Development of the Reattached Flow Behind Surface-Mounted Two-Dimensional Prisms

Velocity and turbulence measurements are presented for the region after reattachment behind a two dimensional surface-mounted prism of varying length. The prism is mounted on the floor of an open circuit blow down wind tunnel and flow parameters for the developing boundary layer are deduced from the measurements; longitudinal integral time and length scales are estimated through autocorrelations. Reattchment on top of the prism, due to its increased length, affects the characteristics of the developing boundary layer; in this case the shear layer originating from the up-stream edge of the prism splits twice at reattachment points on top and behind the prism and the integral length scales of the turbulent eddies are found to be smaller due to the splitting.

High freestream turbulence levels significantly alter the characteristics of turbulent boundary layers. Numerous studies have been conducted with freestreams having turbulence levels of 7 percent or less, but studies using turbulence levels greater than 10 percent have been essentially limited to the effects on wall shear stress and heat transfer. This paper presents measurements of the boundary layer statistics for the interaction between a turbulent boundary layer and a freestream with turbulence levels ranging from 10 to 20 percent. The boundary layer statistics reported in this paper include mean and rms velocities, velocity correlation coefficients, length scales, and power spectra. Although the freestream turbulent eddies penetrate into the boundary layer at high freestream turbulence levels, as shown through spectra and length scale measurements, the mean velocity profile still exhibits a log-linear region. Direct measurements of total shear stress (turbulent shear stress and viscous shear stress) confirm the validity of the log-law at high freestream turbulence levels. Velocity defects in the outer region of the boundary layer were significantly decreased resulting in negative wake parameters. Fluctuating rms velocities were only affected when the freestream turbulence levels exceeded the levels of the boundary layer generated rms velocities. Length scales and power spectra measurements showed large scale turbulent eddies penetrate to within y+ = 15 of the wall.

Wind is one of the important loads to be considered while designing the roofs of low-rise buildings. The structural designers refer to relevant code of practices of various countries dealing with wind loads while designing building roofs. However, available information regarding wind pressure coefficients on cylindrical roofs is limited to single span only. Information about wind pressure coefficients on multi-span cylindrical roofs is not available in standards on wind loads. Present paper describes the details of the experimental study carried out on the models of low-rise buildings with multi-span cylindrical roofs in an open circuit boundary layer wind tunnel. Wind pressure values are measured at many pressure points made on roof surface of the rigid models under varying wind incidence angles. Two cases namely, single-span and two-span are considered. The experimental results are presented in the form of contours of mean wind pressure coefficients. Results presented in the paper are of great use for the structural designers while designing buildings with cylindrical roofs. These values can also be used by the experts responsible for revising wind loading codes from time to time.

The two-dimensional analysis, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), of tandem/staggered arranged airfoils of the canard and wing of an Eagle 150 aircraft and also the aerodynamic tests conducted in an open-circuit wind tunnel are presented in the paper. The wind tunnel tests were carried out at a speed of 38m/s in a test section of size 300 mm (width), 300 mm (height) and 600 mm (length), at Reynolds number 2.25 × 105. The tests were carried out with tandem and staggered placement of the airfoils in order to determine the optimum position of the wing with respect to the canard and also to determine the lift coefficient at various angles of attack. The CFD code FLUENT 5 was used to investigate the aerodynamic performance of a two-dimensional model to validate the wind tunnel results. The flow interaction was studied in the tandem and staggered arrangements in the wind tunnel as well as by the computational method. The k-ε turbulence model gave exceptionally good results.

Wind speed and direction are important parameters in meteorological observation. Solid wind sensor has needed with small Quadcopter for boundary layer meteorological observation. In this paper the principle of a cylindrical two-dimensional wind sensor is reported by analyzing the data from wind tunnel experiments. A model is proposed to describe the distribution of the pressure difference across a diameter of a cylinder and the wind sensor is fabricated with MEMS differential pressure sensors. In wind tunnel tests in range of 1~40 m/s, the relative speed measuring errors and the direction measuring errors of the prototype are no more than ±(0.2 + 0.03 V) m/s and 5° respectively.

By making simple assumptions, an analytical theory is deduced for the mean velocity behind a two-dimensional obstacle (of heighth) placed on a rigid plane over which flows a turbulent boundary layer (of thickness δ). It is assumed thath[Gt ] δ, and that the wake can be divided into three regions. The velocity deficit −uis greatest in the two regions in which the change in shear stress is important, a wall region (W) close to the wall and a mixing region (M) spreading from the top of the obstacle. Above these is the external region (E) in which the velocity field is an inviscid perturbation on the incident boundary-layer velocity, which is taken to have a power-law profileU(y) =U∞(y−y1)n/δn, wheren[Gt ] 1. In (M), assuming that an eddy viscosity (=KhU(h)) can be defined for the perturbed flow in terms of the incident boundary-layer flow and that the velocity is self-preserving, it is found thatu(x,y) has the form$\frac{u}{U(h)} = \frac{ C }{Kh^2U^2(h)} \frac{f(n)}{x/h},\;\;\;\; {\rm where}\;\;\;\; \eta = (y/h)/[Kx/h]^{1/(n+2)}$, and the constant which defines the strength of the wake is$C = \int^\infty_0 y^U(y)(u-u_E)dy$, whereu=uE(x, y) asy→ 0 in region (E).In region (W),u(y) is proportional to Iny.By considering a large control surface enclosing the obstacle it is shown that the constant of the wake flow is not simply related to the drag of the obstacle, but is equal to the sum of the couple on the obstacle and an integral of the pressure field on the surface near the body.New wind-tunnel measurements of mean and turbulent velocities and Reynolds stresses in the wake behind a two-dimensional rectangular block on a roughened surface are presented. The turbulent boundary layer is artificially developed by well-established methods (Counihan 1969) in such a way that δ = 8h. These measurements are compared with the theory, with other wind-tunnel measurements and also with full-scale measurements of the wind behind windbreaks.It is found that the theory describes the distribution of mean velocity reasonably well, in particular the (x/h)−1decay law is well confirmed. The theory gives the correct self-preserving form for the distribution of Reynolds stress and the maximum increase of the mean-square turbulent velocity is found to decay downstream approximately as$ (\frac{x}{h})^{- \frac{3}{2}} $in accordance with the theory. The theory also suggests that the velocity deficit is affected by the roughness of the terrain (as measured by the roughness lengthy0) in proportion to In (h/y0), and there seems to be some experimental support for this hypothesis.

A commercial CFD program and boundary layer analysis are used to design the inlet of an open circuit wind tunnel for aerodynamic testing of full scale, class eight trucks. The goal of the study is to obtain the combination of wall shape, contraction length, and setting screens that provide a uniform velocity profile upstream of the vehicle under test. Thwaites method is used to verify that the boundary layer does not separate. Velocity field predictions upstream of the vehicle under test are presented for different design configurations of the inlet. A variation in the velocity magnitude of less than one percent outside of the boundary layer is achievable. The contraction introduces a weak secondary flow in the corners of the wind tunnel, but the cross stream components do not lead to significant distortion of the axial profile.
