Wind effects on stretched membrane heliostat were investigated in a boundary layer wind tunnel. The membrane response was measured at stow and representative operational conditions. It was found that both at the stow and operational conditions the mean response was much higher than the rms response. At stow conditions the largest response occurred near the leading edge of the membrane, while the rms response was the largest at the membrane centerpoint. For the operational conditions, the largest mean and rms responses were found at the membrane centerpoint. The membrane response was significantly reduced by the membrane focusing induced through the internal underpressure.

The traditional atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel model test practice employs wind fields, the flow characteristics of which are in accordance with the empirical formulae of the atmospheric turbulence presented in Codes of Practice and monographs. However, the empirical formulae presented in Codes of Practice and monographs cannot truthfully reflect the high variations of the realistic atmospheric turbulence which sometimes aggravates wind effects on structures. Based on model tests conducted in a multiple-fan actively controlled wind tunnel, it is found that most wind effects on large cooling towers change monotonically with the increase in free-stream turbulence, and the model test results are more unfavorable for a flow field of low turbulence intensity than for a flow field of high turbulence intensity with respect to the measured coherences. Thus, a new atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel simulation methodology for wind effects on circular cylindrical structures is proposed to overcome the deficiency of the traditional atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel model tests. The new simulation methodology includes the simulation of two realistic atmospheric boundary layer flow fields with the highest and the lowest turbulence intensities in the wind tunnel and the envelopment of model test results obtained in the two flow fields (e.g. the mean and fluctuating wind pressure distributions, the power spectral density, the coherence function, and the correlation coefficient). The superiority of the new atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel simulation methodology over the traditional model test practice is demonstrated by comparing the model test results with the full-scale measurement data.

The viscous boundary layer on a finite flat plate in a stream which reverses its direction once (at t = 0) is analysed using an improved version of the approximate method described earlier (Pedley 1975). Long before reversal (t < −t1), the flow at a point on the plate will be quasi-steady; long after reversal (t > t2), the flow will again be quasi-steady, but with the leading edge at the other end of the plate. In between (−t1 < t < t2) the flow is governed approximately by the diffusion equation, and we choose a simple solution of that equation which ensures that the displacement thickness of the boundary layer remains constant at t = −t1. The results of the theory, in the form of the wall shear rate at a point as a function of time, are given both for a uniformly decelerating stream, and for a sinusoidally oscillating stream which reverses its direction twice every cycle. The theory is further modified to cover streams which do not reverse, but for which the quasi-steady solution breaks down because the velocity becomes very small. The analysis is also applied to predict the wall shear rate at the entrance to a straight pipe when the core velocity varies with time as in a dog's aorta. The results show positive and negative peak values of shear very much larger than the mean. They suggest that, if wall shear is implicated in the generation of atherosclerosis because it alters the permeability of the wall to large molecules, then an appropriate index of wall shear at a point is more likely to be the r.m.s. value than the mean.

Drag reduction on airfoils using arrays of micro-actuators is one application of so-called Aero-MEMS. These microactuators interact with TS instabilities (Tollmien-Schlichting waves) inside a transitional boundary layer by superimposing artificially generated counterwaves in order to delay the transition process. These actuators need to exhibit a relatively large stroke at relatively high operational frequencies when operated at high Mach numbers. For this purpose, a novel micromachined mechanical amplification unit for increasing the stroke of piezoelectric microactuators up to high frequencies is proposed. The mechanical lever is provided by a sliced nickel titanium membrane. In this work, the actuator is explained in detail and wind tunnel experiments are carried out to investigate the effect of this mechanically amplified piezoelectric microactuator on thin transitional boundary layers. The experiments have been carried out in the transonic wind tunnel facility of the Berlin University of Technology on an unswept test wing with an NACA 0004 leading edge. The effectiveness of the actuator for flow control applications is determined in an open-loop setup consisting of one actuator having a relevant spanwise extension and a microstructured hot film sensor array located downstream. The aerodynamic results at Mach 0.33 are presented and discussed. It is shown that the actuator influences TS wave specific frequencies between 2.5 kHz and 7.4 kHz. The actuator amplitude is large enough to influence a transitional boundary layer significantly without bypassing the natural transition process which makes this type of micromachined actuator a candidate for high speed TS-control.

The general characteristics of aerodynamic vibrations of a solar wing system were investigated through wind tunnel tests using an aeroelastic model under four oncoming flows. In total, 12 solar panels were suspended by cables and orientated horizontally. Distances between panels were set constant. Tests showed that the fluctuating displacement increases proportionally to the square of the mean wind speed for all wind directions in boundary-layer flows. Larger fluctuating displacements were found for boundary-layer flows with larger power-law indices. Under low-turbulence flow, the fluctuating displacement increased proportionally to the square of the mean wind speed for wind directions between 0° and 30°, but an instability vibration was observed at high mean wind speed for wind directions larger than 40°. And when the wind direction was larger than 60°, a limited vibration was observed at low mean wind speed and the instability vibration was also observed at high mean wind speed. Fluctuating displacements under grid-generated flow showed a similar trend to that of the boundary-layer flows, although the values became much smaller.

Investigations by one of the authors in connection with the design of a fan for a blower type of wind tunnel showed that regular and repeatable dust patterns occurred on the blades of a one-quarter scale model fan of 18 inches diameter. Dust was deposited on the fan blades along the leading-edge and on the suction surface over an area thought to be the turbulent region of the boundary layer. The introduction of isolated protuberances on the dust free area of a blade gave rise to turbulence wedges in which dust was also deposited and this was interpreted as confirmation of the coincidence of the dust deposits with regions of turbulent boundary-layer flow. These deposits showed the existence of a considerable extent of laminar flow on the suction surface of each blade close to the root, a region where high lift coefficients would be expected with associated adverse pressure gradients. Two-dimensional wind tunnel experiments were made to confirm the interpretation of the observed dust patterns by comparison with the smoke filament and volatile liquid methods of flow visualisation and these are reported in Reference 2.

Adding vertical ribs is recognized as a useful practice for reducing wind effects on cooling towers. However, ribs are rarely used on cooling towers in China since Chinese Codes are insufficient to support the design of rough-walled cooling towers, and an “understanding” hampers the use of ribs, which thinks that increased surface roughness has limited effects on the maximum internal forces that control the structural design. To this end, wind tunnel model tests in both uniform flow field with negligible free-stream turbulence and atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) turbulent flow field are carried out in this article to meticulously study and quantify the surface roughness effects on both static and dynamic wind loads for the purpose of improving Chinese Codes first. Subsequently, a further step is taken to obtain wind effects on a full-scale large cooling tower at a high Re, which are employed to validate the results obtained in the wind tunnel. Finally, the veracity of the model test results is discussed by investigating the Reynolds number (Re) effects on them. It has been proved that the model test results for atmospheric boundary layer flow field are all obtained in the range of Re-independence and the conclusions drawn from model tests and full-scale measurements basically agree, so most model test results presented in this article can be directly applied to the full-scale condition without corrections.

The flow above the free end of a surface-mounted finite-height circular cylinder was studied in a low-speed wind tunnel using particle image velocimetry (PIV). The cylinder was mounted vertically in the wind tunnel, normal to a ground plane. The approaching flow was in the x-direction and the cylinder axis was aligned in the z-direction. Velocity measurements were made above the free-end surface in several vertical (x-z) planes and several horizontal (x-y) planes, for finite circular cylinders of aspect ratios AR = 9, 7, 5 and 3, at a Reynolds number of Re = 4.2×104. The relative thickness of the boundary layer on the ground plane was δ/D = 1.7. In the vertical symmetry plane, the mean velocity measurements show the prominent separation from the circumferential leading edge, the mean recirculation zone above the free-end surface, the arch vortex inside the recirculation zone, and reattachment of the flow onto the free-end surface. Experimental evidence is found for a leading-edge separation bubble, a flow structure which has been reported in some numerical simulations in the literature. As AR decreases, the reattachment point and the centre of the arch vortex move downstream, the recirculation zone becomes thicker, and the centre of the arch vortex moves higher above the free end. Away from the symmetry plane, the recirculation zone becomes thinner, the arch vortex centre moves upstream and closer to the free-end surface, and the reattachment point moves upstream. In the horizontal planes, measurements made very close to the surface can approximate the mean surface streamline topology, revealing the pair of foci representing the termination points of the arch vortex, the prominent curved reattachment line, reverse flow beneath the mean recirculation zone, and the reattachment and separation saddle points on the free-end centerline.

Junction flow caused by the aerodynamic interaction between a wind-tunnel model and the support structure can largely influence the flowfield and hence the experimental results. This paper discusses a combined numerical and experimental study which was carried out to mitigate the model–support interference in a wind-tunnel test setup for the study of fuselage boundary-layer ingestion. The setup featured an axisymmetric fuselage mounted through a support beam, covered by a wing-shaped fairing. The junction flow appearing at the fuselage–fairing connection produced undesired flow distortions at the fuselage aft section, due to the formation of an horseshoe vortex structure at the fairing leading edge. Numerical and experimental analysis were performed with the aim of reducing the distortion intensity by improving the fairing design. Results show that modifying the leading-edge shape of the fairing effectively decreased the flowfield distortions. Moreover, the addition of a dummy fairing diametrically opposed to the first one was found to be beneficial due to the enhancement of the configuration symmetry.

The effects of smart-material-based active surface perturbation (i.e. piezo-ceramic actuators) on wall shear stress and noise metric have been investigated by simulations and wind tunnel experiments. A periodic vibration through the application of piezo-ceramic actuators is imposed on the surface of a plate, and the vibration position is located on the upper part of the leading edge of the plate. Both the control results from simulations and experiments are close to each other, when the control parameters are the same. The simulations and wind tunnel experiments show that downstream skin-friction drag and noise metric can be reduced with the active control, and the reductions strongly depend on control parameters. Comparing with the near wall flow structures, the turbulent kinetic energy and characteristic turbulence length scale in the turbulent boundary layer can be controlled with the piezo-ceramic actuator.

By making simple assumptions, an analytical theory is deduced for the mean velocity behind a two-dimensional obstacle (of heighth) placed on a rigid plane over which flows a turbulent boundary layer (of thickness δ). It is assumed thath[Gt ] δ, and that the wake can be divided into three regions. The velocity deficit −uis greatest in the two regions in which the change in shear stress is important, a wall region (W) close to the wall and a mixing region (M) spreading from the top of the obstacle. Above these is the external region (E) in which the velocity field is an inviscid perturbation on the incident boundary-layer velocity, which is taken to have a power-law profileU(y) =U∞(y−y1)n/δn, wheren[Gt ] 1. In (M), assuming that an eddy viscosity (=KhU(h)) can be defined for the perturbed flow in terms of the incident boundary-layer flow and that the velocity is self-preserving, it is found thatu(x,y) has the form$\frac{u}{U(h)} = \frac{ C }{Kh^2U^2(h)} \frac{f(n)}{x/h},\;\;\;\; {\rm where}\;\;\;\; \eta = (y/h)/[Kx/h]^{1/(n+2)}$, and the constant which defines the strength of the wake is$C = \int^\infty_0 y^U(y)(u-u_E)dy$, whereu=uE(x, y) asy→ 0 in region (E).In region (W),u(y) is proportional to Iny.By considering a large control surface enclosing the obstacle it is shown that the constant of the wake flow is not simply related to the drag of the obstacle, but is equal to the sum of the couple on the obstacle and an integral of the pressure field on the surface near the body.New wind-tunnel measurements of mean and turbulent velocities and Reynolds stresses in the wake behind a two-dimensional rectangular block on a roughened surface are presented. The turbulent boundary layer is artificially developed by well-established methods (Counihan 1969) in such a way that δ = 8h. These measurements are compared with the theory, with other wind-tunnel measurements and also with full-scale measurements of the wind behind windbreaks.It is found that the theory describes the distribution of mean velocity reasonably well, in particular the (x/h)−1decay law is well confirmed. The theory gives the correct self-preserving form for the distribution of Reynolds stress and the maximum increase of the mean-square turbulent velocity is found to decay downstream approximately as$ (\frac{x}{h})^{- \frac{3}{2}} $in accordance with the theory. The theory also suggests that the velocity deficit is affected by the roughness of the terrain (as measured by the roughness lengthy0) in proportion to In (h/y0), and there seems to be some experimental support for this hypothesis.
