dissipation effects. Results obtained with second-order discretization agree with the experiments for the steady-state case in the region of high mass flow rates. In the area of low mass flow rates, nonstationary effects significantly influence the flow leading stationary model to poor prediction. Therefore, the unsteady simulations were performed in the region of low mass flow rates. Results of calculation were compared with experimental data. The numerical simulation method in this paper can be used to predict compressor performance.

The present study deals with the application of the transient thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) technique in a flow network of intersecting circular passages as a potential internal turbine component cooling geometry. The investigated network consists of six circular passages with a diameter d = 20mm that intersect coplanar at an angle θ = 40°, the innermost in three, the outermost in one intersection level. Two additional non-intersecting passages serve as references. Such a flow network entails specific characteristics associated with the transient TLC method that have to be accounted for in the evaluation process: the strongly curved surfaces, the mixing and mass flow redistribution at each intersection point, and the resulting gradients between the wall and passage centerline temperatures. All this impedes the choice of a representative fluid reference temperature, which results in deviations using established evaluation methods. An alternative evaluation approach is introduced, which is supported by computational results obtained from steady-state three-dimensional RANS simulations using the SST turbulence model. The presented analysis uncouples local heat transfer coefficients from actually measured local temperatures but uses the time information of the thermocouples instead that represents the fluid temperature step change and evolution along the passages. This experimental time information is transferred to the steady-state numerical bulk temperatures, which are finally used as local references to evaluate the transient TLC experiments. As effective local mass flow rates in the passage sections are considered, the approach eventually allows for a conclusion whether heat transfer is locally enhanced due to higher mass flow rates or the intersection effects.
