An overview is presented of recent developments and the current status of several experimental mechanics methods, i.e., strain gages, moire´, photoelasticity, and interferometry. Examples of applications of these methods are given. Progress has been noted in all aspects, including methodology, data acquisition instrumentation, data processing, and range of applications. The trend is to tackle more difficult problems and to take full advantage of technological advances.

AbstractA short status update on the LOFAR Epoch of Reionization (EoR) Key Science Project (KSP) is given, regarding data acquisition, data processing and analysis, and current power-spectrum limits on the redshifted 21-cm signal of neutral hydrogen at redshiftsz= 8 − 10. With caution, we present a preliminary astrophysical analysis of ∼60 hr of processed LOFAR data and their resulting power spectrum, showing that potentially already interesting limits on X-ray heating during the Cosmic Dawn can already be gained. This is by no means the final analysis of this sub-set of data, but illustrates the future potential when all nearly 3000 hr of data in hand on two EoR windows will have been processed.

Abstract: Algae (both micro and macro) have gained huge attention in the recent past for their high commercial value products. They are the source of various biomolecules of commercial applications ranging from nutraceuticals to fuels. Phycobiliproteins are one such high value low volume compounds which are mainly obtained from micro and macro algae. In order to tap the bioresource, a significant amount of work has been carried out for large scale production of algal biomass. However, work on downstream processing aspects of phycobiliproteins (PBPs) from algae is scarce, especially in case of macroalgae. There are several difficulties in cell wall disruption of both micro and macro algae because of their cell wall structure and compositions. At the same time, there are several challenges in the purification of phycobiliproteins. The current review article focuses on the recent developments in downstream processing of phycobiliproteins (mainly phycocyanins and phycoerythrins) from micro and macroalgae. The current status, the recent advancements and potential technologies (that are under development) are summarised in this review article besides providing future directions for the present research area.

Data acquisition begins with the physical phenomenon or physical property to be measured. Examples of this include temperature, gas pressure, and light intensity, and force, fluid flow, regardless of the type of physical property to be measured. Physical property converted into digital, and then by the computer for storage, processing, display or printing process, the corresponding system is called data acquisition system. With the rapid development of computer technology, data acquisition systems quickly gained popularity. A variety of products based on digital technology have been created. Digital System spread quickly; it’s mainly the following two advantages: the first is the digital processing flexible and convenient; the second is a digital system is very reliable. The main idea of Reconfigurable computing technology [1] is using the FPGA [2][3] allows the system has a dynamically configurable capacity, suitable for harsh environment applications, improve the speed of data processing. By the use of dynamic reconfigurable FPGA devices can be realized on the hardware logic function modification, application of reconfigurable computing technology can improve the speed of data processing. Data acquisition system is widely applied in many fields, and often used the abominable working environment place. The reconfigurable computing technology, can greatly improve the data acquisition system reliability and safety. The paper introduces a kind of multi-channel data acquisition system based on USB bus and FPGA, the factors affecting the performance of system are discussed, and describes how to use reconfigurable computing technology to improve the efficiency of data acquisition system while reduce energy consumption. The system in this paper uses AD's AD9220, ALTERA's EP1C6-8 and IDT's IDT70V24, Cypress’s CY7C68013.

Propulsion shaft alignment is a necessary and crucial step in the ship construction process, with manning and schedule constraints requiring accurate results as efficiently as possible. There are two methods for measuring the bearing loading along the shaft line: strain gages and load cells. The legacy method for using strain gages required a lot of man power and the legacy method for using load cells was dependent on the quality of machinist made available. Strain gages are the transducers of choice for measurement; however the data acquisition, especially for ships with long shafting systems, can require many strain gage positions and personnel to conduct tests. Load cells are used to validate the accuracy of the strain gage method and to calculate the shaft runout at each bearing location.

Abstract There is a national drive to increase PhD production, yet we know little about how this imperative takes shape within different disciplines. We therefore set out to explore recent developments and the current status of the PhD in economics at four South African research-intensive universities. A data set of all economics PhDs produced in these commerce faculties during the period 2008–2014 was analysed to determine whether the departments of economics responded to the call for increased doctoral production, and the role the PhD by publication might have played in the process. How an increase in quantity might influence doctoral education in the respective academic departments was also considered by supplementing the quantitative data with perspectives from heads of department at the four institutions. The notable increase in doctoral production over the time period studied shows that national and international trends have influenced doctoral education in economics departments within South African research-intensive universities. Increased usage of the PhD by publication has implications for policy and pedagogical practice within these departments, especially as there seems to be limited available supervisory capacity. Other changes in departmental practices, such as the entrenchment of a research culture and the promotion of collaborative research amongst students and staff, also contributed to maintain quality in doctoral education.

Abstract. The Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment-2 (GOME-2) flies on the Metop series of satellites, the space component of the EUMETSAT Polar System. In this paper we will provide an overview of the instrument design, the on-ground calibration and characterization activities, in-flight calibration, and level 0 to 1 data processing. The current status of the level 1 data is presented and points of specific relevance to users are highlighted. Long-term level 1 data consistency is also discussed and plans for future work are outlined. The information contained in this paper summarizes a large number of technical reports and related documents containing information that is not currently available in the published literature. These reports and documents are however made available on the EUMETSAT web pages and readers requiring more details than can be provided in this overview paper will find appropriate references at relevant points in the text.

Resistance strain force sensors have been applied to monitor the strains in various parts and structures for industrial use. Here, we review the working principles, structural forms, and fabrication processes for resistance strain gauges. In particular, we focus on recent developments in resistance stress transfer for resistance strain force sensors and the creep effect due to sustained loads and/or temperature variations. Various error compensation methods to reduce the creep effect are analyzed to develop a metrology standard for resistance strain force sensors. Additionally, the current status of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), silicon carbide (SiC), gallium nitride (GaN), and other wide band gap semiconductors for a wide range of strain sensors are reviewed. The technical requirements and key issues of resistance strain force sensors for future applications are presented.

Ethanol produced from various biobased sources (bioethanol) has been gaining high attention lately due to its potential to cut down net emissions of carbon dioxide while reducing burgeoning world dependence on fossil fuels. Global ethanol production has increased more than six-fold from 18 billion liters at the turn of the century to 110 billion liters in 2019 (1,2). Sugar cane and corn have been used as the major feedstocks for ethanol production. Lignocellulosic biomass has recently been considered as another potential feedstock. This paper reviews recent developments and current status of commercial production of ethanol across the world. The review includes the ethanol production processes used for each type of feedstock, both currently practiced at commercial scale and newly developed technologies, and production trends in various regions and countries in the world.
