Experimental Study of Droplet Evaporation in a High-Temperature Air Stream

Heat transfer rates to simulated and freely suspended liquid droplets were measured in an atmospheric hot air tunnel. The experiments were limited to water, methanol, and heptane droplets in a Reynolds number range of 25 to 2000, and a mass transfer number range of 0.07 to 2.79. The present experimental data together with data by others can best be correlated by Nuf(1+Bf).7 = 2 + 0.57 ReM1/2 Prf1/3, where properties are evaluated at film conditions except for the density in the Reynolds number which is the free-stream density. Thus the data shows that at higher temperatures, evaporation reduces heat transfer rates directly by a factor of (1 + Bf).7. Indirectly, evaporation affects heat transfer rates through the changes in both the composition and temperature of the surrounding gaseous medium.

Numerical solutions for high-temperature air flowing past water and methanol droplets and solid spheres, and superheated steam flowing past water droplets were obtained in the Reynolds number range of 10 to 100. The coupled momentum, energy, and specie continuity equations of variable thermophysical properties were solved using finite difference techniques. The numerical results of heat transfer and total drag agree well with existing experimental data. Mass transfer decreases friction drag significantly but at the same time increases pressure drag by almost an equal amount. The net effect is that the standard drag curve for solid spheres can be used for evaporating droplets provided the density is the free stream density and the viscosity of the vapor mixture is evaluated at an appropriate reference temperature and concentration. Both the mass efflux and variable properties decrease heat transfer rates to the droplets.

Convective heat transfer from suddenly expanding annular pipe flows are numerically investigated within the steady laminar flow regime. A parametric study is performed to reveal the influence of the annular diameter ratio, k, the Prandtl number, Pr, and the Reynolds number, Re, over the following range of parameters: k = {0, 0.5, 0.7}, Pr = {0.7, 1, 7, 100}, and Re = {25, 50, 100}. Heat transfer enhancement downstream of the expansion plane is only observed for Pr > 1. Peak wall-heat-transfer-rates always appear downstream of the flow reattachment point, in the case of suddenly expanding round pipe flows, i.e. k = 0. However, for suddenly expanding annular pipe flows, i.e., k = 0.5 and 0.7, peak wall-heat-transfer-rates always appear upstream of the flow reattachment point. The observed heat transfer augmentation is more dramatic for suddenly expanding annular flows, in comparison with the one observed for suddenly expanding pipe flows. For a given annular diameter ratio and Reynolds number, increasing the Prandtl number, always results in higher wall-heat-transfer-rates downstream the expansion plane.

Heat transfer distributions are presented for a stationary three passage serpentine internal cooling channel for a range of engine representative Reynolds numbers. The spacing between the sidewalls of the serpentine passage is fixed and the aspect ratio (AR) is adjusted to 1:1, 1:2, and 1:6 by changing the distance between the top and bottom walls. Data are presented for aspect ratios of 1:1 and 1:6 for smooth passage walls and for aspect ratios of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:6 for passages with two surfaces turbulated. For the turbulated cases, turbulators skewed 45° to the flow are installed on the top and bottom walls. The square turbulators are arranged in an offset parallel configuration with a fixed rib pitch-to-height ratio (P/e) of 10 and a rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio (e/Dh) range of 0.100 to 0.058 for AR 1:1 to 1:6, respectively. The experiments span a Reynolds number range of 4,000 to 130,000 based on the passage hydraulic diameter. While this experiment utilizes a basic layout similar to previous research, it is the first to run an aspect ratio as large as 1:6, and it also pushes the Reynolds number to higher values than were previously available for the 1:2 aspect ratio. The results demonstrate that while the normalized Nusselt number for the AR 1:2 configuration changes linearly with Reynolds number up to 130,000, there is a significant change in flow behavior between Re = 25,000 and Re = 50,000 for the aspect ratio 1:6 case. This suggests that while it may be possible to interpolate between points for different flow conditions, each geometric configuration must be investigated independently. The results show the highest heat transfer and the greatest heat transfer enhancement are obtained with the AR 1:6 configuration due to greater secondary flow development for both the smooth and turbulated cases. This enhancement was particularly notable for the AR 1:6 case for Reynolds numbers at or above 50,000.

Abstract Turbulators are a promising avenue to enhance heat transfer in a wide variety of applications. An experimental and numerical investigation of heat transfer and pressure drop of a broken V (chevron) turbulator is presented at Reynolds numbers ranging from approximately 300,000 to 900,000 in a rectangular channel with an aspect ratio (width/height) of 1.29. The rib height is 3% of the channel hydraulic diameter while the rib spacing to rib height ratio is fixed at 10. Heat transfer measurements are performed on the flat surface between ribs using transient liquid crystal thermography. The experimental results reveal a significant increase of the heat transfer and friction factor of the ribbed surface compared to a smooth channel. Both parameters increase with Reynolds number, with a heat transfer enhancement ratio of up to 2.15 (relative to a smooth channel) and a friction factor ratio of up to 6.32 over the investigated Reynolds number range. Complementary CFD RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) simulations are performed with the κ-ω SST turbulence model in ANSYS Fluent® 17.1, and the numerical estimates are compared against the experimental data. The results reveal that the discrepancy between the experimentally measured area averaged Nusselt number and the numerical estimates increases from approximately 3% to 13% with increasing Reynolds number from 339,000 to 917,000. The numerical estimates indicate turbulators enhance heat transfer by interrupting the boundary layer as well as increasing near surface turbulent kinetic energy and mixing.

Convective heat transfer enhancement and pressure loss characteristics in a wide rectangular channel (AR = 4) with staggered pin fin arrays are investigated experimentally. Six sets of pin fins with the same nominal diameter (Dn = 8mm) are tested, including: Circular, Elliptic, Oblong, Dropform, NACA and Lancet. The relative spanwise pitch (S/Dn = 2) and streamwise pitch (X/Dn = 4.5) are kept the same for all six sets. Same nominal diameter and arrangement guarantee the same blockage area in the channel for each set. Reynolds number based on channel hydraulic diameter is from 10000 to 70000 with an increment of 10000. Using thermochromic liquid crystal (R40C20W), heat transfer coefficients on bottom surface of the channel are achieved. The obtained friction factor, Nusselt number and overall thermal performance are compared with the previously published data from other groups. The averaged Nusselt number of Circular pin fins is the largest in these six pin fins under different Re. Though Elliptic has a moderate level of Nusselt number, its pressure loss is next to the lowest. Elliptic pin fins have pretty good overall thermal performance in the tested Reynolds number range. When Re>40000, Lancet has a same level of performance as Circular, but its pressure loss is much lower than Circular. These two types are both promising alternative configuration to Circular pin fin used in gas turbine blade.

The baffling technique is well-known for its efficiency in terms of enhancement of heat transfer rates throught channels. However, the baffles insert is accompanied by an increase in the friction factor. This issue remains a great challenge for the designers of heat exchangers. To overcome this issue, we suggest in the present paper a new design of baffles which is here called graded baffle-design. The baffles have an up- or down-graded height along the channel length. This geometry is characterized by two ratios: up-graded baffle ratio and down-graded baffle ratio which are varied from 0-0.08. For a range of Reynolds number varying from 104 to 2 ? 104, the turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics of a heat exchanger channel are numerically studied by the computer code FLUENT. The obtained results revealed an enhancement in the thermohydraulic performance offered by the new suggested design. For the channel with a down-graded baffle ratio equal to 0.08, the friction factors decreased by 4-8%

Modern dry low emissions (DLE) combustors are characterized by highly swirling and expanding flows that makes the convective heat load on the gas side difficult to predict and estimate. A coupled experimental–numerical study of swirling flow inside a DLE annular combustor model is used to determine the distribution of heat transfer on the liner walls. Three different Reynolds numbers are investigated in the range of 210,000–840,000 with a characteristic swirl number of 0.98. The maximum heat transfer coefficient enhancement ratio decreased from 6 to 3.6 as the flow Reynolds number increased from 210,000 to 840,000. This is attributed to a reduction in the normalized turbulent kinetic energy in the impinging shear layer, which is strongly dependent on the swirl number that remains constant at 0.98 for the Reynolds number range investigated. The location of peak heat transfer did not change with the increase in Reynolds number since the flow structures in the combustors did not change with Reynolds number. Results also showed that the heat transfer distributions in the annulus have slightly different characteristics for the concave and convex walls. A modified swirl number accounting for the step expansion ratio is defined to facilitate comparison between the heat transfer characteristics in the annular combustor with previous work in a can combustor. A higher modified swirl number in the annular combustor resulted in higher heat transfer augmentation and a slower decay with Reynolds number.

Microfluidic cooling technologies for future electronic and photonic microsystems require more efficient flow configurations to improve heat transfer without a hydrodynamic penalty. Although conventional microchannel heat sinks are effective at dissipating large heat fluxes, their large pressure drops are a limiting design factor. There is some evidence in the literature that obstacles such as pillars placed in a microchannel can enhance downstream convective heat transfer with some increase in pressure drop. In this paper, measured head-loss coefficients are presented for a set of single microchannels of nominal hydraulic diameter 391μm and length 30mm, each containing a single, centrally-located cylindrical pillar covering a range of confinement ratios, β = 0.1–0.7, over a Reynolds number range of 40–1900. The increase in head-loss due to the addition of the pillar ranged from 143% to 479%, compared to an open channel. To isolate the influence of the pillar, the head-loss contribution of the open channel was extracted from the data for each pillar configuration. The data was curve-fitted to a decaying power-law relationship. High coefficients of determination were recorded with low root mean squared errors, indicating good fits to the data. The data set was surface-fitted with a power law relationship using the Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter. This was found to collapse the data well below a Reynolds number of 425 to an accuracy of ± 20%. Beyond this Reynolds number an inflection point was observed, indicating a change in flow regime similar to that of a cylinder in free flow. This paper gives an insight into the hydrodynamic behavior of a microchannel containing cylindrical pillars in a laminar flow regime, and provides a practical tool for determining the head-loss of a configuration that has been demonstrated to improve downstream heat transfer in microchannels.

A new experimental technique was used to investigate single fuel droplet combustion during forced convection: the burning droplet was freely suspended in the controlled air stream, without any additional support. Based on the photo-records of the burning process, the characteristics of the change of square of droplet diameter with time were made and the actual values of burning constants were determined for four hydrocarbon fuels: ben zene, n-heptane, iso-octane and toluene. The experiments were also carried out under micro-gravity and free convection conditions for the same set of fuels. The investigations have allowed the comparison of the burning mechanism of a single droplet for the three different external conditions and have compared quantitatively the burning constants. On the basis of the color pictures of the droplet burning under forced convection conditions and the temperature and gas concentration measurements within the flame, the mechanism of combus tion of fuel droplet was explained. The physical and mathematical models of the process have been proposed which included the aerodynamics of the droplet located in the high Reynolds number air stream, the energy balance of the evaporating droplet and the chemical reaction in the flow. The models have made it possible to determine the quantitative dependence of the burning con stant of different kinds of fuels on Reynolds number, the flow field parameters and the physical and chemical parameters of the liquid and its close surround ings. The calculated values of the parameters describing the burning pro cess have been compared to the experimental data and to the results reported by other investigators. The model has revealed the importance of the feed back mechanism between physical processes involved during droplet combus tion.

Measurements of the distribution of convective heat transfer over the five exposed faces of a low profile electronic package are described. The package, of square planform and length-to-height ratio, L/a = 6, is part of a regular array of such elements attached to one wall of a low aspect ratio channel. The coolant is air, and experiments are described for the Reynolds number range, 3000<Re<7000. The average heat transfer coefficient for the top face is found to be nearly equal to the overall average heat transfer coefficient for the element. The average heat transfer coefficient for the upstream face and two side faces are higher than the overall average by approximately 30–40 percent and 20–30 percent, respectively while that for the downstream face is 20–30 percent less than the overall average. Furthermore, the distribution in local heat transfer coefficient over the five surfaces of the element is approximately independent of variations in Reynolds number.
