Lateral Dynamics of a Rail Transit Vehicle: A Comparison of Experimental and Theoretical Results

A subway rail vehicle was tested on tangent and curved track sections to provide dynamics data for validation of theoretical models. Tests were done with three combinations of primary suspension and wheel profiles which were selected using a simplified truck stability/curving trade off analysis. The test results of one configuration are compared with two lateral dynamic models. Experimental frequency and damping results are compared with the predictions of a linear Lateral Stability model for a number of vehicle speeds. The measured time histories of vehicle responses on a spiral and a 122 m (400 ft) radius curve are compared with the results obtained from a Curve Entry Dynamics model. The agreement between theory and experiment varied from good to poor depending on the parameter being compared. The discrepancies between theory and experiment can be attributed to four major sources: limitations of models, errors in vehicle parameters used in obtaining theoretical results, measurement errors and data analysis limitations.

This paper presents numerical simulations of Green Water events and wave impact on a FPSO. The simulations are performed at model scale and the results are compared against experimental model test results. The commercial Star-CCM+ CFD software is used in the simulations. The incoming waves are modeled using 5th order Stokes theory, as implemented in the CFD software. Both fixed and free floating FPSO are considered. The moving FPSO are modeled using Chimera overset mesh technology. The vessels is free to move in heave and pitch at 180 (head sea), roll and heave at 270 (beam sea), while roll, pitch and heave is released at 225 (quartering sea). The computed water height on the deck and the relative wave height in vicinity the vessel are compared against model test results at several positions. Also the impact force on load cells blocks located at the deck of the vessel is computed and compared against model test results. The comparison of the time histories of the water elevation and load histories are in reasonable agreement with the measured time series. The number of grid cells range from 7M for the simulations at head sea, where flow is assumed to be symmetric, to 21M for the simulations at quartering sea. Total wall clock simulation time was about 10days for the most computationally demanding cases, which are the quartering sea simulations. This includes simulation of 12 wave periods with the ship fixed, and thereafter 8 wave periods of the free floating vessel. The computations show that CFD tools can be used as a research tool when studying the physics of green water and wave impact events. However, due to time CPU demanding simulations, this type of CFD analysis are not yet a practical tool for parametric design studies and deck structure optimizations. Abstract In a Diamond–Dybvig type model of financial intermediation, we allow depositors to announce at a positive cost to subsequent depositors that they keep their funds deposited in the bank. Theoretically, the mere availability of public announcements (and not its use) ensures that no bank run is the unique equilibrium outcome. Multiple equilibria—including bank run—exist without such public announcements. We test the theoretical results in the lab and find a widespread use of announcements, which we interpret as an attempt to coordinate on the no bank run outcome. Withdrawal rates in general are lower in information sets that contain announcements.

Vibration is one of the most important problems in laser cutting machine tool, which causes the manufacturing errors, also influences the machining accuracy of the parts. Modal analysis can calculate vibration type of structures. The paper presents how to use the powerful FEA software ANSYS to do the modal analysis on laser cutting machine tool and also studies the undamped free vibration on laser cutting machine tool. Finally, the test results and theoretical results were compared to verify the rationality of the modal, these provide theoretical base and conditions for dynamics analysis and optimal design.

This study investigated the vibrational behaviour of a rotating two-blade propeller at different rotational speeds by using self-tracking laser Doppler vibrometry. Given that a self-tracking method necessitates the accurate adjustment of test setups to reduce measurement errors, a test table with sufficient rigidity was designed and built to enable the adjustment and repair of test components. The results of the self-tracking test on the rotating propeller indicated an increase in natural frequency and a decrease in the amplitude of normalized mode shapes as rotational speed increases. To assess the test results, a numerical model created in ABAQUS was used. The model parameters were tuned in such a way that the natural frequency and associated mode shapes were in good agreement with those derived using a hammer test on a stationary propeller. The mode shapes obtained from the hammer test and the numerical (ABAQUS) modelling were compared using the modal assurance criterion. The examination indicated a strong resemblance between the hammer test results and the numerical findings. Hence, the model can be employed to determine the other mechanical properties of two-blade propellers in test scenarios.

A dual rotor rig is developed and is briefly discussed. The rig is capable of simulating dynamically the two spool aeroengine, though it does not physically resemble the actual aeroengine configuration. Critical speeds, mode shape, and unbalance response are determined experimentally. An extended transfer matrix procedure in complex variables is developed for obtaining unbalance response of dual rotor system. Experimental results obtained are compared with theoretical results and are found to be in reasonable agreement.

<p>The standard creep and shrinkage strain measurements of concrete are usually conducted in a laboratory with constant temperature and humidity with a low variation. The creep and shrinkage measurements are conducted over a few months with the expectation that small concrete specimens can sufficiently describe the evolution of the rheology effects on a large multi-span bridge in the course of its operating life.</p><p>The monitoring of real bridge structures shows the actual progression of the deflections and concrete strains. Unfortunately the evaluation and interpretation of the measured values is complicated. The idea of the scientific Creep &amp; Shrinkage project was to combine the two described situations (laboratory experiments and monitoring of real bridge structures) creating an experimental setup which would benefit from the advantages of both approaches.</p><p>In order to achieve conformity of the measured test results with those of theoretical models (MC 2010, EC) it was necessary to upgrade the current models to include the effects of changing temperature and humidity. Within this paper the upgrade of the current standard models to include changing environment conditions will be elaborated, in addition to an explanation of the method used to separate shrinkage strains from the temperature strains from the measured data. The measured concrete expansion coefficients will also be discussed.</p>

The paper describes a method for prediction of large container ship extreme roll angles occurring during sailing in harsh weather. Rolling is coupled with other ship motions and exhibits highly nonlinear behavior. Risk of losing containers due to a large roll is primary concern for ship transport. Because of non-stationarity and complicated nonlinearities of both waves and ship motions, it is a considerable challenge to model such a phenomenon. In case of extreme motions, the role of nonlinearities dramatically increases, activating effects of second and higher order. Moreover, laboratory tests may also be questioned because of the scaling and the sea state choice. Therefore, data measured on actual ships during their voyages in harsh weather provide a unique insight into statistics of ship motions. The aim of this work is to benchmark state of art method, which makes it possible to extract the necessary information about the extreme response from onboard measured time histories. The method proposed in this paper opens up the possibility to predict simply and efficiently both short- and long-term extreme response statistics.

<p>The performance of suspension bridges exposed to fire hazards is severely under-studied – so much so that no experimental data exists to quantify the safety of a suspension bridge during or after a major fire event. Bridge performance and safety rely on the integrity of the main cable and its constituent high-strength steel wires. Due to the current lack of experimental high temperature data for wires, the theoretical models use properties and coefficients from data for other types of structural steel. No other structural steel undergoes the amount of cold-working that bridge wire does, and plastic strains from cold-working can be relieved at high temperature, drastically weakening the steel. As such, this work determines the elastic modulus, ultimate strength, and general thermo-mechanical profile of the high-strength steel wires in a range of elevated temperature environments. Specifically, these tests are conducted on a bundle of 61-wires (transient), and at the single wire level (steady-state) at a temperature range of approximately 20-700°C. The test results show an alarmingly high reduction in the elastic modulus and ultimate strength with increased temperature. The degradation shown by experiments is higher than predicted by current theoretical models, indicating that use of high-temperature properties of other types of steel is not sufficient. The test results also show scaling agreement between the single wire and the 61-wire bundle, implying that a full material work up at the single- wire level will accurately inform the failure characterization of the full cable.</p>

Abstract The oscillator strengths of the valence-shell excitations of C2H2 are extremely important for testing theoretical models and studying interstellar gases. In this study, the high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) method is adopted to determine the generalized oscillator strengths (GOSs) of the valence-shell excitations of C2H2 at a photon energy of 10 keV. The GOSs are extrapolated to their zero limit to obtain the corresponding optical oscillator strengths (OOSs). Through taking a completely different experimental method of the IXS, the present results offer the high energy limit for electron collision to satisfy the first Born approximation (FBA) and cross-check the previous experimental and theoretical results independently. The comparisons indicate that an electron collision energy of 1500 eV is not enough for C2H2 to satisfy the FBA for the large squared momentum transfer, and the line saturation effect limits the accuracy of the OOSs measured by the photoabsorption method.

As the first of two companion papers, theoretical models are proposed to describe the motions of free falling wedges vertically entering the water surface at Froude numbers: 1 ≤ Fn < 9 (Here, the Froude number is defined as Fn=V0/gc0). The time evolutions of the penetration depth, the velocity and the acceleration are analyzed and expressed explicitly The maximum and average accelerations are predicted. The drag (slamming) coefficients are extensively studied. It is found that for the light wedge the transient drag coefficients have slow variation in the first half stage and rapid variation in the last half stage, and for the heavy wedge the transient drag coefficients vary slowly during the whole stage and can be treated as constant. The theoretical results are compared with numerical simulations by nonlinear BEM (Wang & Faltinsen (2010, 2013)), and good agreements are obtained.
