An Innovative Gas Turbine Cycle With Methanol-Fueled Chemical-Looping Combustion

In this paper, a novel gas turbine cycle integrating methanol decomposition and the chemical-looping combustion (CLC) is proposed. Two types of methanol-fueled power plants, including the new gas turbine cycle with CLC combustion and a chemically intercooled gas turbine cycle, have been investigated with the aid of the T-Q diagram. In the proposed system, methanol fuel is decomposed into syngas mainly containing H2 and CO by recovering low-temperature thermal energy from an intercooler of the air compressor. After the decomposition of methanol, the resulting product of syngas is divided into two parts: the part reacting with Fe2O3 is sent into the CLC subsystem, and the other part is introduced into a supplement combustor to enhance the inlet temperatures of the gas turbine to 1100–1500°C. As a result, the new methanol-fueled gas turbine cycle with CLC had a breakthrough in thermodynamic and environmental performance. The thermal efficiency of the new system can achieve 60.6% with 70% of CO2 recovery at a gas turbine inlet temperature of 1300°C. It would be expected to be at least about 10.7 percentage points higher than that of the chemically intercooled gas turbine cycle with the same recovery of CO2 and is environmentally superior due to the recovery of CO2. The promising results obtained here indicated that this novel gas turbine cycle with methanol-fueled chemical-looping combustion could provide a promising approach of both effective use of alternative fuel and recovering low-temperature waste heat and offer a technical probability of blending a combination of the chemical-looping combustion and the advanced gas turbine for carbon capture and storage.

The promising results obtained here indicated that this novel gas turbine cycle with methanol-fuelled chemical looping combustion could provide a promising approach of both effective use of alternative fuel and recovering low-grade waste heat, and offer a technical probability for CLC in applying into the advanced gas turbine with high temperatures above 1300°C.

In this paper, a new solar hybrid gas turbine cycle integrating ethanol-fueled chemical-looping combustion (CLC) has been proposed, and the system was investigated with the aid of the Energy-Utilization Diagram (EUD). Chemical-looping combustion consists of two successive reactions: first, ethanol fuel is oxidized by metal oxide (NiO) as an oxygen carrier (reduction of metal oxide); secondly, the reduced metal (Ni) is successively oxidized by combustion air (the oxidation of metal). The reduction of NiO with ethanol requires a relative low-grade thermal energy at 150–200°C. Then concentrated solar thermal energy at approximately 200–300°C can be utilized to provide the process heat for this reaction. The integration of solar thermal energy and CLC could make the exergy efficiency and the net solar-to-electric efficiency of the system more than 54% and 28% at a turbine inlet temperature (TIT) of 1288°C, respectively. At the same time, the variation in the overall thermal efficiency (η) of the system with varying key parameters was analyzed, such as Turbine Inlet Temperature, pressure ratio (π) and the temperature of reduction reactor. Additionally, preliminary experiments on ethanol-fueled chemical-looping combustion are carried out to verify the feasibility of the key process. The promising results obtained here indicate that this novel gas turbine cycle with ethanol-fueled chemical-looping combustion could provide a promising approach of both efficient use of alternative fuel and low-temperature solar thermal and offer a technical probability of combining the chemical-looping combustion with inherent CO2 capture for the alternative fuel.

A thermodynamic model and parametric analysis of a natural gas-fired power plant with carbon dioxide (CO2) capture using multistage chemical looping combustion (CLC) are presented. CLC is an innovative concept and an attractive option to capture CO2 with a significantly lower energy penalty than other carbon-capture technologies. The principal idea behind CLC is to split the combustion process into two separate steps (redox reactions) carried out in two separate reactors: an oxidation reaction and a reduction reaction, by introducing a suitable metal oxide which acts as an oxygen carrier (OC) that circulates between the two reactors. In this study, an Aspen Plus model was developed by employing the conservation of mass and energy for all components of the CLC system. In the analysis, equilibrium-based thermodynamic reactions with no OC deactivation were considered. The model was employed to investigate the effect of various key operating parameters such as air, fuel, and OC mass flow rates, operating pressure, and waste heat recovery on the performance of a natural gas-fired power plant with multistage CLC. The results of these parameters on the plant's thermal and exergetic efficiencies are presented. Based on the lower heating value, the analysis shows a thermal efficiency gain of more than 6 percentage points for CLC-integrated natural gas power plants compared to similar power plants with pre- or post-combustion CO2 capture technologies.

This paper describes an extension of a novel, carbon-burning, fluid phase chemical looping combustion system proposed previously. The system generates both power and H2 with ‘inherent’ carbon capture using chemical looping combustion (CLC) to perform the main energy release from the fuel. A mixed Pb and Zn based oxygen carrier is used, and due to the thermodynamics of the carbothermic reduction of PbO and ZnO respectively, the system generates a flue gas which consists of a mixture of CO2 and CO. By product H2 is generated from this flue gas using the water-gas shift reaction (WGSR). By varying the proportion of Pb to Zn circulating in the chemical loop, the ratio of CO2 to CO can be controlled, which in turn enables the ratio between the amount of H2 produced to the amount of power generated to be adjusted. By this means, the power output from the system can be ‘turned down’ in periods of low electricity demand without requiring plant shutdown. To facilitate the adjustment of the Pb/Zn ratio, use is made of the two metal’s mutual insolubility, as this means they form in to two liquid layers at the base of the reduction reactor. The amount of Pb and Zn rich liquid drawn from the two layers and subsequently circulated around the system is controlled thereby varying the Pb/Zn ratio. To drive the endothermic reduction of ZnO formed in the oxidiser, hot Zn vapour is ‘blown’ into the reducer where it condenses, releasing latent heat. The Zn vapour to produce this ‘blast’ of hot gas is generated in a flash vessel fed with hot liquid metal extracted from the oxidiser. A mass and energy balance has been conducted for a power system, operating on the Pb/Zn cycle. In the analysis, reactions are assumed to reach equilibrium and losses associated with turbomachinery are considered; however, pressure losses in equipment and pipework are assumed to be negligible. The analysis reveals that a power system with a second law efficiency of between 62% and 68% can be constructed with a peak turbine inlet temperature of only ca. 1850 K. The efficiency varies as the ratio between power and H2 production varies, with the lower efficiency occurring at the maximum power output condition.

Chemical-looping combustion holds significant promise as one of the next generation combustion technology for high-efficiency low-cost carbon capture from fossil fuel power plants. For thorough understanding of the chemical-looping combustion process and its successful implementation in CLC based industrial scale power plants, the development of high-fidelity modeling and simulation tools becomes essential for analysis and evaluation of efficient and cost effective designs. In this paper, multiphase flow simulations of coal-direct chemical-looping combustion process are performed using ANSYS Fluent CFD code. The details of solid-gas two-phase hydrodynamics in the CLC process are investigated by employing the Lagrangian particle-tracking approach called the discrete element method (DEM) for the movement and interaction of solid coal particles moving inside the gaseous medium created due to the combustion of coal particles with an oxidizer. The CFD/DEM simulations show excellent agreement with the experimental results obtained in a laboratory scale fuel reactor in cold flow conditions. More importantly, simulations provide important insights for making changes in fuel reactor configuration design that have resulted in significantly enhanced performance.

As global power generation is currently relying on fossil fuel-based power plants, more anthropogenic CO2 is being released into the atmosphere. During the transition period to alternative energy sources, carbon capture and storage seems to be a promising solution. Chemical-looping combustion (CLC) is an energy conversion technology designed for combustion of fossil fuel with advantageous carbon capture capabilities. In this work, a 1D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) multiscale model was developed to study the reduction step in a syngas-based CLC system and was validated using literature data (R=0.99). In order to investigate mass transfer effects, flow rate and particle dimension studies were carried out. Sharper mass transfer rates were seen at lower flow rates and smaller granule sizes due to suppression of diffusion limitations. In addition, a 3D CFD particle model was developed to investigate in depth the reduction within an ilmenite particle, with focus on heat transfer effects. Minor differences of 1 K were seen when comparing temperature changes predicted by the two models during the slightly exothermic reduction reaction with syngas.

A novel solar-hybrid gas turbine combined cycle was proposed. The cycle integrates methanol-fueled chemical-looping combustion and solar thermal energy at around 200°C, and it was investigated with the aid of the Energy-Utilization Diagram (EUD). Solar thermal energy, at approximately 150°C–300°C, is utilized to drive the reduction of Fe2O3 with methanol in the reduction reactor, and is converted into chemical energy associated with the solid fuel FeO. Then it is released as high-temperature thermal energy during the oxidation of FeO in the oxidation reactor to generate electricity through the combined cycle. As a result, the exergy efficiency of the proposed solar thermal cycle may reach 58.4% at a turbine inlet temperature (TIT) of 1400°C, and the net solar-to-electric efficiency would be expected to be more than 30%. The promising results obtained here indicate that this solar-hybrid combined cycle not only offers a new approach for highly efficient use of middle-and-low temperature solar thermal energy to generate electricity, but also provides the possibility of simultaneously utilizing renewable energy and alternative fuel for CO2 capture with low energy penalty.

Efficiency improvement in the gas turbine sector has been mainly driven by increasing the turbine inlet temperature and compressor pressure ratio. For a fixed technology level, a further efficiency gain can be achieved through the utilization of waste thermal energy. Regeneration is an internal recovery technique that allows the reduction of heat input required at combustor, by preheating the air at compressor outlet. Under certain operating conditions, the temperature of exhaust gas leaving the regenerator is still enough high to allow the steam production via an heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). Regeneration in steam-gas power plants (CCGT) has the potential to enhance thermal efficiency, but reduces the margins for external recovery and then the bottoming steam cycle capacity. Moreover, the reduction of exhausts temperature at gas turbine outlet requires the reconsideration of HRSG operating parameters, in order to limit the increase of waste heat at the stack. The aim of this study is to explore the potential benefits that regeneration in the gas cycle gives on the whole steam-gas power plant. The extent of energy and economic performances improvement is evaluated, varying the gas turbine specifications and the layout and operating conditions of HRSG. Hence simple and regenerative configurations based on single and multi-pressure HRSG are compared, focusing on efficiency, specific CO2 emissions and unit cost of electricity (COE).
