The effect of a coating upon the short-time and steady-state constriction resistance is analyzed for an arbitrary axisymmetric contact spot flux. At very short times the expression obtained for R is identical to the expression for one-dimensional transient heat flow through a two-layer wall. At steady-state, the results of the analysis predict that the effect of the coating are mainly dependent on the relative thermal properties of the coating and substrate. The limiting cases, where the coating thickness approaches either zero or infinity, are discussed.

The heat sink with vertically rectangular interrupted fins was investigated numerically in a natural convection field, with steady-state heat transfer. A numerical study has been conducted using ANSYS Fluent software (R16.1) in order to develop a 3-D numerical model.  The dimensions of the fins are (305 mm length, 100 mm width, 17 mm height, and 9.5 mm space between fins. The number of fins used on the surface is eight. In this study, the heat input was used as follows: 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 watts. This study focused on interrupted rectangular fins with a different arrangement and angle of the fins. Results show that the addition of interruption in fins in various arrangements will improve the thermal performance of the heat sink, and through the results, a better interruption rate as an equation can be obtained.

Computational Fluid Dynamics is a fundamental tool to simulate the flow field and the multi-physics nature of the phenomena involved in gas turbine combustors, supporting their design since the very preliminary phases. Standard steady state RANS turbulence models provide a reasonable prediction, despite some well-known limitations in reproducing the turbulent mixing in highly unsteady flows. Their affordable cost is ideal in the preliminary design steps, whereas, in the detailed phase of the design process, turbulence scale-resolving methods (such as LES or similar approaches) can be preferred to significantly improve the accuracy. Despite that, in dealing with multi-physics and multi-scale problems, as for Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) in presence of radiation, transient approaches are not always affordable and appropriate numerical treatments are necessary to properly account for the huge range of characteristics scales in space and time that occur when turbulence is resolved and heat conduction is simulated contextually. The present work describes an innovative methodology to perform CHT simulations accounting for multi-physics and multi-scale problems. Such methodology, named U-THERM3D, is applied for the metal temperature prediction of an annular aeroengine lean burn combustor. The theoretical formulations of the tool are described, together with its numerical implementation in the commercial CFD code ANSYS Fluent. The proposed approach is based on a time de-synchronization of the involved time dependent physics permitting to significantly speed up the calculation with respect to fully coupled strategy, preserving at the same time the effect of unsteady heat transfer on the final time averaged predicted metal temperature. The results of some preliminary assessment tests of its consistency and accuracy are reported before showing its exploitation on the real combustor. The results are compared against steady-state calculations and experimental data obtained by full annular tests at real scale conditions. The work confirms the importance of high-fidelity CFD approaches for the aerothermal prediction of liner metal temperature.

The present work highlights the capacity of disparate lattice Boltzmann strategies in simulating natural convection and heat transfer phenomena during the unsteady period of the flow. Within the framework of Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook collision operator, diverse lattice Boltzmann schemes emerged from two different embodiments of discrete Boltzmann expression and three distinct forcing models. Subsequently, computational performance of disparate lattice Boltzmann strategies was tested upon two different thermo-hydrodynamics configurations, namely the natural convection in a differentially-heated cavity and the Rayleigh-Bènard convection. For the purposes of exhibition and validation, the steady-state conditions of both physical systems were compared with the established numerical results from the classical computational techniques. Excellent agreements were observed for both thermo-hydrodynamics cases. Numerical results of both physical systems demonstrate the existence of considerable discrepancy in the computational characteristics of different lattice Boltzmann strategies during the unsteady period of the simulation. The corresponding disparity diminished gradually as the simulation proceeded towards a steady-state condition, where the computational profiles became almost equivalent. Variation in the discrete lattice Boltzmann expressions was identified as the primary factor that engenders the prevailed heterogeneity in the computational behaviour. Meanwhile, the contribution of distinct forcing models to the emergence of such diversity was found to be inconsequential. The findings of the present study contribute to the ventures to alleviate contemporary issues regarding proper selection of lattice Boltzmann schemes in modelling fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena.

This work presents a data-driven Reduced-Order Model (ROM) for parametric convective heat transfer problems in porous media. The intrusive Proper Orthogonal Decomposition aided Reduced-Basis (POD-RB) technique is employed to reduce the porous medium formulation of the incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations coupled with heat transfer. Instead of resolving the exact flow configuration with high fidelity, the porous medium formulation solves a homogenized flow in which the fluid-structure interactions are captured via volumetric flow resistances with nonlinear, semi-empirical friction correlations. A supremizer approach is implemented for the stabilization of the reduced fluid dynamics equations. The reduced nonlinear flow resistances are treated using the Discrete Empirical Interpolation Method (DEIM), while the turbulent eddy viscosity and diffusivity are approximated by adopting a Radial Basis Function (RBF) interpolation-based approach. The proposed method is tested using a 2D numerical model of the Molten Salt Fast Reactor (MSFR), which involves the simulation of both clean and porous medium regions in the same domain. For the steady-state example, five model parameters are considered to be uncertain: the magnitude of the pumping force, the external coolant temperature, the heat transfer coefficient, the thermal expansion coefficient, and the Prandtl number. For transient scenarios, on the other hand, the coastdown-time of the pump is the only uncertain parameter. The results indicate that the POD-RB-ROMs are suitable for the reduction of similar problems. The relative L2 errors are below 3.34% for every field of interest for all cases analyzed, while the speedup factors vary between 54 (transient) and 40,000 (steady-state).

The influence of utilizing different nanofluids types on the liquid cold plate (LCP) is numerically investigated. The thermal and fluid flow performance of LCP is examined by using pure ethylene glycol (EG), Al2O3-EG and CuO-EG. The volume fraction of the nanoparticle for both nanofluid is 2%. The finite volume method (FVM) has been used to solved 3-D steady state, laminar flow and heat transfer governing equations. The presented results indicate that Al2O3-EG able to provide the lowest surface temperature of the heater block followed by CuO-EG and EG, respectively. It is also found that the pressure drop and friction factor are higher for Al2O3-EG and CuO-EG compared to the pure EG.

This paper presents isoenergetic temperature and steady-state film-cooled heat transfer coefficient measurements on the pressure surface of a modern, highly cambered transonic airfoil. A single passage model simulated the idealized two-dimensional flow path between blades in a modern transonic turbine. This set up offered a simpler construction than a linear cascade but produced an equivalent flow condition. Furthermore, this model allowed the use of steady-state, constant surface heat fluxes. We used wide-band thermochromic liquid crystals (TLCs) viewed through a novel miniature periscope system to perform high-accuracy (±0.2 °C) thermography. The peak Mach number along the pressure surface was 1.5, and maximum turbulence intensity was 30%. We used air and carbon dioxide as injectant to simulate the density ratios characteristic of the film cooling problem. We found significant differences between isoenergetic and recovery temperature distributions with a strongly accelerated mainstream and detached coolant jets. Our heat transfer data showed some general similarities with lower-speed data immediately downstream of injection; however, we also observed significant heat transfer attenuation far downstream at high blowing conditions. Our measurements suggested that the momentum ratio was the most appropriate variable to parameterize the effect of injectant density once jet lift-off occurred. We noted several nonintuitive results in our turbulence effect studies. First, we found that increased mainstream turbulence can be overwhelmed by the local augmentation of coolant injection. Second, we observed complex interactions between turbulence level, coolant density, and blowing rate with an accelerating mainstream.
