This paper presents a heat balance method of evaluating various open-cycle gas turbines and heat recovery systems based on the first law of thermodynamics. A useful graphic solution is presented that can be readily applied to various gas turbine cogeneration configurations. An analysis of seven commercially available gas turbines is made showing the effect of pressure ratio, exhaust temperature, intercooling, regeneration, and turbine rotor inlet temperature in regard to power output, heat recovery, and overall cycle efficiency. The method presented can be readily programmed in a computer, for any given gaseous or liquid fuel, to yield accurate evaluations. An X–Y plotter can be utilized to present the results.

The present work deals with the thermodynamic evaluation of combined cycle with re-heat in gas turbine using the latest gas turbines namely ABB GT26 gas turbine (advanced) in which reheat is used and the blade cooling is done by air bled from compressor. The same turbine is subjected to closed loop steam cooling. Parametric study has been performed on plant efficiency and specific work for various independent parameters such as turbine inlet temperature, compressor pressure ratio, reheating pressure ratio, reheater inlet temperature, blade temperature, etc.. It has been observed that due to higher compressor pressure ratio involved in reheat gas turbine combined cycle and higher temperature of exhaust, the plant efficiency and specific work are higher with the advanced reheat gas/steam combined cycle over the simple combined cycle. Steam cooling offers better performance over aircooling.

Complex open gas turbine cycles are analyzed by applying the heat balance method presented in Part I of this paper. Reheating, intercooling, regeneration, steam injection, and steam cooling are evaluated graphically to give a visual perspective of what takes place in terms of the overall heat balance when such complexities are introduced to the cycle. An example of a viable, new, intercooled regenerative cycle is given. A second example of a prototype reheat gas turbine is also included. The overall approach using the heat balance method can be applied to various cogeneration configurations when considering the more complex cycles of the future.

A series of operation tests of a ceramic micro gas turbine has been successfully carried out. The baseline machine is a small single-shaft turbojet engine (J-850, Sophia Precision Corp.) with a centrifugal compressor, an annular type combustor, and a radial turbine. As a first step, an Inconel 713C alloy turbine rotor of 55 mm in diameter was replaced with a ceramic rotor (SN-235, Kyocera Corporation). A running test was conducted at rotational speeds of up to 140,000 rpm in atmospheric air. At this rotor speed, the compression pressure ratio and the thrust were 3 and 100 N, respectively. The total energy level (enthalpy and kinetic energy) of the exhaust gas jet was 240 kW. If, for example, it is assumed that 10% of the total power of the exhaust jet gas was converted into electricity, the present system would correspond to a generator with 24 kW output power. The measured turbine outlet temperature was 950°C (1,740°F) and the turbine inlet temperature was estimated to be 1,280°C (2,340°F). Although the ceramic rotor showed no evidence of degradation, the Inconel nozzle immediately in front of the turbine rotor partially melted in this rotor condition. As a second step, the Inconel turbine nozzle and casing were replaced with ceramic parts (SN-01, Ohtsuka Ceramics Inc.). The ceramic nozzle and case were supported by metal parts. Through tests with the ceramic nozzle, it became evident that one of the key technologies for the development of ceramic gas turbines is the design of the interface between the ceramic components and the metallic components, because the difference between the coefficients of linear thermal expansion of the ceramic and metal produces large thermal stress at their interface in the high-temperature condition. A buffer material made of alumina fiber was therefore introduced at the interface between the ceramic and metal.

When low calorific value gases are fired, the performance and stability of gas turbines may deteriorate due to a large amount of inertballast and changes in working fluid properties. Since it is rather rare to have custom-built gas turbines for low lower heating value (LHV) operation, the engine will be forced to operate outside its design envelope. This, in turn, poses limitations to usable fuel choices. Typical restraints are decrease in Wobbe index and surge and flutter margins for turbomachinery. In this study, an advanced performance deck has been used to quantify the impact of firing low-LHV gases in a generic-type recuperated as well as unrecuperated gas turbine. A single-shaft gas turbine characterized by a compressor and an expander map is considered. Emphasis has been put on predicting the off-design behavior. The combustor is discussed and related to previous experiments that include investigation of flammability limits, Wobbe index, flame position, etc. The computations show that at constant turbine inlet temperature, the shaft power and the pressure ratio will increase; however, the surge margin will decrease. Possible design changes in the component level are also discussed. Aerodynamic issues (and necessary modifications) that can pose severe limitations on the gas turbine compressor and turbine sections are discussed. Typical methods for axial turbine capacity adjustment are presented and discussed.

Under the ongoing seven-year program, designated “Research and Development of Automotive Ceramic Gas Turbine Engine (CGT Program)”, started in June 1990. Japan Automobile Research Institute. Inc. (JARI) is continuing to address the issues of developing and demonstrating the advantageous potentials of ceramic gas turbines for automotive use. This program has been conducted by the Petroleum Energy Center (PEC) with the financial support of MITI. The basic engine is a 100 kW, single-shaft regenerative engine having a turbine inlet temperature of 1350°C and a rotor speed of 110,000 rpm. In the third year of this program, the experimental evaluation of the individual engine components and various assembly tests in a static thermal test rig were continued. Exhaust emissions were also measured in a performance test rig for an initially designed pre-mixed, pre-vaporized lean (PPL) combustor. A maximum speed of 130,700 rpm was obtained during hot spin tests of delivered ceramic turbine rotors, which was almost the same level as during cold spin tests. A dynamic thermal test including a centrifugal compressor, a ceramic radial turbine rotor and all the ceramic stationary hot parts was initiated.

Gas turbines furnished with heat recovery equipment generally have maximum cycle efficiency when the gas turbine is operated at its ambient capability. At reduced gas turbine output the cycle performance can fall off rapidly as gas turbine exhaust temperature drops, which reduces the heat recovery equipment performance. This paper reviews the economic gains which can be realized through use of several control modes which are currently available to optimize the cycle efficiency at part load operation. These include variable inlet guide vane (VIGV) control for single-shaft units, and combined VIGV and variable high-pressure set (compressor) speed control for two-shaft units. In addition to the normal control optimization mode to maintain the maximum exhaust temperature, a new control mode is discussed which allows airflow to be modulated in response to a process signal while at constant part load. This control feature is desirable for gas turbines which supply preheated combustion air to fired process heaters.

There are two different approaches to develop the gas turbines for power. One can get some megawatts by simple cycle or by more complex cycle units. Both units require very different levels of turbine inlet temperature and pressure ratio for the same unit capacity. Both approaches are discussed. These two approaches lead to different size and efficiencies of gas turbine units for power. Some features of the designing problems of such units are discussed.

Many factories in industry such as petrochemical plants, oil refineries and power plants need heat and power to support their process. This demand can be provided by a combined heat and power cycle (CHP) in the factory site. Some factories use gas turbine cycle to provide heat and power. Emissions from gas turbines, produced by burning fossil fuels in the combustion chambers, have important effects on air pollution. This is a significant problem in many developed and developing countries. Parameters such as inlet temperature and pressure ratio are the most effective parameters in gas turbine emission. By selecting an appropriate gas turbine, emission could be reduced to some extent. Further studies indicate that there is an optimum pressure ratio, which minimizes emissions.

Research and development of ceramic gas turbines (CGT), which is promoted by the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), was started in 1988. The target of the CGT project is development of a 300kW-class ceramic gas turbine with a 42 % thermal efficiency and a turbine inlet temperature (TIT) of 1350°C. Two types of CGT engines are developed in this project. One of the CGT engines, which is called CGT302, is a recuperated two-shaft gas turbine with a compressor, a gas-generator turbine, and a power turbine for cogeneration. In this paper, we describe the research and development of a compressor for the CGT302. Specification of this compressor is 0.89 kg/sec air flow rate and 8:1 pressure ratio. The intermediary target efficiency is 78% and the final target efficiency is 82%, which is the highest level in email centrifugal compressors like this one. We measured impeller inlet and exit flow distribution using three-hole yaw probes which were traversed from the shroud to the hub. Based on the measurement of the impeller exit flow, diffusers with a leading edge angle distribution adjusted to the inflow angle were designed and manufactured. Using this diffuser, we were able to attain a high efficiency (8:1 pressure ratio and 78% adiabatic efficiency).

In this article, the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and multiconfiguration gas-turbines are used to predict the optimal gas-turbine operating parameters. The principle formulations of gas-turbine configurations with various operating conditions are introduced in detail. The effects of different parameters have been analyzed to select the optimum gas-turbine configuration. The adopted ANFIS model has five inputs, namely, isentropic turbine efficiency (Teff), isentropic compressor efficiency (Ceff), ambient temperature (T1), pressure ratio (rp), and turbine inlet temperature (TIT), as well as three outputs, fuel consumption, power output, and thermal efficiency. Both actual reported information, from Baiji Gas-Turbines of Iraq, and simulated data were utilized with the ANFIS model. The results show that, at an isentropic compressor efficiency of 100% and turbine inlet temperature of 1900 K, the peak thermal efficiency amounts to 63% and 375 MW of power resulted, which was the peak value of the power output. Furthermore, at an isentropic compressor efficiency of 100% and a pressure ratio of 30, a peak specific fuel consumption amount of 0.033 kg/kWh was obtained. The predicted results reveal that the proposed model determines the operating conditions that strongly influence the performance of the gas-turbine. In addition, the predicted results of the simulated regenerative gas-turbine (RGT) and ANFIS model were satisfactory compared to that of the foregoing Baiji Gas-Turbines.
