Research on Inverse Design and Optimization in Germany

This article tries to illustrate efforts to develop and apply design and optimization methods in German universities, research institutes and the aerospace industry. Applications are shown solely in turbomachinery and aircraft aerodynamics. With restriction to aerodynamic problems, it is shown that efforts to improve theoretical models to become knowledge-based computational tools overlap with operational methods based on the designer’s experience but resulting in hardware concepts for next generation aircraft components.

Abstract The aerospace industry, along with other industries, has acknowledged the need to bridge the experience gap between novice and experienced designers [Moore, 1997]. The research aims to identify the support a novice designer requires to gain experience faster. The focus of this paper is to present some initial results of a study of novice and experienced designers. This initial study highlighted the difficulty in establishing consistent and precise usage for the terms data, information and knowledge. It is concluded that data, information and knowledge are relative concepts that cannot be defined in absolute terms. As relative concepts, these help differentiate experts and novices, and different types of novices. The relationships between data, information and knowledge are examined with the aim of prompting a discussion.

Abstract This paper describes a system for parametric design and optimization of complex products. In the system, the use of knowledge-based and mathematical programming methods is combined. The motivation is that while knowledge-based methods are well suited for modeling products, they are insufficient when dealing with design problems that can be given an optimization formulation. This weakness was approached by including the information necessary for stating an optimization problem in the product models. A system optimization method can then be applied. The system also performs sensitivity analysis and has an interactive optimization module. The use of the system is illustrated by an example; the design and optimization of a two-speed gearbox.

Tourism is like a two edge sword which has both positive and negative consequences. Such a drift of tourism is found applicable in all destinations big or small, old or new. Nevertheless, the development intervention of new destinations with the sustainable tourism maxim from the very beginning can be much rewarding than a mass tourism induced mature destinations. Ghodaghodi Lake Area (GLA), a new tourist destination in Ghodaghodi Municipality (GM) of Kailali, extending to 2,726 hector of wetland with its designation as a Ramasar site, constitutes immense potential for prosperity through the sustainable tourism operation and management from its existing tourism offerings like lake viewing hiking, trekking, bird watching, and religious tourism activities. In this context, this paper aims to shed light on how a new destination like GLA is embedded with a number of challenges for sustainable tourism issues and what can be its remedy from sustainable tourism perspective. Developed through mix methods (qualitative and quantitative) of research, this paper has embedded its findings with the four progressive theoretical models (advocacy, cautionary, adaptability, and knowledge based platforms) as sustainable tourism. The poorly equipped infrastructures, lack of planned development activities, meager institutional capacity, and inadequate marketing have been pointed out as the drawback. This paper recommends that the formulation of a holistic plan of actions in the form of tourism master plan consisting of a self sustaining revenue model and its sincere application is the bottom-line to address sustainable tourism appliance challenges.

A summary of recent research in the field of inverse design and optimization of coolant flow passages in the internally cooled configurations is presented. The methodology allows design engineers to prescribe desired surface temperature and heat flux distributions and to fix portions of the multiply connected realistically shaped configurations. The shapes of the resulting coolant flow passages can be arbitrarily or circularly shaped with a capability to maintain certain manufacturing geometric constraints. Unsteady cooling of organs and tissues in bioengineering is demonstrated by determining optimal time variation of thermal boundary conditions on the walls of the cooling container while maintaining the geometry and size of the configuration. Another concept suggests that components subjected to strong unsteady cooling or heating can be optimized for the desired time dependent overspecified surface thermal conditions by determining the corresponding instantaneous temperatures of the coolant flow passages. This effect can be achieved by applying optimal control of distributed coolant flow rates in each flow passage.
