Spray Photographs, Poppet Lift, and Injection Pressure of an Oscillating Poppet Injector

Sprays from an injector with a conical oscillating poppet and supplied with fuel at injection rates similar to those used in direct-injection stratified-charge engines have been characterized. Instantaneous injection pressure and poppet lift were measured and short-exposure backlit photographs were taken at several times during injection. Spray axial tip penetration and velocity were determined from the photographs. The experiments were conducted in a constant-volume pressure vessel. The gas was nitrogen and the liquid was hexane. The gas temperature was either 25° or 55°C. The experiments included a systematic variation of the ambient pressure, pump speed and injected liquid volume. It was found that the structure of the spray was strongly affected by the chamber pressure. The hollow cone collapsed and injection duration, spray axial initial velocity and tip penetration decreased with increasing chamber pressure. Increasing pump speed decreased both injection duration and number of oscillations.

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) has been widely used as an alternative fuel for gasoline and diesel vehicles in light of clean fuel and diversity of energy resources. But conventional LPG vehicles using carburetors or MPI fuel injection systems can’t satisfy the emissions regulations and CO2 targets of the future. Therefore, it is essential to develop LPG engines of spark ignition or compression ignition type such that LPG fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber under high pressure. A compression ignition engine using LPG is the ideal engine with many advantages of fuel economy, heat efficiency and low CO2, even though it is difficult to develop due to the unique properties of LPG. This paper reports on numerical and experimental studies related to LPG fuel for a compression ignition engine. The numerical analysis is conducted to study the combustion chamber shape with CATIA and to analyze the spray and fluid behaviors with FLUENT for diesel and LPG (n-butane 100%) fuels. In one experimental study, a constant volume chamber is used to observe the spray formation for the chamber pressure 0 to 3MPa and to analyze the flame process, P-V diagram, heat release rate and emissions through the combustion of LPG fuel with the cetane additive DTBP (Di-tert-butyl peroxide) 5 to 15 wt% at 25MPa of fuel injection pressure. In engine bench tests, experiments were performed to find the optimum injection timing, lambda, COV and emissions for the LPG fuel with the cetane additive DTBP 5 to 15 wt% at 25MPa fuel injection pressure and 1500 rpm. The penetration distance of LPG (n-butane 100%) was shorter than that of diesel fuel and LPG was sensitive to the chamber pressure. The ignition delay was in inverse proportion to the ambient pressure linearly. In the engine bench tests, the optimum injection timing of the test engine to the LPG fuel with DTBP 15 wt% was about BTDC 12° CA at all loads and 1500 rpm. An increasing of DTBP blending ratio caused the promotion of flame and fast burn and this lead to reduce HC and CO emissions, on the other hand, to increase NOx and CO2 emissions.

X-ray radiography was used to measure the behavior of four fuel sprays from a light-duty common-rail diesel injector. The sprays were at 250bar injection pressure and 1bar ambient pressure. Injection durations of 400μs and 1000μs were tested, as were axial single-hole nozzles with hydroground and nonhydroground geometries. The X-ray data provide quantitative measurements of the internal mass distribution of the spray, including near the injector orifice. Such measurements are not possible with optical diagnostics. The 400μs sprays from the hydroground and nonhydroground nozzles appear qualitatively similar. The 1000μs spray from the nonhydroground nozzle has a relatively consistent moderate width, while that from the hydroground nozzle is quite wide before transitioning into a narrow jet. The positions of the leading- and trailing-edges of the spray have also been determined, as has the amount of fuel residing in a concentrated structure near the leading edge of the spray.

The present experimental investigation aims at improving the combustion and performance parameters by varying the injection timing. A 3.5 kW single cylinder stationary CI engine equipped with eddy current dynamometer is used in this investigation. The static injection timing is varied using spill method by an advancement and retirement of 2 CAD with respect to standard injection timing of 23 BTDC. On comparison with the standard injection timing, the brake thermal efficiency, cylinder pressure, rate of heat release, mean gas temperature and rate of pressure rise are found to increase along with a significant decrease in brake specific fuel consumption for an advanced injection timing of 21 BTDC. Negative improvement is observed with respect to retarded injection timing of 25 BTDC. Optimum parameters for enhanced engine performance is found to be 21 BTDC injection timing with a 200 bar injection pressure at rated speed.

Recently, an in-cylinder injection method has been considered for the improvement of thermal efficiency in natural-gas and hydrogen spark-ignition (SI) engines. However, the SI and combustion processes of gaseous jets are not well understood. The present study aims to provide fundamental data for the development of direct-injection SI gas engines. The ignition, combustion, and flame behavior of high-pressure and intermittent hydrogen and natural-gas jets in a constant volume combustion chamber were investigated. The effects of injection pressure, nozzle size, ambient pressure, and spark location were also investigated for various spark timings and equivalence ratios.

Abstract Methanol fueled internal combustion (IC) engines have attracted significant attention due to their contributions in reducing environmental pollution and fossil fuel consumption. In this study, a single-cylinder research engine was operated on MD10 (10% (v/v) methanol blended with mineral diesel) and baseline mineral diesel to explore an optimized fuel injection strategy for efficient combustion and reduced emissions. The experiments were conducted at constant engine speed (1500 rpm) and load (3 kW) using two different fuel injection strategies, namely, single pilot injection (SPI) and double pilot injection (DPI) strategy. For each pilot fuel injection strategy, the start of main injection (SoMI) timing was varied from −3 to 6° crank angle (CA) before top dead center (bTDC). To examine the effect of fuel injection pressure (FIP), experiments were performed at three different FIPs (500, 750, and 1000 bars). Results showed that the MD10 fueled engine resulted in superior combustion compared with baseline mineral diesel, which was further improved by DPI at higher FIPs. The use of DPI strategy was found to be more effective at higher FIPs, resulting in higher brake thermal efficiency (BTE), lower exhaust gas temperature (EGT), and reduced oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions compared with SPI strategy. Detailed investigations showed that the addition of methanol in mineral diesel reduced particulates, especially the accumulation mode particles (AMP). Different statistical analysis and qualitative correlations between fuel injection parameters showed that higher FIP and advanced SoMI timings were suitable for particulate reduction from the MD10 fueled engine.

Background: The impulse for the propulsion of a rocket engine is obtained from the combustion of propellant mixture inside the combustion chamber and as the plume exhausts through a convergent- divergent nozzle. At stoichiometric ratio, the temperature inside the combustion chamber can be as high as 3500K. Thus, effective cooling of the thrust chamber becomes an essential criterion while designing a rocket engine. Objective: A new cooling method of thrust chambers was introduced by Chiaverni, which is termed as Vortex Combustion Cold-Wall Chamber (VCCW). The patent works on cyclone separators and confined vortex flow mechanism for providing high propellant mixing with improved degree of turbulence inside the combustion chamber, providing the required notion for studies on VCCW. The flow inside a VCCW has a complex structure characterised by axial pressure losses, swirl velocities, centrifugal force, flow reversal and strong turbulence. In order to study the flow phenomenon, both the experimental and numerical investigations are carried out. Methods: In this study, non-reactive flow analysis was conducted with real propellants like gaseous oxygen and hydrogen. The test was conducted to analyse the influence of mixture ratio and injection pressure of the propellants on the chamber pressure in a vortex combustion chamber. A vortex combustor was designed in which the oxidiser injected tangentially at the aft end near the nozzle spiraled up to the top plate and formed an inner core inside the chamber. The fuel was injected radially from injectors provided near the top plate and the propellants were mixed in the inner core. This resulted in enhanced mixing and increased residence time for the fuel. More information on the flow behaviour has been obtained by numerical analysis in Fluent. The test also investigated the sensitivity of the tangential injection pressure on the chamber pressure development. Results: All the test cases showed an increase in chamber pressure with the mixture ratio and injection pressure of the propellants. The maximum chamber pressure was found to be 3.8 bar at PC1 and 2.7 bar at PC2 when oxidiser to fuel ratio was 6.87. There was a reduction in chamber pressure of 1.1 bar and 0.7 bar at PC1 and PC2, respectively, in both the cases when hydrogen was injected. A small variation in the pressure of the propellant injected tangentially made a pronounced effect on the chamber pressure and hence vortex combustion chamber was found to be very sensitive to the tangential injection pressure. Conclusion: VCCW mechanism has been to be found to be very effective for keeping the chamber surface within the permissible limit and also reducing the payload of the space vehicle.

A spray-burning model (based on single-droplet theory) for heat release in a diesel engine is presented. Comparison of computations using this model and experimental data from an operating diesel engine indicate that heat release rates are not adequately represented by single-droplet burning rates. A new concept is proposed, i.e. a burning coefficient for a fuel spray. Comparisons between computations and experimental data indicate that the numerical value of this coefficient is nearly independent of engine speed and combustion-chamber pressure. However, the instantaneous value of the spray burning coefficient is approximately proportional to the instantaneous mass-averaged cylinder gas temperature to the one-third power.
